WCC Kickoff is Good
- Gonzaga started the West Coast Conference season with a pair of wins in a three-game set at BYU. In series originally scheduled for Spokane, but moved due to late winter weather, Gonzaga still found a way to win the bookends by similar scores of 4-2.
- Gonzaga closer Alek Jacob had an outstanding week out of the bullpen, pitching in all three of Gonzaga's wins as the Zags went 3-1 on the road. He collected two saves and one win, pitching 8.0 total innings, allowing zero earned runs (1 unearned) and just three hits, while striking out 10.
- Ernie Yake hit .474 (9-for-19) with six extra-base hits (5 2B, 1 3B) to help Gonzaga go 3-1 in four road games. On Thursday in the WCC opener at BYU, Yake tied the score in the fifth with an RBI, then knocked home a pair of runs with a double in the 11th inning to break a two-all tie and propel GU to the win.
- Yake led off three of the four games this week with an extra-base hit...

MALIBU, Calif. — Gonzaga baseball ran into a strong pitching performance on the mound from Pepperdine in a 4-2 loss on Friday afternoon in Malibu, Calif.

The Zags (8-10, 2-2) managed just six hits, its first game with less than seven in the last 11 times on the field, and were able to score just two single runs in the first and sixth innings. GU held Pepperdine (11-7, 3-1) to just four hits in the game, but they came in timely spots on the way to just enough offense with four runs.

GU's Mason Wells was solid on the mound all day for the Zags, pitching his first career complete game in the loss. He threw 8.0 innings, allowing just four earned runs on four hits with four walks and one strikeout.

"We didn't do enough to win today against a good team," head coach Mark Machtolf said. "We gave them too many free bases, and they capitalized on it. We swung the bats better offensively than the box score shows, but just couldn't get the big knock today."

On offense, Troy Johnston and Ernie Yake each had two hits, including Yake's leadoff triple which helped give GU a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly by Guthrie Morrison. The leadoff extra-base hit by Yake was his fourth in the last five games.

The Waves got two in the third to take the lead, and then scored two more in the fourth before Gonzaga was able to respond.

Johnston knocked home Morrison in the sixth to bring the Zags to within two at 4-2, but GU managed just two hits in the final three innings and couldn't overcome the deficit.

Gonzaga will be back on the field at Pepperdine on Saturday, March 23 at 1 p.m. in Malibu, Calif.. Links to live coverage will be available at GoZags.com.

MALIBU, Calif. — Gonzaga baseball suffered its second consecutive two-run loss on the road at Pepperdine, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon in Malibu, Calif.

Despite getting 5.0 innings of one-run relief from right-hander Michael Spellacy, Gonzaga (8-11, 2-3) couldn't come up with the big hit to put pressure on the Pepperdine (12-7, 4-1) pitching. Spellacy allowed just four hits and one run with three strikeouts in 5.0 innings after entering for starter Nick Trogrlic-Iverson in the fourth.

GU managed just five hits by five different players in the game, with Nick Nyquist collecting one hit and scoring the lone run on an RBI single by Guthrie Morrison in the second inning.

"It was not our best effort all around today, and we'll tip our cap as Pepperdine outplayed us in this one," head coach Mark Machtolf said. "We are looking forward to the opportunity to dig one out tomorrow."

Pepperdine got on the board first before GU momentarily tied it in the top of the second. But, the Waves scored again in the bottom of the second and never relinquished the lead.

The Zags and Waves will play the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m. Links to live coverage are available on GoZags.com.

Baseball Rallies for 3-2 win at Pepperdine

GU scored two in the 9th, and RHP Jacob went 8.0 innings of relief

MALIBU, Calif. — Gonzaga's Alek Jacob pitched 8.0 innings of shutout relief and kept the Zags in the game long enough for the offense to come through in the ninth inning of a 3-2 win over Pepperdine on Sunday in Malibu, Calif.

Jacob entered for starter Justin Blatner in the second inning with GU (9-11, 3-3) down 2-0 to the Waves (12-8, 4-2). He was lights out the rest of the way, and got the win after Troy Johnston knocked home two runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. On the day, Jacob allowed just two hits and struck out six while walking two.

"It was a really gutsy performance to dig out a crucial win on the road, and you can't say enough about how about Alek Jacob. It was another huge performance from him, and what a clutch hit from Troy Johnston.," head coach Mark Machtolf said. "We are ready to get back home and play at Patterson."

Gonzaga's offense came up with eight hits in the game, led by Johnston's two and two from Daniel Fredrickson.

Down 2-1 entering the final frame, Brett Harris started with a single and then Fredrickson attempted a sacrifice, but a perfectly placed bunt netted him a single. With two runners on, Jack Machtolf bunted the runners to second and third, and then Ernie Yake was intentionally walked to load the bases. After a fielder's choice forced a runner out at home, Johnston came up with the heroics on a single to left that brought home both Fredrickson and Yake.

Jacob came back out for his final inning of work and faced just three batters. He walked one, but catcher Austin Pinorini cut down the runner trying to steal second.

The win helped Gonzaga avoid the sweep in the series after dropping a pair of two-run games on Friday and Saturday.

GU returns to Spokane for its home opener against Washington on Tuesday, March 26, at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field. Links to live scoring are available at GoZags.com.
