Looked like some mismatch on Gamtracker (thanks for the heads up YJ). The scoring depth will be a real benefit the whole year through.

The game was a real mismatch. We won 103-37. It was still fun to watch none the less. Saw lots of board people, ElVoce, Hondo, BobZag, OldSport. Also in attendance was Heytvelt, Brown, and Daye for part of the game. Foster, Sacre, and Gray were there the whole time.

Well it is a little slow, but compared to the alternative of waiting by the phone for her to call me after the game is over...Its great! Next monday UW!!

Yeah mismatch for sure. But good first game of the year for the family to see.

Here are a few highlights I shot.

The team looked outstanding for preseason. Gonzaga has some serious talent
and depth. Let it be known, though, that Corban was completely overmatched, they just weren't very good. But 5-6 players stood out, imho. They were--

Vivian
Courtney
Heather
Janelle
Tiffanie
Michelle

The first two really looked great, and I say that as objectively as I can. It's the first time I've seen Courtney and she is a "playa" and Vivian has made huge strides and is beginning to realize her potential.

Overall, I thought the gals looked really, really good. UW will be great test. Below is the official write-up--

The Gonzaga University women’s basketball team opened the 2007-08 season Monday night with a 103-37 win over Corban College in the only exhibition game the Zags will play this year. All 13 Bulldogs scored in the victory, including five players who finished in double-figure points for Gonzaga.

“I was excited about how we played,” said head coach Kelly Graves. “This is what an exhibition game is all about, everyone is able to get minutes and do some things. Our intensity wasn’t as high in the second half, but we still played well. Our newcomers came out strong, so did our old timers. In general, everyone came out and did a great job.”

The Bulldogs were led by sophomore Heather Bowman who posted a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds. Bowman was 5-of-9 from the field and 5-of-7 from the charity stripe, while grabbing five offensive and five defensive rebounds.

Also hitting in double digit points for the Zags was freshman Janelle Bekkering, freshman Courtney Vandersloot, sophomore Tiffanie Shives and sophomore Vivian Frieson. Bekkering closed out the game with 13 points, shooting 3-of-9 from the field and hitting 7-of-9 from the free throw line. She also added nine rebounds, two steals and one assist in the GU victory. Vandersloot added 12 points and four assists, while Shives and Frieson both chipped in 11 points apiece. Frieson also dished out a game-high seven assists and Shives contributed five assists.

Gonzaga put the game away early with a 41-10 run over the first 13 minutes of the first stanza. The Zags held Corban to only 20 points in the first half and went into the locker room with the 67-20 advantage. The Bulldogs shot a blistering 63.2% (24-38) from the field in the opening half, including 53.8% (7-13) on three-pointers, and 66.7% (12-18) at the charity stripe.

Jessica Stigleman, of Corban College, scored 10 of the Warriors 20 first half points. Stigleman was 5-of-8 from the floor as Corban finished the first stanza shooting 36.4% (8-22) from the field and 66.7% (4-6) from the free throw line.

Gonzaga opened the second half with a 10-1 run to push its lead to 77-21. Bowman scored six of the Zags 10 points during the run. The Warriors could not overcome the deficit as the Bulldogs earned the 66-point victory.

Gonzaga held the 54-32 rebounding advantage, including a commanding 27-15 advantage on the offensive glass. For the game the Zags shot 47.9% (35-73) from the floor, including 36.4% (8-22) from beyond the three-point arc, and were 67.6% (25-37) at the charity stripe.

GU opens its regular-season when it hosts in-state rival the University of Washington, who was a 2007 NCAA participant, on Monday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m.

Corban was not a bad NAIA school, but the GU Women came out ready to go. They have a lot of weapons. Should make for some excitement on Monday against those Huskies. After last nights loss to SPU, they should be fired up.

Corban college is very much like Seattle Pacific. It is a D-II school that won its conference last year and made and appearance at the National Tournament. Corban, like SPU, returns three core players from last year.

The Huskys will have a major chip on their shoulder by the time they get to Spokane as they play Kansas on Saturday...

Oh, and alot of those SPU girls are some of the local talent that the former coach did not recruit
