“It’s a big-time game for any part of the season,” Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski allowed. “We’re not who we’re going to be, but they’re not either – they’re missing a really good player. They’re ahead of us as far as knowing one another and their system, and they’re strong.

“They’re a tough team to defend. They’re a tough team to beat. They’re a tough team.”

Victories against Duke, the unquestioned kingpin of the landscape, must be cherished, savored, burnished and placed on the mantel inside a glass case for perpetuity. This is a Duke program that in 2009 beat the mess out of the Zags so badly (76-41) that, as recounted in Glory Hounds, it sent Mark Few and his assistant, Ray Giacoletti, out into a Saturday-night snowstorm in New York for a long, long walk to ponder how to resurrect their fallen team.

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) Gonzaga found itself in the same position as Duke's first five opponents: appearing helpless as the Blue Devils and their rim-rattling freshmen ran past and flew over them.

So, went to my phone after the win and went to ESPN website. Their bias is so blatant that it isn't even funny. First article once you got past the headline... "Highlights on Duke Loss". Not even acknowledging the Zags. At least someone with common sense finally saw that and they fixed the title... but their fascination with Duke is pathetic.

Hey @RealJayWilliams still think Duke can beat Cavs? They looked great versus Kentucky…and Cavs have struggled at times but we both know they are pros. Glad my Zags finally got your Dukies but hope to see a rematch in MSP

ESPN's Myron Medcalf: http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/25344069/gonzaga-win-duke-had-final-four-flavor

The traditionalists who believe the one-and-done culture has corrupted the game could cheer for a Gonzaga team that started three upperclassmen and two sophomores. And Duke's four freshmen had already become the focus of a national conversation about whether the Blue Devils could compete with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The youth versus experience factor was secondary to the amount of talent on the floor, though. Zion Williamson, Cam Reddish and RJ Barrett brought multiple NBA executives to Maui this week. Rui Hachimura, a projected lottery pick who scored 20 points in the Maui Invite title game, raised his stock, too. Tre Jones, perhaps an afterthought before his stunning effort in the title game, "has grown on me," one NBA scout said.

Coach K:

"[Few has done] a marvelous job with his program," Krzyzewski said. "And it's an honor to play against him and their fan base, and it's a great game for college basketball today. The fan base is there, the effort, and two outstanding programs. That was really good basketball today."

After tonight's game, Dauster proclaiming Duke to be his national title favorite over Gonzaga, despite Tillie's return, needs more reasoning. We're talking about a missing starter, the team's leading returning scorer, one of the best three point shooters in the nation (48% last year), as well as an athletic, versatile 6-10 defender who can switch screens and who fixes the biggest problem that GU has right now: a lack of post depth. Tillie is not a role player. I get the sense that, barring injury, that we are going to see a Hachimura/Clarke/Tillie starting frontcourt at some point this year. I get the sense that it was Few's intent all along to play these three as a group, and to bring in Corey off the pine. The Zags will have league play to play around with the lineup and see how it works. But just as much as I feel it's too early to say that Killian's return will make the Zags unbeatable, it's also too early to say that he won't make them a significantly better team......a team that could cause Duke even more problems come March. In some ways, not having Killian Tillie was a bonus tonight should there be a Duke/Gonzaga rematch.

For every guy like Dauster and Norlander who bag on Rui's one on one defense (Norlander almost likes picking on Rui), I can name you two other analysts who think Rui is just fine on D and eventually will be great on D. But I guess some folks expect him to be defend like Scottie Pippen.

We knew something was wrong

On Monday, the basketball court in the Lahaina Civic Center was noticeably slippery. Dave Odom, the longtime chairman of the Maui Invite, seemed frustrated by the problem. One of the air conditioning units in the building had malfunctioned and as the warm air poured into the building every time someone opened the door, the court became a sauna full of wet spots.Odom asked his staff to work late Monday night to address the problem and the floor was much better on Tuesday. The air conditioning unit had been repaired. The ball boys and girls were relentless in cleaning up spots every time someone slipped. Problem fixed.
During Wednesday's Gonzaga-Duke game, however, the floor was slippery again. Dozens of spectators had lined the walls and blocked the exits of the building, which was packed with a sold-out crowd.

I have always said that Gonzaga runs one of the most complex offenses in the nation, and it is extremely hard to be a PG running it. It's why a guy like Kevin Pangos was so special.

And Josh Perkins. Methinks there’s a very short list of GU guard legends that could have led this team to the Maui title. He’s so important to this team. One only needs to watch the collective group of very talented players look out of sorts when josh is on the bench to really see his immense value.

Where did Stephen A Smith play?

I understand that it isn't necessary to have played to have an understanding of sports, almost any sports, but he has very little understanding of any sport. He has an opinion and a platform. I seldom have heard a truly cogent remark from him about anything.

"After attending the Fashion Institute of Technology for one year, Smith received a basketball scholarship to attend Winston-Salem State University, a historically black university in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. While in college, he played basketball under Hall of Fame coach Clarence Gaines." from Wikipedia. He sure didn't learn much.

Stephen A. Smith was able to muster up just 1 Gonzaga player's name, and he pronounced it wrong. He couldn't even remember Hachimura, the tourney MVP. There's no humanly possible way that one person could be an up-to-date expert on all sports at all times. Why are these types of clearly uninformed pundits given broad credibility?

What was our +/- while in Zone vs Man-to-man? It doesn't seem like the small amount of zone defense had any appreciable effect.

It's crazy how none of these "takes" or headlines have been able to just say "Zags Beat Duke by Playing Better Basketball". There always has to be some weird extenuating circumstance or situation.

"Duke lost because Gonzaga's zine confused them."

- Stephen A. Smith

We zoned maybe 120 seconds all game. Just a presumptuous statement on how Gonzaga could conceivably win.

Only reason we zoned is due to fatigue. Not Duke.

We couldn't stop Duke from dunking last couple mins because we were late down the floor, no longer jumping as high, moving our feet, etc.

Prior to the last few mins, we defended them straight up, and did pretty darn well limiting their athleticism/transition, by showing off our own.

How does Zone get you 10, yes 10 blocks? If anything, zone hurts your chances.

Duke struggled with our athleticism on offense. Alley oops, transition points, spreading them out, dribble drive game, etc.

Guarantee Stephen A only saw ESPN's one sided highlights (Duke dunks & blocks), and not a minute of actual game tape.

Few's teams have a reputation (https://thebiglead.com/2017/02/28/gonzaga-doesnt-deserve-a-no-1-seed-and-is-poised-to-disappoint-again/) of being a disappointment in the NCAA tournament with just one Final Four appearance in the past 19 seasons. Those questions won't go away this year until we get to March, but the talent is there for this Gonzaga squad to win a national championship.

https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2807245-gonzaga-hands-duke-1st-loss-despite-45-points-from-zion-williamson-rj-barrett

And boy, were those Duke fans salty. But that goes with the rest of the world too. When Gonzaga beats anyone, there is a laundry list of excuses why. When Gonzaga loses to anyone, they are the most overrated team in existence. Such is the life of a Gonzaga Bulldog. By now, we are used to it.
