Leaks were scarce last year, and virtually nonexistent for the summer scrimmages. I suspect we will get some information but it will probably come from Michigan St. sources.

It’s great to see Izzo and Few still connected.

Big difference between scrims and exhibitions. Former offers way more latitude for coaches to teach and tweak and stop play during the session, which is often three halves or more.

Agreed on both fronts. I wish we still heard juicy leaks like back in the day.

Example: Sacre and Harris one year destroyed the competition and I was so excited about our frontcourt...

Here's a thought. Distance from E Lansing to Denver, CO ..... 1,200 miles

Distance from Spokane to Denver, CO ... 1,100 miles

Seems to me there's a better than even chance the Zags will have their preseason "secret" scrimmage where they always have it. Denver.

And speaking of Denver ... the hue and cry of 6 seed Seton Hall about Gonzaga's "home" game as an 11 seed in '16 was pretty telling. 1,100 miles to travel to the "home" gym in Denver. Right.

As for the "leaks" ... a former player's dad was always part of the secret scrimmage crew ... i.e. timekeeper I think ... and he'd "spill" a bit of info to eager ears (in fact I think he kept score as well). He isn't involved any more. And a former coach's brother also used to "chat" a bit off the record. That inside source dried up as well. Although they aren't as frequent as they once were ... there are still some tidbits that float to the service from time to time. (i.e. at some point relatively soon I'm hopeful of (and in fact "expecting") a brand new "Welcome Geno" thread). Of course, nothing's in the bag until it's in the bag ....

But it's nice the Zags are scrimmaging Michigan State.

there is a more laissez-faire approach to scrimmages this year.

results, reports, commentary, even play-by-plays are being relayed to media...and beyond. Some of these scrimmages are posting individual box scores, etc.

The participating schools are not allowed to promote the event, yet can post results/scores. We've certainly been more lock 'n key than most.

That said, I expect we'll hear more this year compared to previous years.

Kispert would be getting ZN hype right now had he not gotten hurt. Before injury he was starting for a top 25 team as a true freshman. Lots of times biggest jump is from Frosh to Soph year. I’m not surprised and won’t be surprised if he leads team in scoring in quite a few games.

I like this starting 5 a lot if Tillie can handle it mentally and be a spark off the bench. Talk about a super sub. Protects one of our top 3 bigs from early foul trouble. Rui can move to the 3 when Tillie comes in. Perkins, Norvell, Kispert together = shooters galore.

Gonzaga, overall, is further along than Michigan State. “Good enough to be in anyone’s top five in the country,” one source from the MSU staff said. The Zags are heavily experienced, especially in the backcourt, and their game-readiness was obvious.

Gonzaga’s guards, though, were the difference. Josh Perkins, who handed out 196 assists last season, finished with 13 dimes and two turnovers. Norvell and Kispert both went 7 for 11 from the field and combined for 46 points. Kispert, who was slowed for much of his freshman year with a nagging ankle sprain, was a surprise to Michigan State — drilling five 3-pointers and grabbing seven rebounds in 31 minutes.

A couple other short tidbits from same piece ZN references to whet your appetite and convince you to do yourself a favor and put a subscription on your Christmas wish list:

The Zags stretched the lead back out on a parade of free throws and then blitzed MSU with three made 3-pointers in the final minute of the half. Petrusev hit a pair, sandwiching one by Kispert.

The Zags played a seven-man rotation with Perkins, Clarke, Hachimura, Norvell and Kispert starting, and Petrusev and Crandall playing reserve minuted. Greg Foster Jr. and Jeremy Jones each played one minute in the scrimmage.

More from the Athletic:

“Gonzaga finished with five players in double figures. ....The Zags, who finished last season with a 32-5 record and lost in the Sweet 16 as a No. 4 seed, shot 53.6 percent from the floor.”

“The Zags made 37-of-69 shots from the field, including 9 of 21 free throws, and handed out 19 assists against eight turnovers. Even without Tillie, they outscored MSU 46-30 in the paint as Hachimura and Clarke combined for 14 field goals and 33 points.“

“Michigan State led for much of the second half (after the score reset) thanks to some strong play from Ward. The Zags pushed back and pulled even, tying the score with just over five minutes remaining. The wheels came off again, though, as Gonzaga outscored MSU 16-10 in the final 5:18. The Zags pushed ahead with some key baskets by Hachimura, Clarke and Geno Crandall, and made 19-of-29 shots in the half.”

Ankle or hip?

Has a history of both....hopefully neither.

I said last year ad nauseum, Tillie might be our best overall talent, yet much prefer him off the bench.

He is a "ramp up" guy, feeds off energy, getting warmed up, versatile, & a great chance of pace off, brings energy, bounce, & can spread defence, drive, block shot, dunk, whatever is needed

Personally, I'd like to see him continue to be first off the bench.

His single best game during the regular season was when Few didn't start him, sent message, & he came in to score 28 pts as 6th man.

Kendra Andrews (gonzaga writer for the Athletic) is a really good young journalist. Thanks to everyone for sharing everything. I could hardly wait to get on my computer after waking up this morning, It's really nice to see that Norvell has bounced back. He was about to have a great year last year. Hoping for more games from him like the scrimmage. Clark seems to have scored 15 and Rui 18 down low. I think that's outstanding. It also sounds like Josh played great. I believe he's at his best when he's making good passes. I didn't see anything written about rebounds. Rebounding is one of the most important stats for me this year because we are not all that tall down low. I know Clarke is supposed to be a killer rebounder.

i think it will be Josh, Norvell, Rui, Clark, Tillie....Crandell and Kispert as the main subs. Barring injuries this might be the tightest rotation Few has had.
In meaningful games I could see the minutes as follows:

PG--Josh 30 Geno 10
SG--Zach 25, Geno 15
Sg--Rui 15, Kispert 20, Zach 5
SF--Tillie 20, Rui 15.Kispert 5
C--Clarke 30 Tillie 10

Mind you I dont know a lot about Petrosev, but from what I have heard he may eventually be able to garner 10 minutes a game in the big games in a stretch 4 kind of role. I dont think the young guards will play much at all, except in blowouts

Mind you I dont know a lot about Petrosev, but from what I have heard he may eventually be able to garner 10 minutes a game in the big games in a stretch 4 kind of role. I dont think the young guards will play much at all, except in blowouts

I was going to remind you of Petrosev...he doesn't appear in your comment, but does appear in the 'reply with quote'.

Who cares if you give up 90 if you score 105, lol. But seriously Clarke is a defensive monster.

i think it will be Josh, Norvell, Rui, Clark, Tillie....Crandell and Kispert as the main subs. Barring injuries this might be the tightest rotation Few has had.
In meaningful games I could see the minutes as follows:

PG--Josh 30 Geno 10
SG--Zach 25, Geno 15
Sg--Rui 15, Kispert 20, Zach 5
SF--Tillie 20, Rui 15.Kispert 5
C--Clarke 30 Tillie 10

I mostly agree besides starters. Also think Norvell is around 30mpg and Clarke closer to 25mpg. Oh and Tillie closer to 25mpg.

More from the Athletic:

ďThe Zags made 37-of-69 shots from the field, including 9 of 21 free throws, and handed out 19 assists against eight turnovers. Even without Tillie, they outscored MSU 46-30 in the paint as Hachimura and Clarke combined for 14 field goals and 33 points.ď

Before that part in the article:

"One reason for the game being so high-scoring was both teams living on the foul line. Michigan State went 22 for 31 and Gonzaga went 27 for 36."

So it was supposedly 9 of 21 3 point field goals for Gonzaga

"Gonzaga finished with five players in double figures. Corey Kispert scored a game-high 24 points, making 5-of-8 3-point attempts, while Zach Norvell Jr. (22), Rui Hachimura (19), Brandon Clarke (14) and Filip Petrusev (11) filled out the scoring. The Zags, who finished last season with a 32-5 record and lost in the Sweet 16 as a No. 4 seed, shot 53.6 percent from the floor and scored 25 points on Michigan Stateís 19 turnovers."

the coaches must have asked the refs to emphasize some of the new rules put in place to free up the game...start getting guys used to it before the games count.

Given there's an article in the Detroit FP, it seems like the secret scrimmages aren't as big a deal to keep wholly secret as before. That is refreshing.

I understand the whole purpose in the "secret" part. But so long as tickets are not distributed, no video, etc., it seems harmless to see results.

I like the direction.

I think that Rui is the most likely to be at 25 minutes per game out of the bigs although I expect both him and Tillie to be in that range. Without going via position as I think many guys can slide between 2 and 3 spots, here is what I'd expect to see:

Perkins - 30
Clarke - 30
Norvell - 30
Rui - 25
Tillie - 25
Crandall - 25
Kispert - 20
Petrusev/Ayayi - 15

To help me out, I went back to the minutes of the SMC-GU game at the WCC tournament in 2017. What I saw was the most of the starters played 30+ minutes. So here's my stab at this year's rotation:

Perkins, Clarke, Norvell, Tillie, and Rui all play 30 minutes, leaving a grand total of 50 for:

Kispert: 16
Crandall: 12, perhaps more as the season progresses
Petrusev: 12
Jones: 6 (Few likes upperclassmen on the court over underclassmen)
Ayayi: 4

We'll see more of the bench during blowouts, but I expect a tight rotation for the biggest games during OOC. A lot is riding on these games, I don't expect Few to experiment much.

I think if we have blowouts, then you will see the starters down to about 25 and the rest splitting those 25 minutes in those games. How many of those games. I will guess 10 to 15. That will spread the minutes out

If we have blowouts? That'll be a sure bet. Remember the Room 42 intramural team at Prep? That will be the Zags vs 1/2 the teams we play this year. Even I got to play in many games...

I hope Gonzaga plays a "Blitzkrieg" style offence. With this much firepower available I say run and gun. This year we are lean and fast. Multiple rotations available. Our only limiting factor is the dreaded tv time out that seem to come when we get on a roll. I'm so excited to watch this season.

While I agree with this sentiment, I think having the scrimmage called uber-tight was a smart thing. Give the players a worst case scenario in terms of reffing and teach them to work within those confines. Better there than a game of consequence.

did Petrusev play vs MSU?

They said we played our "top 7", and found many mentions of Geno, Perks, Rui, and Norvell.

Couldn't find anything to confirm Filip played or not

Gonzaga finished with five players in double figures. Corey Kispert scored a game-high 24 points, making 5-of-8 3-point attempts, while Zach Norvell Jr. (22), Rui Hachimura (19), Brandon Clarke (14) and Filip Petrusev (11) filled out the scoring.

The Zags played a seven-man rotation with Perkins, Clarke, Hachimura, Norvell and Kispert starting, and Petrusev and Crandall playing reserve minuted. Greg Foster Jr. and Jeremy Jones each played one minute in the scrimmage.
