Baseball Adds Former Zag Evan Wells to Staff

Wells named Director of Player Development

SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga baseball welcomes former Zag Evan Wells to the staff for the 2019 season, as announced Thursday afternoon by Gonzaga baseball head coach Mark Machtolf. Wells returns to the Pacific Northwest after coaching stops at Longwood, Dartmouth, Creighton, Washington and Whitworth.

"It's really, really exciting to be returning," Wells said. "I played here, played for Coach Machtolf and Danny Evans, and I played with Brandon Harmon…it's coming back home for me, which is really exciting."

Wells will act as Director of Player Development for the 2019 season. He will be primarily responsible for baseball operations, including travel arrangements and meals.

"We are thrilled to have Evan Wells joining our staff," Machtolf said. "He was an outstanding player for us throughout his career and defined what is means to be a Zag. Evan is an outstanding coach and maintains the exact skillset that will have an immediate impact on our program on many different levels."

Wells arrives in Spokane after spending one season as assistant coach at Longwood University in Farmville, Va. During his time with the Lancers, Wells worked with hitters and infielders and helped Longwood to its fourth-straight Big South Conference Tournament appearance.

Prior to his stint at Longwood, Wells spent five seasons at Dartmouth where he also worked primarily with infielders and hitters. He assisted the Big Green to three division championships in five years, and he molded Dartmouth into one of the top defenses in the Ivy League. In four of Wells' five seasons, Dartmouth led the league in fielding percentage and ranked second in 2016 with a .972 percentage.

In his first season in Hanover, Dartmouth set a school record with 32 victories and posted a fielding percentage of .977, the 12th-best mark in the country. In 2014, the Big Green bested their 2012 fielding mark with a .979 percentage, the ninth-best mark in the country. During Wells tenure, 10 infielders garnered all-conference recognition.

Wells spent a short time at Creighton prior to his arrival at Dartmouth, but he had a full season with Washington in 2011-12 under head coach Lindsay Meggs as a student manager. Before his time at UW, Wells served as an assistant coach with Division III Whitworth University in Spokane. He also served as the infield and hitting coach during his time with the Pirates.

Wells, a Gonzaga alum, graduated in 2009 following a stellar three-year career. He started at second base and was the lead-off hitter for three seasons (2007-09), and he finished his career with a .310 batting average and an on-base percentage of .439 in nearly 800 plate appearances. As a senior in 2009, Wells helped the Zags reach the NCAA Regionals for the first time since 1981.
