There's some pretty interesting stuff in Matt Norlander's preseason rankings of all 353 NCAA teams in this piece from CBSSports.com (https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/news/college-basketball-rankings-1-353-from-kansas-to-no-353-and-an-interesting-fact-on-every-team/).

Most amazing is that he has the Zags at #2 out of the 353!

Here are the rankings for the rest of the WCC teams:

2 Gonzaga
51 BYU
62 St. Mary's
102 San Diego
142 USF
179 Pacific
205 LMU
225 Santa Clara
247 Portland
274 Pepperdine

I wanted to see how Matt's ranking (first column) relates to KenPom's ranking (second column)

2 9 Gonzaga
51 56 BYU
62 74 St. Mary's
102 135 San Diego
142 138 USF
179 143 Pacific
205 140 LMU
225 193 Santa Clara
247 209 Portland
274 226 Pepperdine

Do you think Lorenzo's team is really going to be that bad?

Yeah.

I hoped, and hope going forward, to see BYU and SMC in the top 50, USD top 100, and the rest 100-200. I think Pacific is on the rise, hopefully USF.

Depressing start.

...and yet if the Pom rankings are close to RPI (or whatever they intend to use to shaft the WCC), there are no 300+ anchors in there.

The bottom 5 are just awful.

Whistling thru the graveyard? Well, it's soon Halloween. And 270 and 240 are close enough to anchor level.

KenPom - #209 & #226 .... Norlander is subjective - KenPom has an analytical basis.... when was the last time the entire WCC was ranked this high?

Could be better but could be much worse...

just my opinion...

Go!! Zags!!!

I see both have USD ranked 4th as do I...it will be a very interesting season...hope we get through it undefeated!

These are all pre-season so their KenPom rankings could be lower after OOC games...fingers crossed

And some people were wondering why Coach Few had given his vote to BYU rather than St. Mary's, but it looks like other 'experts' share the same ranking.

Honest question. Isn't it usually worse?

Nevada is too high, but he's always had them way too high. They are a team that should be in the 7 to 10 range, and no way are they better than Kentucky. They don't have a national championship caliber point guard or center, and again, you're taking a big risk on ranking a team that highly that needed to stage huge comebacks to advance in last year's tournament and had the good fortune of facing a Cincinnati team that I am 99.9% certain would've beaten them if they had made the sweet 16 in the past 3 years. Cincy played like they hadn't been in the tournament in a gazillion years. They were clearly the better team. Caleb Martin is really good, but he's viewed as a back end 2nd rounder at the very best. They lack NBA talent. Not sure the roster has a guy like Norvell or Rui who could take over the tournament, individually or as a tandem. They also have defensive issues. They were 108 in defensive efficiency last season, and that was AFTER the NCAA tournament run. It would make for an interesting regional final, that's for sure, but I sure as heck would rather face them than UK.

I still have concerns about Kansas bringing in THAT MANY transfers and making it into a cohesive enterprise. It's something Self hasn't really done at Kansas. Few has proven he can do it. Bill has had transfers before, but he has never had to rely on THIS MANY transfers before. They are still going to be outstanding, but it's just something I wonder about.

181 WSU - second lowest rated Pac-12 team (Cal at 190 is the lowest rated Power 5 team)
260 EWU

And people wonder why these two teams were removed from the schedule... Looks like WSU is going to have to rely on football's College Game Day to keep them happy thru the winter.

yes...only required to play Portland and Pepperdine once each
