Hey Folks,

I know this is an unusual post, but, Florida State player, Phil Coferís father passed away thursday. I couldnt imagine the pain he is going through and would hate to see something like this happen to any of our student athletes. If anyone would like to help with the funeral or medical costs there is a GoFundMe set up. Lets show how compassionate and loving we are here in Zag Nation! https://www.gofundme.com/funeral-and-medical-expenses-for-michael-cofer

This was reported on the board on Thursday, but yes, an awful thing. I guess he died soon after FSU won.

CLH does not expect Phil Cofer to be available for Thursdayís S16 game vs GU, according to Jon Rothstein.

One hopes that the NCAA will let Florida State help the young man out with travel and such. If not, the GoFundMe page is the answer, but this is where schools should be allowed to jump in and help their student athletes that make them so much money.

Leonard Hamilton has my respect.

Leonard Hamilton tells me he doesn't expect Florida State to have Phil Cofer for Thursday's Sweet 16 game against Gonzaga. Hamilton: "We're going to respect Phil during this tragedy and the passing of his father. He knows where we are and we know where he is. We're here for him."

That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if he plays - probably healthiest, though not my decision to make, and I think they're doing the right thing in being available but hands off.

Don't want to be cold hearted, but it seems like a gofundme wouldn't be permissible with NCAA rules?

It might not be for the player himself, but I don't think the NCAA can do anything about the family getting help for funeral and medical expenses.

If it looks bad...they could claim it was for a tutor and permissible under the North Carolina rule.

If you read the gofundme page, it was pre-cleared by both FSU and the NCAA. Also, any and all funds in excess of medical and funeral expenses will be donated to charity.

Yes, and I was happy to see that a significant amount of contributions have been made in just two days.

Mods: My bad. Rothstein's tweet was picked up yesterday here: http://guboards.spokesmanreview.com/showthread.php?65407-OT-Florida-State-s-Phil-Cofer%92s-Father-passed
Best to just delete this post.

"Florida State men’s basketball will have to face the No. 1 seed Gonzaga Bulldogs without one of its best players. Due to his father’s recent passing, forward Phil Cofer will not be available for Thursday’s game, according to CBS Sports college basketball insider Jon Rothstein.

"Leonard Hamilton tells me he doesn’t expect Florida State to have Phil Cofer for Thursday’s Sweet 16 game against Gonzaga. Hamilton: “We’re going to respect Phil during this tragedy and the passing of his father. He knows where we are and we know where he is. We’re here for him.”

As the article goes on to say, "Cofer’s absence is hardly unexpected. News broke on March 21 that his father Mike Cofer had passed away after being sick for a period of time."

https://www.thedailynole.com/2019/03/26/phil-cofer-not-expected-to-play-vs-gonzaga/

"Cofer’s absence means the Seminoles will need to keep relying on their reserves and young players to fill his role. The fifth-year senior averaged 7.4 points and 3.5 rebounds per game during the regular season, despite being hampered by a nagging foot injury. Cofer did not play in the first two NCAA Tournament games against Vermont and Murray State."

Some more context as to what the junior Cofer is going through:

It’s a tough read.
