STANFORD, Calif. Gonzaga baseball put a runner on with one out in the ninth, but was unable to tie the score in a 4-3 loss at third-ranked Stanford on Monday in Stanford, Calif.

Gonzaga (13-13) took the lead on two separate occasions, but each time the Cardinal (21-3) had the answer before taking the lead for good in the seventh.

Taylor Davis got the spot start for the Zags and was solid, going 6.1 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Calvin LeBrun finished the seventh and eighth for GU allowing no runs on two hits.

The Zags got the scoring started in the first inning off of Stanford starter Austin Weiermiller with back-to-back doubles by Trube and Vieth, allowing Trube to score.

Stanford tied it at 1-1 in the second before Trube got the inning started again. He singled, moved to second when Vieth was hit by a pitch and then to third on a wild pitch, before scoring on an RBI groundout by Schubert.

The Zags answered with a solo home run by Vieth in the top of the fifth, but a two-run Cardinal homer tied it back up at 3-3 in the bottom half of the inning.

Stanford added the deciding run on a two-out RBI single in the seventh before holding the GU offense scoreless in the final two innings. Nick Brooks hit a one-out, pinch-hit double in the ninth but was stranded on second.
