View Full Version : Maui Seeding & Match-ups Thread

Last summer Maui announced seeding and match-ups on July 18. So anytime, any day now we should be getting the news.

Keep your eyes peeled. I think Duke as #1 seed should be expected. Zags should be #2. Every game will be a resume' builder.

I'm guessing:

"1". Duke vs 8. Illinois
4. Xavier vs 5. Arizona
3. Auburn vs 6. Iowa St.
2. Gonzaga vs 7. San Diego St.

Of course seeds are unofficial since they just make a bracket. Here's hoping the Zags don't get foiled by an SEC team again in the semis as I really, really want a matchup with Duke.

Iowa State seems a safer choice by the TV execs would run the event.

1-3 seeds look good....could probably flip a coin for seeds 4-8. No clearly bad team in this one.

Iowa State seems a safer choice by the TV execs would run the event.

Like Iowa St. in lieu of SDST because they'll be the easier out and the execs want GU to move on?

Not sure I'd agree. Iowa St. should be seriously improved. Wigginton will be one of the most dynamic guards in the country & Lard is a very talented emerging forward. I've also heard good things from Iowa St. people that Shayok is going to have a pretty big impact this season as a redshirt senior. They will be much better than last season.

Barttorvik currently has Iowa St. 39 and SD St. 40 heading into this season. I suspect tie goes to the bigger conference team.

Somehow, I would rather have Iowa State or Arizona instead of San Diego State for the first game, if we are the second seed.

I might agree but I think Arizona will be better than many people expect with the transfers they've got and a chip on their shoulder. Iowa St. will certainly be much improved. There isn't much to separate the 3 and the organizers ultimately aren't building a true, objective bracket. TV considerations will come into play. And honestly I'm not concerned about any of them. If GU plays the way they should, they get the W. And hopefully the sting from losing to SDSU last season will be good motivation to blow them out in Maui as revenge of sorts should they get matched up.

Xavier lost everyone. I can't see them as the #4 seed.

I'm being loose with seeding. I don't expect the organizers to seed truly objectively, obviously TV considerations will impact the bracket. But Xavier isn't going to fall off the map, either. Yeah they lost the bulk of their offensive production but they still bring back some promising unheralded guys along with some solid transfers. And I expect their defense to improve this season given many of their key losses were pretty poor in that facet. (much like St.Mary's, who I think too many Zags fans may be dismissing as an tourney afterthought this season)

1-3 seeds look good....could probably flip a coin for seeds 4-8. No clearly bad team in this one.

You got it. While I think GU (in November anyhow) is 1 and Auburn/Duke a push for 2/3, the most logical seeding scenario is 1.Duke 2. GU 3. Auburn as far as running the tourney goes.

After that it is a crapshoot. Barttorvik has Iowa St. @ 39, SDSU @ 40, Xavier @ 43, Illinois @ 47 and Arizona @ 57.

He also projects Hachimura & Tillie to each average less than 10 points per game. Grain of salt

The format/layout of that bracket is misleading. To me, it looks like we potentially play a Duke next. To a couple others I’ve discussed this with, they see it as AZ next.

Which is it??

That’s how you’d normally have a bracket formatted, but it’s bothering me that they never connect the AZ region and GU region. Almost looks like our path/2nd game leads to Duke.

The other half of the line coming out of GU's first round game leads directly to Arizona's first round game? Not sure where the confusion is coming from.

1. gonzaga
2. duke
3. auburn

5. iowa state
6. xavier
7. sdsu
8. illinois

can't take too much issue with that... tho i'd bump az down and sdsu up a bit.

7 eastern on Tday eve would be more prime time.

I guess the question still is, why do they cater to the eastern time zone?

Have the game at 4PM Pacific time and see how many from the east coast miss it because they can't figure out time zones!

While Canadian R.J. Barrett was very impressive playing against seasoned professionals for Canada last month, it might be a bit really to expect him to get them over the hump.

I would much rather be playing them early than late in the season.

He will be the #1 pick in the next NBA draft and is a complete player with a humble disposition.

If Duke end up playing the Zags in the final it will be memorable game that's for sure.

A taste of the Illini.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Three hunks of jerk chicken rest comfortably and tantalizingly atop a bed of rice, and though this is not Trent Frazier’s first helping of the catered lunch from Caribbean Grill, it is a to-go portion. It therefore requires the utmost care. I need it, the 170-pound Frazier informs his visitor. So before the sophomore guard continues a conversation outside the Illinois men’s basketball offices, he is hoping Aaron Jordan can record a very early assist.

That’s because the latest iteration of the Illinois basketball reboot is rooted in mystery and experimentation, at least for the foreseeable future. Four players on this team saw regular minutes last winter and provide some relative certainty. There are also as many as eight new faces, which leaves very little reason to assume anything on a team coming off a ho-hum 14-win season. “I’ve given, on purpose this summer, fewer rules,” Underwood says. “I’ve given guidelines and expectations. But from the Xs and Os standpoint, I’ve let them play more, to work on playing, if that makes sense. I’ve not given them, ‘This guy does this, and this guy does that.’ I’ve let them play. Because I need to find out. Let’s figure out what they can and can’t do. Give them a base, and then let them go.”

Best possible matchup: Duke vs. Gonzaga. This could be a potential Final Four preview in November. Duke welcomes in the top three incoming freshman in the country, but the Blue Devils need to mesh quickly. Gonzaga can be a preseason top-three team, bringing back a loaded frontcourt led by Rui Hachimura (http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/4066648/rui-hachimura) and an experienced backcourt with Josh Perkins (http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/3155941/josh-perkins) at the point.

Why watch: It's the premier nonconference tournament this season, with a legitimate national title contender in Gonzaga, a couple more preseason top-10 teams in Duke and Auburn, two of the most consistent programs nationally in Arizona and Xavier, plus breakout players in San Diego State's Jalen McDaniels (http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/4066731/jalen-mcdaniels), Iowa State's Lindell Wigginton (http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/4277887/lindell-wigginton) and Illinois' Ayo Dosunmu (http://www.espn.com/college-sports/basketball/recruiting/player/_/id/224172/ayo-dosunmu).

ESPN
