Funny stuff on the Athletic....

Dana: But, hey, there are games worth watching this weekend: Memphis-Tennessee and North Carolina-Gonzaga. Is Gonzaga contractually obligated to play every top-10 team before New Yearís Eve?

Brian: I love it! Thank you, Mark Few. I sincerely appreciate your efforts to ensure I have lots of good basketball games to watch at all times. The Tennessee-Gonzaga game on Sunday, as I sat in a hotel near Reagan Airport, was a true treat.

Dana: Bananas. I mean, I was at the Duke game in Maui. Did I mention I was there? I forget. And this was on par, if not better.

Dana: And then thereís Gonzaga, still doing all of this sans Killian Tillie.

Brian: So youíve got Gonzaga, on the road after finals week. I like that the Zags had a week to prepare for UNC and get the Tennessee loss out of their system. Or repurpose it as a reason to be pissed off. Itís basically the last massive statement game on the schedule, I will state the obvious here: Youíd like more than zero points from Josh Perkins. I get that the nine assists against Tennessee were great, but he needs to, you know, make a shot. You donít want to be giving off that vibe of being worn out already, with the Geno Crandall injury. I donít think itís that ó Perkins played less than 30 minutes just four games ago ó but you probably arenít winning on the road without something more from the point guard offensively.

Dana: Yeah, for sure. Heís a ridiculous playmaker ó hence passing that guy John Stockton and all ó but the game requires points from your point guard these days, especially when heís as capable as Perkins is. Regardless, the Zags need all of these games ó itís not just for our viewing pleasure, alas ó because theyíre not going to get a lot of push come conference season.

That said, I know North Carolina can score with them. I donít think they can play with them.

Dana's comment re: "They're not going to get a lot of push come conference season" is flat-out wrong and buys into the cliche'd narrative of little resistance from the WCC schools.

WCC is ranked 1st of the non "Power 6" conferences.

Ahead of American Athletic, Mid American, Mountain West, A10, Missouri Valley, et al.

Impressive.

As I posted earlier, the better we are, the more hype we receive, the more punishment we get for losing in WCC.

Our conference is the best it's been in 5 yrs, at least overall.

Actually surprised that the WCC is ranked behind the Pac 12. I'm pretty sure the WCC has a winning record against the PAC 12

I'm elated that the WCC isn't going to destroy our RPI or whatever they call it now.....but Gonzaga isn't losing in conference barring another injury.

you know what we say about the RPI being flawed/gameable, etc? well, it applies on the conference level, too. i get that there aren't a whole lot of objective ways to compare different conferences, but grabbing the RPI table off of CBS' (or whoever's) webpage and then presenting it as evidence of actual conference improvement is misleading and bad -- just like the RPI itself is.

not complaining about your take, but about what you used for support and the fact that you omitted naming the metric being used -- which would have helped people to usefully evaluate the accuracy and utility of the numbers you presented.

anyway, here's what kenpom says:
1 Big 12 Conference +16.94
2 Big Ten Conference +16.64
3 Atlantic Coast Conference +15.94
4 Southeastern Conference +13.07
5 Big East Conference +12.63
6 Pac 12 Conference +9.25
7 American Athletic Conference +6.10
8 West Coast Conference +5.13

which seems about right to me. definite improvement -- and the wcc is clearly in the conversation for best non-power 6 conference, which i wouldn't have believed was ever going to happen 3-4 years ago.

Usually the wcc ends up at 13. What's nice about this year is the number of quadrant 1 teams we have.

rating conferences is all about how good are your worst teams. WCC has 3 teams over 200 adjEM. Pac12 has none. but if one looks at the top down, the average of the top 4 adjEM in the WCC is 15.27 compared to Pac12 at 14.39.
We'll have some tests in conference this year, but we won't be pushed every game.

Which is kind of bogus, IMO. WSU is awful this year. They are at #175, last in the PAC. Their BEST win is vs #273 Nicholls St. & their last game they lost to # 304 Montana St. in a semi-home game in Kennewick, giving up 95 points in the process.
