Be thankful the Zags weren't sent to Texas. We're entering a stretch of 10 straight days of 100 degree temps. Saturday is forecast to have a high of 107.

Idiotic Texas Rangers had two afternoon games this past weekend. Temps in the mid to hi 90s, no wind, no clouds.

Seems like we went straight from the end of winter into summer, with a spring that lasted less than two weeks. A month ago, we were still in the 40s.

Which one-bid league has the best chance at representation in Super Regionals?

Of the 19 one-bid leagues included in the 2018 DI championship, the three representatives that instantly stick out are Cal State Fullerton (Big West), Gonzaga (West Coast) and San Diego State (Mountain West). The Titans boast plenty of recent postseason success and experience, reaching the CWS in two of the past three years. The Bulldogs are one of the more interesting teams in the tournament and outscored their opponents 34-5 in three games of the WCC tournament, including a 17-2 victory in the final against No. 1 seed Pepperdine. The Aztecs won 39 games this season and rank in the top 10 in team batting average (.305) and hits (623).

SPOKANE, Wash. — Third-seeded Gonzaga baseball fell 6-5 after a four-run ninth by second-seeded UCLA on Friday in the NCAA Minneapolis Regional in Minneapolis, Minn.

GU (32-23) led 5-2 heading to the ninth, but wasn’t able to hold on as the Bruins (37-19) scored four runs on four hits to stun the Zags.

“That was a heartbreaking loss,” head coach Mark Machtolf said. “I thought Daniel [Bies] pitched really well, and we battled. We need to get past this one and be ready to go tomorrow.”

Starter Daniel Bies spun a fantastic game on the mound, going 7.2 innings and giving up just two runs on five hits with nine strikeouts and two walks. Casey Legumina entered in the eighth to end the frame and then wasn’t able to keep the Bruins off the board in the ninth.

At the plate, Branson Trube was 2-for-2, scored three times and knocked home a run. Austin Pinorini reached three times with one hit and two walks, scoring once and driving in a run.

GU got on the board with a pair of early runs in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. Nick Brooks hit a double off the wall in right field and Jack Machtolf followed with a hard-hit sacrifice fly to plate the second run.

The Zags followed with another in the third and one more in the sixth, both coming on sacrifice flies. In the third, Trube picked up the RBI, and then Jake Vieth knocked home a run with a flyout in the sixth.

UCLA battled back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, getting four hits in the inning of off Bies. The Zag starter pitched out of the jam, getting a strikeout to leave two Bruins stranded.

GU then got to the UCLA bullpen in the top of the eighth, getting one more run in the frame. After starter Jake Bird got the first two outs, GU put the next three on with two walks and hit. Trube then came home on a wild pitch to push the score to 5-2.

In the bottom of the ninth, the first two batters reached for UCLA and after an out, the Bruins got three straight hits and a sacrifice fly to score four runs.

Gonzaga will be back on the field on Saturday at 11 a.m. PT/1 p.m. CT against the loser of Friday night’s Minnesota/Canisius match-up. Links to live coverage will be available on GoZags.com.

Baseball Stays Alive with 8-2 Win Over Canisius

GU pounded out 17 hits and got 8.0 innings from Alek Jacob

MINNEAPOLIS — Freshman Alek Jacob pitched 8.0 innings in his NCAA Tournament debut and the Gonzaga offense ripped off 17 hits on the way to an 8-2 win over fourth-seeded Canisius on Saturday afternoon in the NCAA Minneapolis Regional.

The game started two hours late due to heavy rain in the area, but the Gonzaga offense didn’t have any lull at all, posting six runs in the first four innings.

“It was a great response by the guys today,” head coach Mark Machtolf said. “To get those two runs in the first really got things going for us. You got to see what has been the most impressive part of what Alek has done this year, and I wasn’t surprised to see him throw well in that spot.”

Jacob was up to the task in his first-career NCAA Tournament start, allowing just two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks in his 8.0 innings of work. Taylor Davis came on for the ninth and retired all three batters he faced.

On offense, Gunnar Schubert and Austin Pinorini had three hits apiece to lead the way to a 17-hit day for the Zags. Schubert ended his day just a double short of the cycle, getting a single, triple and home run to go along with two RBI and one run scored. Pinorini had three RBI to go with his three singles. Four more Zags had two hits each with Ernie Yake, Jack Machtolf, Branson Trube and Carson Breshears.

GU got the bats rolling in the first inning with the first three batters of the game reaching via two walks and a single by Schubert. Pinorini then brought home the first two runs of the game with a single through the right side.

After a scoreless second, the Zags then put up two more in the third and fourth to push the score to 6-2. Pinorini and Schubert were again the catalysts with Schubert hitting a solo homer to right and Pinorini driving home another with a single in the third. Then in the fourth, Schubert followed a Yake RBI double with an RBI triple.

The Zags then added a run on a two-out RBI single by Breshears in the fifth inning and an RBI single by Isaac Barrera in the seventh to make it 8-2.

Canisius put the first two runners on in the eighth, but Jacob got the next three on fly balls to get out of the jam without any damage.

Gonzaga will face the loser of Saturday night’s Minnesota/UCLA match-up at 2 p.m. CT/12 p.m. PT on Sunday. Links to live coverage will be available on GoZags.com.

Baseball's Season Ends with 10-4 Loss to No. 18 UCLA

Gonzaga scored all four runs in the seventh and eighth innings

June 3, 2018

Box Score (http://www.gozags.com/sports/m-basebl/stats/2017-2018/gon57.html)

MINNEAPOLIS -- Gonzaga baseball didn't get its offense going until late in a 10-4 loss to second-seeded UCLA to knock the Zags out of the NCAA Minneapolis Regional on Sunday.

The Zags went down 5-0 heading into the seventh inning, but weren't able to hold down the UCLA offense as they mounted a rally. The loss effectively ends GU's season at 33-24, while UCLA (38-20) moves on to face Minnesota in the regional final.

"My hats off to UCLA, they played a great game and deserved to win today," head coach Mark Machtolf said. "I thought these two [Gunnar Schubert and Branson Trube] and our seniors really gave it their all today, UCLA just got the hits they needed to with two outs. I thought Mac [Lardner] settled in and gave us a chance to win. We were just working really hard to get that tying run to the plate. I was really proud of our guys just battling to the end and not giving up."

On the mound, Mac Lardner went 6.1 innings, allowing five runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts and one walk. The GU offense was led by two hits from Gunnar Schubert and a pair of RBIs on a home run by Carson Breshears. Senior Branson Trube knocked in a run on the day as well.

UCLA put together three hits in the top of the first off of Lardner and took a 2-0 lead. After a run in the third and two more in the sixth, the Bruins had pushed the lead to 5-0.

GU got its first two hits and first run of the day in the seventh inning when Schubert ripped a double and then scored on an RBI single from Trube.

UCLA answered with three in the eighth and to make it 8-1, but GU wasn't done keeping the pressure on. With a runner on, Carson Breshears crushed a home run to right-center to make it 8-3. Pinch hitter Slade Heggen then came on and ripped a double to centerfield and later scored on a double by Schubert to bring it to 8-4.

The Bruins then posted two more with two out in the top of the ninth before shutting down a two-on rally by the Zags in the bottom of the final frame.
