Zags are facing the Gaels one more time. Do the Zags beat them a third time? Or do the Gaels play slow ball and try to close the 14 point gap of the last game?

What are you expecting to see? Hoping to see? Thoughts? Predictions?

Have at it boys and girls!

I think SMC figured out that if they play real slow they can have a punchers chance at staying in the game. Think this one will be a bit of a grinder.

I normally wouldn't predict a large spread against the Gaels under most circumstances but the Zags were up by 50 and 20 in their two games against them. I don't think this one is close

Randy Bennett & Co will attempt to slowwwwwwww it down. Limit possessions. Run out the shot clock. Make us grind, defend for long stretches, and significantly decrease the tempo.

I liked how we responded in the 2nd half at Moraga, but was upset we allowed them to slow the tempo so much. We literally played how SMC wanted to play. It was one of the more disappointing game plan's of the WCC season. Good thing Clarke & Rui just decided to take over, but we can't always count on that vs better, slower, grind teams like Virginia, K-State, Virginia Tech, & Michigan (all in the bottom 1% of possessions and tempo).

How will we respond tonight?

Well, first I'd like to see us press or 3/4 press for 80% of the game. We pressed them a handful of times in 2nd half @SMC....and it worked! Beautifully. Faster shots by Ford or Fitts, sped up the game a bit, created a TO with Geno for a transition dunk by Rui, got us going. Didn't see it in 1st half or rest of game though.

Lead the fastbreak with our bigs, get stops, and trap more often.

We have the personel to take more chances to play at OUR speed, esp this year, so let's do it. We may need to come NCAA Tourney time.

What is it with mods predicting such close scores in this tournament? Renozag predicted that we would beat Pepperdine by 13 points; we were up by 44 until we put in the deep bench and took our foot off the gas. Now you’re predicting we will only beat St. Mary’s by nine? I don’t get it.

91-69 us

Because last game we only scored 69 pts in our last meeting while still shooting 53% FG.

We only attempted 52 shots vs SMC, over 10 less than our average per game.

St Mary's ranks 344 of 353 in fewest possessions per game. They burn clock, they grind, they play an incredibly slow tempo (3rd slowest in college hoops).

That is why.

Also, we rarely press them for some reason. Only when Geno or Snacks forced TO's did we get out and run for transition buckets in Morage. They made us play at their pace and we simply relied on our athletic advantage. As mentioned in an earlier post, it wasn't the best game we have played since we rarely dictated tempo. We let Rui and Clarke just out leap and dunk them. It was the 2nd most disappointing game for me this season. Love the fact we pulled out a tough win vs a rival on their home floor, yet we played THEIR game/pace/tempo. It was a moral victory for SMC in some ways, as they essentially controlled the pace, but we pulled away.

Makes me wonder how we'll handle the Virginia's, KState's, Michigan's of the World.

St Mary's knows they must keep us under 50 FG attempts and limited possessions to win the game. Otherwise, no chance.

Will we grind with them? And just hope Clarke and Rui play above the rim again? Or will we press, trap, push the tempo, play OUR game as we did in Spokane?

We shall see, but the low scoring, close game predictions are spot on given last game's result and pace of play. We can also expect a spirited, if not desperate effort from them as well

AT Moraga we won 69-55...

This game will be much the same. NO way will they run with us. Our only hope for a higher scoring game is through quick points on live action turnovers.

SMC is vying for their tournament lives, they will be focused. RB (as much as I hate him) is a good coach.

None of what you posted has anything to do with the question that I posed. I didn't ask about his score prediction, I asked about his score prediction margin; big difference. He's predicting that we beat SMC by only 9 points and last night Reno predicated that we beat Pepperdine by 13. Sure, we might beat SMC by only 9, but there's zero empirical evidence that that will happen. Besides why is our last vs them the predictor for our game tonight and not the 50 point beat down? I would say that the 14 point win was the outlier, given our conference victory margin.

I know this sounds like I am nitpicking, but despite last night's blow out of Pepperdine, GU allowed them to score 74 points, shoot 45% from the floor, and 38% from three ball land (9/24). And yes, I know a good hunk of that happened once the game got totally out of hand and Few was forced to put the bench in. But still, I'd really like to see the Zags end the WCC tourney with a top 20 adjusted defensive efficiency at kenpom.com.

Sean F. summed it up pretty much: SMC has no chance, Gonzaga is just that good. It could see it being a lot closer than many of us think, but this Gonzaga team has beaten every WCC team by double digits. While the Gaels gave the Zags a good run for their money in Moraga, they still won by a comfortable 14. The Gaels will be facing pretty much a Kennel crowd tonight. They got beat by 48 at the Kennel, but that was kind of a perfect storm of events. The Zags are likely going to win by double digits. I suspect in the 20's. But they need to do a better job of containing Jordan Ford than last game. After completely shutting him down in the Kennel, the Zags kind of allowed him to really get going in Moraga.

I also hope that the announcers will shut up and stick with the game. I don't care if GU has them up by 22. And PLEASE, no shot of Joey Brackets in the right hand corner of the screen, in his bunker, chatting away while the game is going on.

I also hope the announcers will stop the "Are the Zags tested enough" narrative. 3 of the 6 NCAA tourney games that GU played in 2017 were nailbiters. The 2 games last year went down to the wire. The key to winning close games is to be able to get that critical stop or two when you need it, and to have a clutch, go to man who can nail shots against tough defenses. GU has that in Rui, Clarke, and Snacks. As for the ability to make a tough stop? See the Duke win. I don't know. I just think the whole thing is overblown. The Zags have the final 4 monkey off their back. They have been to 4 straight sweet 16's or better in the past 4 years. No other team has done that. I don't see this team as a team that will have a ton of pressure on it. I am on record as saying that I think this is the least likely GU team to bomb out the first weekend. There is just too much talent.

I'm okay with Jordan Ford getting his circus shots. He's a good player. I don't think SMC can win if only Jordan Ford is scoring. Play good solid DEFENSE against him, switch on the ball screen and rim protect the best you can. And be okay if he makes his 20 points. If we can shut down Fitts and Kuhse, they have no shot. But if we allow Ford and Fitts to get rolling along with Ford.. that brings the game closer.

Incredibly hard to win a game after losing to an opponent twice already. It will be close for a least the first half, but GU will pull away.

Bennett needs 2 more time outs to stop the bleeding, but the rules won't give him extras.

I expect St Mary's to slow the game down, but in the end even that is not enough to help them win. The Zags will be patient, and their exquisite passing will blow them away. St Mary's defense will not be able to keep up with the speed and accuracy of Zag passes. St Mary's may try to zone us. They'll try anything. I hope they do zone us because we haven't seen a zone for a long time.
