Gaels have literally 10’s of fans hollering in support of their team. Kidding aside, the Gaels offense looks very well oiled...like Randy’s scalp. That’s not fair because Randy complaining to the refs in the NIT game seems cute rather than irritating like usual. BTW Gaels up 41-35 at half.

This just in - Randy apparently chewing Benadryl on the bench because of a violent rash caused by having a PAC 12 team playing in his gym.

So SMC on the way towards a second win in NIT ... so this is awesome. That means WCC will split all that post season money amongst the rest of the teams just like they do with money earned by GU for NCAA wins.

Londale with 4 fouls most of 2nd half.

As a result, SMC cannot defend Dickerson in the paint. To be fair, not many can...

I thought SMC actually did very well earlier (even extending the lead) with Jock on the bench, but these last few series they've struggled. Plus, they get themselves into the corners at half court and shoot themselves in the foot.

They were up quite a bit before the late uw run. The spread was 10 so they didn’t cover but a win is a win.

Survive and play on, I guess.

Tough year for the PAC? I don’t pay too much attention to the conference worship, but from what I heard it wasn’t a good year for the PAC, considering they are one of the P5 conferences.

Down goes USC. I think they play in the Pac12 and were perhaps better than the 6th place team SMC just beat? Not sure. USC lost at home to a team from Confernce USA. The name gives it away, but Conference USA is also a conference.

Wow, that was a terrible ending for usc.
They’re down 2 with 33 seconds left, Huck up a garbage - airball.
Then they don’t foul the wku player with multiple chances. WKU gets an uncontested dunk with 10 seconds left.
Game over.

UW with a terrible job exploiting the slow and unathletic Gaels defenders. I'm honestly surprised that Hopkins didn't better emulate BYU, SF, and Pepperdine's ability to outplay Saint Mary's.

Nowell or Crisp should have been driving and moving the whole game, but I saw a lot of standing around and shots in isolation, which totally eliminated the UW speed and verticality advantage. A Nate Robinson or Isaiah Thomas type player (even if much less skilled) would have run circles around Naar and Krebs.

Ford is SMC's best athlete and shot creator, but I think he's looking at a tough season ahead, with a weaker supporting cast. He's the kind of player that I can't help but root for.

It did bother me to hear the announcers describing Saint Mary's as a team that was unfairly left out of the NCAA tourney because they are "right up in there in the WCC with the sweet-16 Zags" -- leaving aside whether or not SMC deserved an at-large bid, there's not much (RPI, Kenpom, OOC, conference tourney) indicating that they were anywhere near as good as Gonzaga this year, despite the single flukey 3pt win they had. It's lazy announcing to decide that the WCC is [Gonzaga, SMC, ------------ Everyone else]. This year I think SMC was more similar to BYU and San Diego and SF. [Zags --------- SMC,BYU,SF,SD--------- Everyone else]

You get five units for making the Semi-final... each unit is worth $5220 as of 2016.

Teams also get 15 percent of the net gate from any home games in the opening three rounds.

Yeah, I was just being a smart a**. Many on this board spend a good portion of the season bashing the Gaels (not all, they have some GU fans singing their praises), but during the post season SMC suddenly becomes the best thing since sliced bread. It's just odd to me. SMC probably will beat Utah. If these games were in Seattle or SLC, very good chance of a different outcome. But good for SMC they earned a high seed in the NIT so they get all home games. Still, SMC lost to Washington St. in OOC on a neutral court. I'm not gonna forget about that one.

Two big factors in the NIT. Home court matters, although some road teams win. Even bigger is motivation. Some teams don't recover from missing the NCAA Tournament and don't give a damn about playing in the NIT. Happens every year. Other teams see it as an opportunity to play more games and build momentum for next year. The teams lacking motivation don't advance very far, if at all.

U Zig, I Zag
03-20-2018, 04:21 PM
I guess some teams have players sitting out, so they don’t get hurt like CFB players do in lesser bowl games.

I think it’s natural to root for your conference brethren after the season has ended. I am not a big ‘conference guy’, but I get it. The opposite affect is what the PAC is probably dealing with. Walton included - when its conference, conference, conference and then the conference flames out early (or goes 1-6 in bowl games), people will call it out.

Personally, I am impressed that the WCC has kept winning in the post season for the most part.
