SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Gonzaga's freshman third baseman Ernie Yake posted a five-hit day and led GU to a 13-3 win on the road at San Diego on Friday night.

The Zags (23-19, 13-9) put the game out of reach early against the Toreros (20-26, 9-13), posting five runs in the second inning, and then piling on eight more to tie their highest-scoring output of the year. GU also posted a season-high 17 hits in the game, led by huge days from Ernie Yake and Nick Brooks.

"Tonight was a big-time effort all around, we were clicking on all cylinders," head coach Mark Machtolf said. "That was a special five-hit night for Ernie Yake. We are looking forward to the opportunity to win a series on the road tomorrow."

Yake had the first five-hit game for a Zag since Sam Brown on April 30, 2017, going 5-for-5 while reaching base six times with three runs and four RBI. Brooks was 3-for-5 with a homer and two doubles along with two RBI and a run scored.

Three more Zags had two hits each in Isaac Barrera, Branson Trube and Jake Vieth. Trube's pair of hits included a two-run homer and a team-high four RBI on the day.

The Zags also got another solid start out of ace Daniel Bies, who went 7.0 innings and scattered 10 hits while giving up just two runs and striking out six with three walks. He forced the Toreros to strand 11 runners during his seven innings. Taylor Davis came on to finish the final two innings for GU, allowing one run and just two hits while striking out one.

The five-run second included Brooks' two-run homer, an RBI double by Barrera and a two-RBI single from Yake. After USD came to within 5-2, the Zags added two runs each in the fourth, sixth, eighth and ninth innings.

In the fourth, Gunnar Schubert had an RBI single, and Yake scored from second after a USD throwing error on a ball put in play by Trube. Trube then posted the next four with a two-RBI single in the sixth and a two-run homer in the eighth.

Yake finished his day in the top of the ninth when he knocked home a pair with a double down the right field line.

The Zags and Toreros will play the second of a three-game series on Saturday at 5 p.m. at San Diego. Links to live coverage are available on GoZags.com.

Baseball Comes Back for 5-3 Win at USD

Schubert’s 3-RBI double put GU in the lead

May 5, 2018

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Gonzaga baseball rode solid pitching and timely hitting to a 5-3 win at San Diego on Saturday evening in San Diego, Calif.

Freshman starter Alek Jacob overcame two early runs to turn in 5.1 solid innings and Gunnar Schubert put the Zags (24-19, 14-9) in the lead with his bases-loaded, bases-clearing double in the fifth inning to help GU beat the Toreros (20-27, 9-14).

“Today was a great job by the guys of grinding out a win on the road on a day that we didn’t play extremely well,” head coach Mark Machtolf said. “We got a clutch hit from Schubert, and were able to get the ball to [Casey] Legumina with a lead. We are ready to get back out on the diamond tomorrow.”

Gonzaga was outhit 10-5, but two hits apiece from Schubert and Austin Pinorini and four Torero error made all five Zag runs unearned.

On the mound, GU’s bullpen entered in the sixth and didn’t allow a run over the last 3.2 innings. Trent Schulte earned two outs to get out of the sixth, Calvin LeBrun faced one batter in the seventh and Casey Legumina earned his league-leading 12th save of the year by pitching the final 3.0 innings. He struck out five and allowed just two hits.

San Diego took the lead with two runs off Jacob in the opening inning and kept the Zags off the board until the fourth when a throwing error allowed Schubert to scamper home. The GU shortstop then had his big hit to give the Zags a 4-2 lead in the sixth.

After a USD run pulled the score to 4-3, Gonzaga got another in the top of the sixth when Pinorini came in from third on a wild pitch.

The Zags and Toreros will play the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m. at San Diego. Links to live coverage are available on GoZags.com.

Baseball Takes Extra-Inning Loss at USD, 5-4

GU’s four-run seventh erased with two late USD HRs

May 6, 2018

Box Score (http://www.gozags.com/sports/m-basebl/stats/2017-2018/gon44.html)

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Gonzaga baseball took a 4-1 lead into the ninth, but San Diego found its power with the tying and winning runs coming off homers in the series final on Sunday in San Diego, Calif.

GU (24-20, 14-10) posted a four-run seventh inning to erase a 1-0 deficit and headed to the ninth inning where a three-run pinch hit homer by the Toreros tied it. USD (21-27, 10-14) then added a solo shot in the bottom of the 11th to take the win.

“We gave ourselves every chance to sweep this weekend and just couldn’t finish today,” head coach Mark Machtolf said. “We needed a big series win on the road and we accomplished that. We are proud of our effort this weekend and now get to head home to finish up finals and our last two homestands.”

Lefty starter Mac Lardner pitched well for the Zags, going 6.0 innings and allowing just one run on six hits with three strikeouts and three walks.

On offense, Isaac Barrera and Ernie Yake had two hits, an RBI and a run scored each, while Gunnar Schubert had two RBI, a hit and reached two more times on walks.

The starting pitchers traded zeroes in the scoring column through the first 5.5 innings before USD got on the board with a solo homer off Lardner in the sixth. But, the Zags answered right back in the top of the seventh with a big inning.

Barrera and Yake hit back-to-back RBI singles to grab the lead 2-1, and then Schubert knocked home a pair with a single through the left side. GU had five hits in the inning on the way to a 4-1 lead.

After the GU bullpen worked through jams in the seventh and eighth, the Toreros got to Legumina in the ninth with a pinch-hit three-run homer to force extra innings.

Gonzaga will play its final non-conference games of the season next weekend at home against New Mexico State in a three-game series beginning Friday at 6 p.m. Live coverage will be available at GoZags.com.
