Series Switch
- The Gonzaga-BYU series being played in Provo, Utah, this year is a switch from the original schedule that was released at the beginning of the season. The teams swapped the 2019 and 2020 series locations due to late winter weather in Spokane.

Pac-12 Foes Aplenty
- In the second of 11 games this season against Pac-12 opponents, Gonzaga took a 5-3 win at Utah on Tuesday. The Zags got 4.1 innings from lefty starter Matthew Henckel (2 R, 7 H) and 4.2 innings from the bullpen (combined 1 R, 6 H), and Nick Nyquist his a three-run homer with the Zags down 2-1 in the sixth to put them ahead for good.

Fast Start, Tough Finish
- Gonzaga got off to a great start in the series at No. 20/22 Texas A&M with a Friday win, but the Aggies took the final two games of the series.
- The win in game one gave GU three straight wins over ranked opponents when combined with the two the previous weekend at then-No. 23 Southern Miss.
- Casey Legumina earned the win with 5.0 innings of work and Alek Jacob worked a 3.0 inning save to help GU to a 6-4 win. Austin Pinorini was 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.
- In the second game, A&M put up 14 runs, but GU came back on Sunday and held them to just three in a 3-1 loss.
- The bright spot in the finale was Nick Trogrlic-Iverson, who worked 5.0 innings of one-run relief...

Interesting, Zags did not start their ace Casey Legumina.

1-1 thru 8. Quite a pitcher's dual.

PROVO, Utah — Gonzaga baseball came up with two runs in the 11th inning to beat BYU 4-2 in the teams' West Coast Conference opener on Thursday in Provo, Utah.

Gonzaga couldn't hold a one-run lead in the ninth, but Ernie Yake came through with a huge two-run double in the 11th to propel Gonzaga to the win.

"We got outstanding pitching tonight from Mason Wells, Nick Trogrlic-Iverson and Alek Jacob," head coach Mark Machtolf said. "The offense did a great job battling and extending at-bats against Jordan Wood tonight. We came up with some big timely hits when we needed to answer and get the win."

Freshman left-hander Wells got his first career start and pitched like a veteran, holding BYU to just one run on five hits thru 5.1 innings of work. He struck out four and walked just one, exiting with the game tied at 1-1. Trogrlic-Iverson went the next 2.2 innings of scoreless relief and Jacob earned the win after pitching the final 3.1 innings.

The Zags answered BYU's fourth-inning run with their own in the fifth when Yake brought home Nyquist with a groundout to tie the score at 1-1.

After 2.2 scoreless innings in the mound for Trogrlic-Iverson, who came on for Wells in the 6th, GU finally got back on the board in the ninth. Brett Harris started the inning with a single and moved to second on a sac bunt, and then Nyquist again put the Zags in position to win with an RBI single up the middle. That came two days after Nyquist hit a three-run homer to help beat Utah on Tuesday.

Closer Alek Jacob came on in the ninth to shut down and had two outs, but a dropped popup allowed the tying run to score.

The teams were scoreless in the 10th, and then came Yake's big hit in the 11th to put GU ahead for good.

Gonzaga and BYU will play the second of a three-game series on Friday at 5 p.m. PT/6 p.m. MT. Links to live coverage will be available at GoZags.com.

PROVO, Utah Gonzaga baseball jumped out to a 3-1 lead, but couldn't hold it in a 7-4 loss at BYU on Friday night in Provo, Utah.

A bases loaded double by BYU's Brock Hale broke a 3-3 tie and put the Cougars (13-4, 1-1) in front for good. Gonzaga (7-9 1-1) got three hits from Ernie Yake, but couldn't capitalize on base runners in the eighth and ninth.

"All around, we did not play our best game tonight," head coach Mark Machtolf said. "We had too many mistakes that led to opportunities and runs for BYU. We are looking forward to a good battle tomorrow to secure a series on the road."

In addition to Yake, Troy Johnston had two hits and Austin Pinorini, Nick Nyquist and Jack Krauel each knocked home a run.

On the mound, Justin Blatner went 4.2 innings, allowing six runs on just three hits while striking out five and walking three. Nick Trogrlic-Iverson entered for two batters, the first of which was the bases loaded double by Hale. Taylor Davis went the final 3.1 innings and gave up just one run on three hits.

Yake opened the game with a double down the left field line and later scored on a sac fly off the bat of Pinorini to make it 1-0. After a BYU solo homer in the bottom of the first to make it 1-1, GU quickly answered with two in the second. Troy Johnston opened the frame with a triple and Nyquist followed with a double to score him. After Nyquist moved to third on a groundout, Krauel brought him home with a sac fly to make it 3-1.

BYU was able to put up runs in each of the next four innings, and GU found itself down 7-3 heading to the seventh inning.

Gonzaga got one more run in the eighth when Sullivan scored on an error by the third baseman off the bat of Nyquist.

Gonzaga and BYU will play the series finale on Saturday at 12 p.m. PT/1 p.m. MT. Links to live coverage will be available at GoZags.com.

PROVO, Utah — Gonzaga baseball got 3.2 inning s of shutout relief from closer Alek Jacob to beat BYU 4-2 and win the road series on Saturday afternoon in Provo, Utah.

Jacob, who moved to the closer role three weeks ago, entered with the bases loaded, one out in the sixth inning and GU leading 3-2. He got out of that jam with a popup and a strikeout and then allowed just one hit over the next three innings to completely slam the door for his fifth save of the season.

"We are really proud of this group this week," head coach Mark Machtolf said. "We had to battle through injuries and had numerous guys step up and contribute in major ways. Mac Lardner gave us a good start today, and Alek Jacob was outstanding again on the back end to close out a big series win on the road."

Gonzaga lefty Mac Lardner got his first win of the season with a solid outing, going 5.0 innings and allowing just two runs on four hits with three strikeouts.

On offense it was more Ernie Yake for GU, as the shortstop went 2-for-4 with two doubles, a walk and a run scored. For the series, Yake went 6-for-14 with five doubles, three RBI and two runs scored.

Ryan Sullivan knocked in three runs and Nick Nyquist had two hits and an RBI.

Gonzaga struck first with three runs in the third inning after putting the leadoff man on for the third straight time. Sullivan then came to the plate and drove in two with a single, followed two batters later by an RBI single from Nyquist.

BYU got one in the bottom of the third, and then threatened to have a big inning in the sixth before Jacob entered to shut the Cougars down.

The Zags added one more in the seventh inning with another RBI from Sullivan, this time on a sac fly that brought home Guthrie Morrison.

Gonzaga will be back on the road in WCC play with a three-game series at Pepperdine beginning Friday, March 22, Malibu. Links to live coverage will be available at GoZags.com.
