Here's a link to the article in the Spokesman with an interview with Few:

http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2018/may/22/visiting-japanese-media-have-plenty-of-questions-f/

Mark Few: “We want to have a great regular season, we want to win the conference and the conference tournament, and then hopefully work our way through the NCAA Tournament and get back to a Final Four, and see if we can finish off that last step and win a national championship. That’s the goal. Obviously, Rui is going to be a huge part of that. The next step for him now is to take on a major role, and night-in and night-out be a guy we can count on.”

This is a Blanchette column more about Rui and the media:

Just the other day, the JBA ran a full-page ad in Asahi Shimbun, a Japanese daily newspaper, to tout the World Cup games with Hachimura’s picture underneath the declaration “HOPE is coming back.”

At least they passed on “Savior of Japanese Basketball!”

For those curious to know what the ad looked like. The large text at the top does say "Hope is coming back."
(希望 - kibou - "Hope", が、帰ってくる - ga, kaettekuru - "is coming back / is returning")

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DdhX0j9VwAIXwd7.jpg

Next game is 29 June 2018 vs Australia. National team is winless in pool play.

That’s a great cover photo. Thanks for sharing.

Very cool. So awesome having a growing japanese fan base interested in the Zags. Would be awesome to keep that pipeline open over the years.

Not to be a debbie-downer here, but is there much bandwidth in the Japanese pipeline? Rui seems like an exception, especially since he's only the 5th Japanese-born NCAA basketball player in history (or something to that effect).

I don't think that Japan is the hotbed of basketball for a " pipeline" to exist.

I took it to mean a pipeline to Japanese interest in Gonzaga. It would be fun to be the national team of Japan. Certainly not for players.

Per these tweets (in Japanese), video footage from the Japanese media day will be broadcast tonight and tomorrow morning on Japanese TV, in conjunction with the official roster announcement for the June 29 game vs. Australia that happened earlier today. Might leak on to youtube in the upcoming days.

Wow Nick Fazekas? The Nevada guy? I was wondering whatever happened to him just a few weeks ago!

He has been dominating japanese league, and he has become a naturalized few mouth ago. He would help national team like Ira.

Did he marry a japanese woman like Ira to become naturalized?

YouTube clip for those curious. Gonzaga footage comes around 2:20 mark.

Also for those wondering why Nick Fazekas is playing for the Japanese team, these tweets (in Japanese) give some insight.

https://twitter.com/y_takefield/status/1006100195975692288
https://twitter.com/y_takefield/status/1006100699078258688

https://twitter.com/y_takefield/status/1006102878560239618

English tl;dr: Technically Fazekas is not allowed to represent the Japanese team under FIBA regulations, even though he said "I want to play as a Japanese." since he already represented the US in 2005 in the U21 FIBA World Championship (no longer happening). FIBA rules state "Players who played as FIBA representatives after their 17th birthday cannot play as representatives of other countries" "Athletes who naturalized before 16 years old shall not be treated as naturalized." However, there is also a special case that "If it is deemed to lead to development in basketball, it will be allowed by the authority of the FIBA Secretary General". The Japanese team spokesperson basically said "We asked the Americans if it was okay for Fazekas to play on the Japanese team and they said yes."

Also to clarify, the roster posted above is provisional; based on this article ZagsNative posted in the general 2018 FIBA Tournament thread, it sounds like the final roster will consist of half of this current roster. Though I wouldn't see why there would be all this Rui hype if he didn't end up on the final roster in the end (unless something drastic like injury/personal)

Wonder if GU will see an uptick in enrollment from Japan. Outside of basketball, this is good advertising for GU... on the cheap.

There already is Mukogawa Fort Wright institute Culteral center, so it would n't surprise me. The Mukogawa folks seem to be young Japanese woman, so having young men join them in Spokane would seem to be a fit.

Thank you for the clarification, it's a long shot but hopefully they can beat Australia and Dellavedova and position themselves to advance. Is there any information in the video that us Gonzaga fans would be interested in knowing?
