Mark Pope, a former BYU assistant and current Utah Valley head coach, will serve as the new head coach in Provo.

As mentioned several weeks ago on this board, this hire comes as no surprise. He was the leading candidate. Because of the requirement that the coach be a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, BYU's search is very narrow.
His first job, beyond getting some good players into the program, is to learn how to beat Randy Bennett and St. Mary's. There is too much of an obsession with Gonzaga, and it's led to the Cougars actually having a worse record (I believe) vs. the Gaels than they do against the Zags since they joined the WCC. -
WCC has humbled BYU basketball. it needed it imo, we'll see if Pope can adjust to itComment
