Gonzaga baseball earned a No. 3 regional seed and will take on second-seeded UCLA in the Minneapolis Regional, hosted by No. 14 overall national seed Minnesota on June 1-4.

Gonzaga (32-22) and UCLA (36-19) will throw out the first pitch at 11 a.m. PT/1 p.m. CT at Seibert Field on Friday on ESPNU, followed by (1) Minnesota (41-13) and (4) Canisius (35-20) at 7 p.m. CT.

The Zags earned the West Coast Conference automatic qualifying bid after winning the WCC Tournament Championship on Saturday with a 17-2 rout of Pepperdine. GU will play in a regional for the second time in the last three years and third time overall under head coach Mark Machtolf.

I think it is worth its own thread. These Regionals are step 1, they need to win 3 games. Either sweep through or come up and beat a team twice. I am excited it is on TV and will record it.

Go Zags!

I didn't get a chance to see the game, though I would, but - anyway, GU led most from what I read, then lost 6-5 in one of the best games of the day.

There's not a ton of daylight between GU 3 seed at regional and UCLA as 2 seed. Now GU must win over whomever the 4 seed is, then beat the loser of UCLA - Winner Game One (likely Minny), and then beat that team 2x - daunting, to say the least. One game at a time.

I feel awful for the kid who came in the 9th inning with a 5-2 Zags lead.

Gave up 4 runs on 4 hits, and the walk-off hit (not sure why he wasn't pulled sooner). Probably preserving arms for more games this wkend.

Might be awhile before forgetting this moment, not every season you play in NCAA Tourney in baseball...hoping he gets a chance to redeem himself.

GU's starting pitcher held strong for 8 innings, giving up 5 hits, 2 runs, & 9 K's.

Today's game looks like it could be post-poned, as weather is rainy/windy/thunderstorms.

I lay that at the feet of the aluminum bat. Good pitches that can break wood bats can be turned into hits when the bats are aluminum. I didn't see the final inning, but all four hits were singles, and he was ahead in the count to most of the batters. NCAA Division I should get rid of aluminum bats.

The Oklahoma-MS State was a snoozer, it was 16-10 in the 8th inning.

Is the game on espnu?? I too hate those aluminum bats. Wood composite bats are nearly perfected.

Zags up 8-2 over Canisius, top of the 7th, Zags on first and second, two out.

Zags up 8-2 in top of 7th - which means nothing, as we learned yesterday. Though, it is better than being down 8-2 in the 7th. Scores can be checked https://www.ncaa.com/scoreboard/baseball/d1/2018/06/02

So, tomorrow another loser-out game against the loser of UCLA and Minny.

If they win that, they have to win twice the next day?

Again, tough slog, but they have to believe they can beat UCLA.

UCLA loses in the 10th. We get them at noon on espn3. I'm so glad the kids won today but our pitching need to step up. We maybe short on starters. eek.

Doc from what I read, GU has an excellent pitching staff but kinda weak on hitting...fingers are crossed.

Has GU ever made it to the Super Regionals?

Zags would still need to win 3 in a row to make the Super Regional. That opening rd loss really hurt our chances. We had UCLA on the ropes too.

We'd need to beat UCLA at noon today, then advance to play MN at 5pm, a double header. IF we were to win both games today, we'd force an elimination game on Monday vs MN. And of course, need to win that game vs the host/home team to move on...

I know medicine and I know pitching. The mechanics of the first 3 pitchers we've seen is just lousy ie. falling off the mound to the left, throwing across the body and ending with you back turned away from the plate so you can't field a ball...........just not good. Needs correction.
Most fastballs in the high 70s, lowest 80's with roundhouse curveballs....High schoolers with bad habits . At this level FB's should be in the high 80's to low 90's.

We won games with superior fielding and great batting. We won yesterday and should have beaten UCLA 5-1. It's not the pitching, it's the things I listed above. Hope we win today. I also hope everyone returns but Coach needs to scour the hills for pitching for next year.
I'm just glad we've gotten this far. Amazing what a superior basketball program gets you with the announcers who seem to know everything about us. Good will to be sure.

Loss10-4 to UCLA ends the season.

Awful approach at the plate today, combined with a terrible umpire.

We looked sleepy compared to the first two days/games.

UCLA came out aggressive and focused, and we didnt wake up til the 8th inning. Too little too late.

Gave up 7 runs with 2 outs which is tough.

The guys should hang their heads high, great season. They got to play 3 more games when rest of WCC was sitting at home.

Hope Gophers blast the Bruins tonight!
