Sullivan Continues to Mash
- Newcomer Ryan Sullivan hit three more home runs in four games at CSUN and is now leading the Zags with a .375 batting average. He's got four homers, seven RBI and 14 runs scored in eight starts.
- He hit .389 with a 1.000 slugging percentage at CSUN in four games, totaling three homers, six RBI and nine runs scored.

Newcomers Stepping Up
- Along with Sullivan's big weekend at CSUN, Gonzaga newcomers Guthrie Morrison and Josh Bristyan also stepped up. Sullivan joined the Zags from Iowa Western CC, while Morrison came from Edmonds [Wash.] CC and Bristyan from Paradise Valley [Ariz.] CC.
- At CSUN, Morrison hit .375 with six hits in four games, knocking in three and scoring three times.
- For the series at CSUN, Bristyan hit .316 with six hits, including four doubles, two RBI and two runs.

Rotation Changes
- After going with the rotation of Legumina-Jacob-Lardner as he had the first three games of each weekend, Gonzaga head coach Mark Machtolf is moving Nick Trogrlic-Iverson into the rotation and Alek Jacob to the back end of the bullpen. Jacob did close the end of a restarted game at CSUN for his first win of the year, just before he started a game that immediately followed.
- Casey Legumina will hold down the Friday role, while Justin Blatner will move into the Sunday role after a pair of solid starts to the season.

Lights Out Legumina
- Casey Legumina, who returned to GU after being drafted in the 35th round of the MLB Draft last summer, is torching hitters with 17 strikeouts in 12.0 innings pitched across two starts.
- He's allowed hitters to bat just .156 against him and has a 1.00 WHIP and 1.50 ERA on the season so far.

2019 Is Underway
- The Zags had a tough weekend at CSUN, going 1-3 for the second straight week. GU took the opening game in a two-day marathon that featured a stoppage due to darkness, a restart the next morning, and 13 total innings.
- Gonzaga went 1-3 at the Collegiate Baseball Classic in Surprise, Arizona, to open the season. The Zags fell to Minnesota on Friday, No. 5/8 Oregon State on Saturday and New Mexico on Sunday, but defeated Minnesota on Monday.
- LHP Justin Blatner went 6.0 innings with 11 strikeouts in a career-best performance, allowing just two unearned runs on one hit with one walk.
- Newcomer Ryan Sullivan was 5-for-14 (.357) on the week, scoring five times and hitting one home run. INF Ernie Yake also had five hits and knocked in four runs in four games.

Bright Spots in Surprise
- Along with Ryan Sullivan's five-hit opening week, newcomer Brett Harris started the final two games and reached four times with two hits, a walk and a HBP. He also drove in two runs and scored twice.
- Troy Johnston returned after missing most of last season with a hand injury to collect four hits with a team-high three doubles. He also had three RBI and reached twice via walk to collect a .353 on-base percentage.
- In the bullpen, Emory transfer Billy Dimlow threw 2.0 innings of shutout relief, allowing just one hit and striking out three.
- Left-handed Trent Schulte also returned after a late-season hand injury last year to throw 1.2 innings of shutout relief, allowing just one hit and striking out two...

Baseball Sweeps No. 23 Southern Miss in Doubleheader

Alek Jacob earned the save in both games

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Gonzaga's Alek Jacob earned the save in both ends of a doubleheader sweep at Southern Mississippi on Saturday in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

The doubleheader was the result of a rainout Friday, and the Zags battled from out front all day long. GU grabbed the lead in each game in the first or second inning and was able to stay tied or in the lead all the way through.

"It was an all-around good day for the team," head coach Mark Machtolf said. "This is a tough environment to come in and sweep a doubleheader from a really good team. We had a lot of good individual performances today, but most importantly, it was a great team effort in all facets."

Game 1 – Gonzaga 4, Southern Miss 2
Gonzaga scored two in the first inning and then held on to a late lead on the way to a 4-2 win in the first game of the doubleheader. DH Mason Marenco got his first-career start for the Zags and went 4-for-4 with a run scored to lead the offense.

Right-hander Casey Legumina was fantastic on the mound, going 7.0 innings and allowing just two runs on three hits with seven strikeouts and a pair of walks. Newly minted closer Alek Jacob got his first save of the year, working 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out four.

Along with Marenco's four hits, Guthrie Morrison, Austin Pinorini and Ryan Sullivan had two hits apiece.

Sullivan collected an RBI single and Troy Johnston brought home another in a two-run first for Gonzaga. Legumina cruised through the first five innings unscathed before USM got to him in the bottom of the sixth with two runs.

GU added on in the top of the sixth, but Southern Miss pulled within one at 3-2. The Zags answered with another in the eighth to make it 4-2 and set up the cushion for Jacob to close it out.

Game 2 – Gonzaga 10, Southern Miss 8
Gonzaga pounded out four runs in the 10th inning to take the night cap of the doubleheader 10-6.

GU got those four runs on just two hits, manufacturing the inning out of free passes and timely hitting. Sullivan, Johnston, Bristyan and Pinorini each had RBIs in the inning.

Guthrie Morrison was the star on offense, going 4-for-5 with three runs scored. Troy Johnston collected two hits and Pinorini, Sullivan and Isaac Barrera each had two RBI.

On the mound, it was Jacob again who came in and shut the door for Gonzaga, collecting his second save of the day. He entered with one out in the 10th after Billy Dimlow had gone 1.2 innings and allowed just one unearned run.

Gonzaga jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning, getting an RBI double from Isaac Barrera and an RBI single from Marenco. After USM tied it a 3-3 in the fifth, the teams traded runs for the next three innings.

Gonzaga took a 5-3 lead with a solo homer by Sullivan, and after USM tied it at 5-5, GU again took a 6-5 lead with an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Pinorini. The Golden Eagles came back with a run again in the 7th to tie it at 6-6.

The bullpens then took over in the eighth and ninth, but GU got back on the board in the top of the 10th. With two outs Josh Bristyan drew a bases loaded walk to score one for Gonzaga as part of the four-run inning.

Gonzaga and Southern Miss will wrap the series on Sunday at 8 a.m . PT/10 a.m. CT at Pete Taylor Park. Check GoZags.com for links to live coverage.

Heavy rain and lightning in Hattiesburg forced cancellation
