Place: K2
Time: 7:00pm
When: Tonight
Doors Open: 6:00pm
At Stake: Best team in the state

Zag newcomers Courtney Vandersloot, Tiffanie Shives and Janelle Bekkering join veterans Michelle Elliott, Jami Bjorklund, Heather Bowman, Vivian Frieson and Rachel Kane. Huskies new coach Tia Jackson brings her Pac-10 squad into K2. Will the Zags make her pay for Romar's chicken act? Methinks so.

This should be a great game. If you can, go see it.

Nice going for the women's team - I just checked the stats and there were a few impressive performances - Vandersloot with 10 assists in 26 mins of play! Bekkering with 20 pts in 26 mins! Jami Bjorklund with a double-double (17-10)!

Whew! The women's team is going to be good this year!

Great job!!

Nice start. Congrats to all the players and coaches.

I suppose the Huskies will now drop the Zag Women from their schedule.

Actually a few stars.

Janelle Bekkering, wow, first D1 game and she pulls an Austin Daye imitation. Courtney and Tiffanie will both be great. Tiff had an off shooting night but made some sweet passes. Courtney was in her first D1 game. I thought Bowman, Bjorklund and Elliott were warriors. If Frieson hadn't broke a finger, she would've done real well; she has made a big improvement. Vivian will miss a few more games. It was domination by the Zags. This is Graves' best team yet.

It was the perfect beginning to the new season for the Gonzaga University womenís basketball team. Facing the University of Washington in Spokane for the first time since the 1997-1998 campaign, the Bulldogs earned their first victory in 18 tries over the Huskies with an impressive 91-72 win. It was also a phenomenal collegiate debut for redshirt freshman Janelle Bekkering as she posted a career-high 20 points, including 16 in the first half.

With the win the Bulldogs improved to 1-0 on the season and are now 6-0 in home openers, while the Huskies dropped to 0-2 overall.

Gonzaga and Washington battled close for the first 10 minutes of the opening half, but the Bulldogs picked up the pace and quickly ran away from the Huskies. Leading 20-18 at the 11:38 mark, the Zags went on a 14-4 run to open the game up at 34-22 with a little over eight minutes remaining in the stanza. Senior Michelle Elliott ignited the run with two three-pointers and a layup, while junior Jami Bjorklund muscled two layups of her own.

The Bulldogs continued to forge ahead, building a 24-point lead twice in the final three minutes, and settling for a 55-33 advantage at half. Gonzaga built its huge lead without sophomore Heather Bowman, the 2006-07 West Coast Conference Newcomer of the Year, as she was hit with two quick fouls in the opening minutes of the game. Beside Bekkeringís 16 points, Bjorklund chipped in 13 to give the Zags the run-away lead.

Gonzaga continued to dominate in the second half, not letting its lead go under 20 until the final moments of the game. It was Bowman who was came alive in the final half to keep the Huskies at bay. The forward scored 16 points, grabbed three rebounds, made two steals and dished out one assist in helping the Zags earn the 19-point victory.

Along with Bekkering, three other players finished the game in double-figure points. Bowman added a game-high 21 points for the Zags, while Bjorklund and Elliott chipped in 17 and 13, respectively. Bjorklund notched GUís first double-double of the season as she also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds in the victory.

Freshman point guard Courtney Vandersloot also had a superb opening game for the Zags. She dished out 10 assists, didnít turn the ball over once, and added six points and four rebounds in 26 minutes of action.

The Bulldogs closed out the game shooting 46.8% (36-77) from the floor, including 23.5% (4-17) from beyond the three-point arc, and was 75.0% (15-20) at the charity stripe.

The Huskies were led by Sami Whitcomb and Michelle Augustavo who score 16 and 11 points, respectively. Spokane native freshman Katelan Redmon had six points for UW.

Gonzaga will be back in action Saturday, Nov. 17 when it welcomes the University of Nevada to the McCarthey Athletic Center. Game time is set for Noon.

Zagco watched the Boise State women put a beat down on the Husky ladies the other day, but he was REALLY impressed with the Redmon freshmen that play for the Huskies--an LC product, right??? You can tell she's very young, but she had some obvious athletic talent that made you really worry when she had the ball. She had hops all over the place. It was almost like she was using Jedi powers to levitate on those close-in jump shots. She just needs some more experience, but she has the tools to dominate.

Zagco was extremely unimpressed with new Husky coach. She was t'd up for calling one of the Bronco players a name, and was basically just a real irritant the entire game. The atmosphere on the Husky bench did not look good. A big part of that might have been the way they were behind the entire game, but a lot of it was just petty nonsense or a self-fulfilling prophesy.

Yeah, they "upgraded" from June Dougherty to Tia baby. :)

True. Redmon is good. But LC grad Heather Bowman is better, and that's the truth.

Where in the Sam Hell is Spokane getting all these Top Flight chick basketball players?!? Unreal. Is there any explanation for it? A really good youth program? Coincidence? The water? What?!?

I just wish the boys equalled the girls. Spokane would equal Seattle. Ron Adams runs an ultra successful AAU program, the Spokane Stars. Girls excel in it. There is no football or "major" sport to compete against, though v-ball and soccer are also quite strong with the girls, too. They start early. More D1 players are in the pipeline, too. Some are high-major.
