UW is the team to beat for him, the thing that puts us in the conversation is the talent we will have surrounding him. I can't remember exactly how, but he has a connection to UW (Brandon Roy I believe).

This is going to be a tough one...UW has had such great success putting their players into the first round of the draft these past few years...I hope he realizes his draft status won't decrease coming to GU and he could well be on another FF team in 2020...IMO

I think UW is on the rise, but not sure their first round success will be the same as it has been in the past. Plus Strawther is no a one and done type, his education is important to him and parents are super supportive of him going to school first then looking at the NBA after.

We have had success getting bigs into the NBA, while UW has had success with guards...and Strawther is a guard BUT as you stated they have a new coach, new system (Zone D) and we will have to wait and see...I have only heard of one of UW’s players being mentioned in projected draft boards and that was Thybul(?)...if memory serves the last guard we had drafted was Stepp by the Timberwolves...

As you stated, I feel much more confident in Strawther choosing GU over UW...

Yes our success has been getting bigs drafted, but NWG was drafted just two years ago and Snacks is on draft boards already. Plus Strawther fits our system better than UW's and we are a successful program. Not saying he picks up, just saying we are in a great spot for him.

They trailed the entire game, couldn't crap 50 points, and only had 10 points with 2 minutes left in the first half. I'm guessing, but I wouldn't think the crowd would be very electric in that situation.

The crowd was amazingly supportive. They cheered on the Huskies ever time they did anything right even when they were down. The Huskies were within 6 or 8 for a good chunk of the second half. Our crowd would have sat stunned in hushed hysteria if our guys played that badly.

I don’t think recruits are basing their decisions on one game. I hope he was there to see how everybody handled it. Probably shows a player more in a loss vs a blowout win.

My post was more tongue-in-cheek than anything

I agree. I feel pretty confident in what I was told about meeting with Julian, that we might have a slim lead right now. It's still early in the process, but we are in a great position.

like you said, it's still early...many of the "big" name schools tend to get involved later on if they miss out on the 5 star guys...i doubt it comes down to just the zags and marquette...

i've come to the conclusion that a longer a recruit waits to decide, the less likely they are to pick the zags...you're either a zag or you're not.

i'd say timme's recruitment is an excellent counter-example. we were in early, big boys tried but failed to break in later, announced on signing day senior year. similar story for perkins, iirc-- though he verballed in august before signing day.

sure, anything can happen... there's plenty of time left. but we've had recruitment successes that have followed both paths. we've seen nothing but positive updates from the various insiders... i don't see a point in getting down on his recruitment based on some imaginary clock in your head. but that's just me.

We have become one of the big boys. Very few kids we recruit would run to KU or UK or Duke or UNC over us now.

As soon as I said that I knew this would be the name brought up... half the battle for gonzaga seems to be getting guys on campus...agree that the conversion rate is really high when that happens. in fact, other than the unique b-will case, when was the last time the zags didn't land someone who visited? did jordan brown ever visit?

Jordan Brown never visited campus, honestly as soon as he heard rumblings Rui and Tillie were staying around we were never a full threat to get him. Actually we kind of cooled on him as well and as you can see from Nevada this year, we saw something that made us cool.

Agreed that he has looked better lately and he will probably be pretty good in the future, but he would not have stepped in and played at all at GU this year and would have probably declared for the draft (which I wouldn't be shocked if he did this year) due to lack of playing time at GU and how loaded our recruiting class is with bigs.

That's true but they are behind the game and honestly where would you rather take your talent the NCAA tournament to final four or the MW Tournament tops. I expect some kind of announcement from Julian here soon. I would say at this point we are Julian's top choice and maybe his plan 1A and 1B.

I will go out on a limb and say this, the time of the decision could not be any better for us. I put out there in the other thread my prediction that we will have Suggs and Strawther (and Harris) all verbal by June 1st. That is entirely MY PREDICTION at this point in time, all I have heard from my people is by the end of the summer that's their hope.

Strawther said the final call came down to comfort, family atmosphere and which school presented the right situation for him.

“The biggest thing was really making the right decision for me and not letting too much of what everyone else has to say affect my decision. So just trusting myself and choosing the spot where I think it’s going to be the best for me.”

Well, they sure have quite the class, two 5 star recruits, one of them being Watson's nemesis, McDaniel. I wonder if McDaniel and Watson exchanged sides of the state, if they'd swap the 4 and 5 stars, or whether McDaniel really does have the edge on Watson?

Caldwell,

Couple questions, kinda new to following recruiting at a molecular level - though I’ve always followed it and known right away who we recruited, when guys commit to us and things of that nature.

I was reading an article last night after Donny said he was stepping away from coaching at Gonzaga and Julian had stated Donny was a MAJOR factor of his recruitment. Do you think it effects Julian’s commitment at all? And secondly, do you think Donny told Julian that he probably wasn’t going to coach past 2019?

Itís difficult to make a comparison between the two. They are very different players. Both can impact a game depending on the circumstances and matchups.

Great questions. First Donny has always been a big help in the recruiting process at GU, but unlike a lot of schools we use a whole staff approach. Julian is familiar with everyone on the staff and loves Few as well. I do know Julian and Donny were close, but Few knew Donny was leaving after this season for the past two years, so it had to of come up in discussions with Julian. I cannot guarantee it did, but nothing I have heard indicates that tomorrows decision will be affected by Donny stepping away. When you read the article from the Las Vegas paper Julian talks about Style of Play a lot, that is the biggest reason GU is going to land a huge recruit tomorrow. That being said we can all thank Donny for getting the ball rolling here, though everyone has been in on the process.

McDaniels hasn't committed to UW yet. So far the other 5 star is transfer Quade Green.

When I first saw McDaniels at State a year ago v Watson/G Prep, he was rated somewhere in the lower part of the top 100, maybe 70ish? I posted then that he was vastly underrated (probably due to his lack of weight/muscle?). IMO he has more physical talent than Watson, and on that basis the higher rating is accurate. Played a lot of point forward for Fed Way, kind of like Brandon Roy did at UW, and had a ton of assists for a 6'10 guy as well as being a dominant shot blocker.

As a Zag recruit, I'd rather have Watson because he's a multi-year guy v one and done, and is a well coached, high iq team guy with the knack for making the big play at crunch time. Has a talent for winning the big games that I think will transfer.

Some times 4 star guys are better to have than 5's.

I agree with this especially with the guys we have coming in. They are all fringe 5 star guys, who are here 2-3 years. We don't get one and done's very often (Collins, NWG, and now BC though the last two are not real one and done's).

the other 5 star is isaiah stewart, who many evaluators feel is the most college ready one and done big in this class...perfect compliment to mcdaniels, who won't have to bang down low with stewart around and can also be deadly roaming the zone on d.

Caldwell, can you give us just 3-4 sentences on what this kid could bring? Some of us really haven't been able to follow both the Welping Box and the main forum, and I was shocked to learn he was 6'7, I don't even know if he's a wing, a SG, what.

Everything from his looks to his height to his number to his game scream JAYSON TATUM to me. Does anyone see the same?

He is an elite scorer, he can score from anywhere on the floor. He is still young and still growing, I would say he is a wing, but with our positionless basketball he is either a 2-3. Kid will probably lead us in scoring by his Junior year, if he stays that long (which I believe he does).

Depends on who it is. This one looks like Brian Snow, he knows his stuff and is on the national stage.

I don't have the privilege of having a Crystal Ball, but mine has been on the Zags for several weeks now.

Julian is a stud. He really has a legit shot at being a Burger Boy. On top of that we now are really focused in on adding the final piece of the 2020 puzzle, Jalen Suggs. This goes a long way in that process. I was told and was sworn to keep it quiet, that Julian pretty much made up his mind on the visit. After the visit coaches stayed in contact and sealed the deal.

Oh I told you all I was confident in this one for awhile, but I could not tell you why. BTW I was told (and am allowed to say this) that Jalen enjoyed his visit maybe even more than Julian. Jalen just has a few more things he has to work out aka does he try to play football or not.

Suggs responded with, "hmmmmm....lemme think about it , but congratulations brother."

His tweet responses are pretty mixed imho. Have a feeling he chooses a football school....or awaits Duke offer. He talked Duke non stop early last Summer in numerous interviews.

Either way, we are stoked for Strawther. Big time scorer and needed athleticism/length/defense on the wing and/or big shooting guard type prospect .

If Anton plays SF, we could easily go 6'7" SG, 6'9" SF, 6'10" PF, 6'11" C the next 2 yrs.

Only our PG of the future is only 6'1", otherwise, tallest team in the Nation!

Umm, isn't that a rather big deal?

Don't NBA players drafted in the first round make more than NFL players, and isn't the projected length of career longer for a 1st round NBA draftee?

Add in not as much chance of significant, life altering injuries, more visual recognition from no helmet, and I think, given the choice, the NBA makes MORE sense. But I am not an 18 year old.

Here's the answer, and it's from 2013

The average NBA player will make $24.7 million in his career. That is based on an average salary of $5.2 million and an average career length of 4.8 years and is $18.6 million more than the career earnings for the average NFL player ($6.1 million).

No the Suggs speculation doesn't need to stop that's what a fan board is for... Sure a players specific thread should be on topic to that player but the discussion is in context to Strawther tweeting about trying to get Suggs to commit... We're all excited and thrilled to land Strawther... It's a great day to be a zag

Fair enough. You and Malastein are right about Strawther himself wanting Suggs to commit. I just want Julian to hear loud and clear how stoked ZagNation is about his commitment in his own right. Regardless of whether Suggs ZagsUp or not.

As it stands right now, a great player, yet not as good as some of the 5* guys out there.

However, I feel his ceiling is higher than most, if not all, the other SF's in this class.

Special weapon/scorer. Fluid outside shot, mid-range game, can drive, score at the rim, and has an unstoppable floater.

Actually reminds me of Ammo in a way.

There is a reason he averages 28 ppg with 8 rebs, and number of assists.

Might be a slow starter at GU, still developing strength (looks stronger than he is, very lean body, decent arms though), yet once he grows into his body, he will be an all-american type scorer for us.

And we are brilliant at creating opportunities for wings within our offense. A specialty of ours before a number of combo guards and most recently a spot up shooter the last decade or so.

By Year 2, Julian will be a star.

he's actually already pretty big for a high school wing...listed at 6'7 215 which if accurate is basically the same size as brandon clarke (without the elite athleticism of course...strawther a good but not great athlete). the ammo comparisons hold some water from a scoring standpoint....maybe a bigger norvell with a more complete all-around offensive game.
