WEEKLY RECAP

- After winning the final game of a set at UC Irvine and all three in Sacramento - two vs. Sac State, one vs. Milwaukee - Gonzaga is on a four-game win streak heading into the series at Rice.
- Daniel Bies threw a complete game in a 4-1 win over Milwaukee, giving up just six hits, one run and striking out a career-high eight Panthers.
- Freshman Alek Jacob then put together an 11-strikeout performance against Sac State over 7.0 innings of one-run ball (unearned) and just two hits.
- The Zags relied on timely hitting and a staff effort to complete the weekend sweep. Mac Lardner (4.2), Taylor Davis (2.0), Calvin LeBrun (0.1) and Casey Legumina (2.0) combined to give up just three runs and strike out nine batters against Sac State on Monday.

ZAGS FACE RICE FOR FIRST TIME EVER

- Meeting for the first time in program history, Gonzaga and Rice will play a four-game set over three days in Houston, Texas.

OFFENSE:

- In three games last weekend, the Gonzaga offense combined to hit .352 as a team with a .421 on base percentage. The Zags had nine extra-base hits in that three-game span.
- 1B Jake Vieth continued his hot start to the season, going 5-for-9 with three walks and a hit-by-pitch, reaching base at a .692 clip over the course of three games.
- Vieth continues to lead the team in average (.382), doubles (4), home runs (2), RBI (8), slugging (.676) and on base percentage (.511). His OPS equates to an 1.187 clip, and he’s on a streak of nine straight games reaching base.
- SS Gunnar Schubert enters the weekend with a current on-base streak of 10 games, reaching in every game this season. He has at least one hit in eight of the 10 games, and has reached via walk or HBP in the other two.
- Schubert is also on a four-game hit streak and has collected multiple hits in a game four times this year.
- Redshirt freshman 3B Ernie Yake broke out in a huge way to start the season, going 4-for-6 in his collegiate debut against Cal Poly on Feb. 16. That’s Gonzaga’s only four-hit game on the season, and one of four games in which Yake has multiple hits. He went 6-for-14 last weekend with three RBI.
- Both Yake and Vieth have done a great job of keeping innings alive, each going 5-for-10 (.500) on the season when batting with two outs. Vieth has four two-out RBI and Yake has two.
- CF Branson Trube put together a great weekend at the plate in three games in Sacramento, going 6-for-12 with a pair of doubles, three runs scored and two RBI.
- C Austin Pinorini collected his first home run as a Zag, helping GU beat Sac State 6-3. His third-inning, two-run shot pulled GU out of a 2-0 hole to tie the score.
- Gonzaga pinch hitters are 4-for-7 (.571) on the season, lead by a 2-for-2 line from Nick Nyquist and one hit each from Isaac Barrera and Nick Brooks.

DEFENSE:

- The Gonzaga defense turned seven double plays in four games over the opening weekend. Along with four more over the last two weeks, GU now has a WCC-best 11 on the year, which also ranks 49th in the nation.
- Gonzaga’s .983 fielding percentage is also second in the WCC and ranks 14th nationally.

PITCHING:

- In three games last weekend, the GU staff combined for a 2.00 ERA and struck out 29 batters against just three walks. They held opponents to just a .211 average on the weekend.
- RHP Daniel Bies broke a career-high for strikeouts for the second straight game and collected his first-career complete game in a 4-1 win over Milwaukee.
- Freshman RHP Alek Jacob struck out a team-high 11 over 7.0 innings against Sac State in the second half of a doubleheader following Bies’ complete-game performance.
- GU pitchers have held opponents to just a .223 batting average with two outs, including a .105 mark (2-for-19) from Jacob.
- The Gonzaga bullpen has collected four victories and three saves on the season. Casey Legumina has two of those saves, including a three-strikeout ninth against New Mexico and a 2.0-inning save last weekend against Sac State to wrap the weekend.
- The GU staff has a 2.97 ERA on the year and has combined for 88 strikeouts in 88.0 innings against just 32 walks.

Baseball Holds Off Rice, 7-5, in Series Opener

Pinorini had two hits with a home (run), and Schubert added three hits

March 9, 2018

Box Score (hthttp://www.gozags.com/sports/m-basebl/stats/2017-2018/gon11.htmlp://)

HOUSTON — Gonzaga baseball put together a big inning early on offense and then held off a Rice rally down the stretch to win the opener of a four-game set on Friday night in Houston, Texas.

Gonzaga(7-4) scored four runs in the third, and built a 7-3 lead heading to the bottom of the seventh, but Rice (6-8) wouldn’t go away quietly, scoring one in the seventh and one in the eighth to pull within two. The Owls put the tying run at the plate in the ninth, but Casey Legumina closed the door for his third save of the season.

Gunnar Schubert and Austin Pinorini led the offense with big days. Schubert went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while Pinorini had two hits, including his second home run of the season. Schubert extended his hit streak to five games and his on-base streak to 11 games.

Three more Zags had multiple hits in the game with Daniel Fredrickson, Branson Trube and Carson Breshears collecting two each. GU did most of its damage against Rice starter Matt Canterino, who entered the game with 36 strikeouts in 25.0 innings on the year. GU roughed up Canterino for six runs on nine hits in 5.2 innings, even though he struck out nine Zags.

GU’s Taylor Davis made his first-career start as a Zag after appearing in relief this season. He went 4.0 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits with three strikeouts. Calvin LeBrun got the win in relief, going 4.0 innings of two-run ball with five strikeouts before giving way to the closer Legumina for the ninth.

“It was an outstanding effort offensively against one of the premier Friday night arms in the country in Matt Canterino,” head coach Mark Machtolf said. “We played good team defense and had good outings from Davis and LeBrun, and Legumina came in and shut the door. We need to bring that same energy and focus into tomorrow’s doubleheader.”

In that big third inning, GU got RBI singles from Jace VanDeBrake and Breshears, an RBI double by Pinorini and an RBI triple from Trube.

GU added a single run in the fifth, sixth and seventh. Pinorini’s homer came in the fifth, Yake had a sacrifice fly in the sixth and Schubert doubled down the right field line to cap the scoring for the Zags in the seventh.

Gonzaga continues its four-game series at Rice with a doubleheader on Saturday at Reckling Park at Noon PT/2 p.m. CT. Live coverage links are available on the baseball schedule page at GoZags.com.

Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Rice

Branson Trube went a combined 6-for-8 on the day

HOUSTON — Gonzaga baseball split a doubleheader at Rice, taking the first game 7-5 and falling in the second 6-1, on Saturday in Houston, Texas.

The split snaps Gonzaga’s six-game winning streak and moves the Zags’ record to 8-5 on the season. Rice moved to 7-8 after the win in the second game.

GU leads the four-game series with Rice 2-1 with the final game on Sunday at Reckling Park at 11 a.m. PT/1 p.m. CT. Live coverage links are available on the baseball schedule page at GoZags.com.

GAME 1: Gonzaga 7, Rice 5

Much like Friday night, the Zags built a lead and then held off a late Rice rally to win by an identical score of 7-5. Up 7-4 heading into the ninth, Rice loaded the bases with nobody out, but closer Casey Legumina induced a double-play that allowed a run to score. He then got the last batter to bounce up the middle where Carson Breshears made a diving stop and threw out the runner at first to end it.

On the mound, starter Daniel Bies continued his great start to the season, going 7.0 innings, giving up just three runs on six hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Justin Blatner pitched the eighth giving up one run on one hit with a strikeout and a walk, before giving way to Legumina for the ninth for his third save.

Branson Trube was spectacular on offense, going 4-for-5 with two RBI, one run scored and two stolen bases. It was GU’s second four-hit game of the year – Yake had the other in the season opener – and first game where a GU player had two stolen bases.

Gunnar Schubert collected two hits to move his hit streak to six games and his on-base streak to 12 games. He also scored twice and knocked in a run. Jake Vieth and Ernie Yake each collected two hits and an RBI on the day.

The Zags got on the board first with three runs in the visitor half of the second inning, only to be answered by three from Rice in the bottom half. It was RBI singles from Nyquist and Yake, and a bases-loaded walk by Vieth.

After a couple scoreless at-bats, GU grabbed the lead back with an RBI fielder’s choice from Gunnar Schubert and a single from Branson Trube that knocked home a run.

The Zags added one more insurance run in the seventh with a sacrifice fly by Nyquist for his second RBI of the day, and again in the ninth on an RBI double from Trube.

GAME 2: Gonzaga 1, Rice 6

The Zags got on the board first in the top of the opening inning, but three runs from Rice in the third and one more in the fifth was enough to give the Owls a solid cushion in the seven-inning affair.

Trube continued his hot day with two more hits and Alek Jacob pitched all 6.0 innings on the mound for the Zags. He gave up six runs on seven hits, while striking out seven and walking three.

GU loaded the bases in the first inning, but managed just an RBI groundout for its 1-0 lead.

After not allowing a hit in the first two innings, Jacob was struck for three runs in the third inning by the Rice offense. The Owls collected three of their seven hits on the day in the frame.

GU put two runners on in the seventh with one out after singles by Nyquist and Johnston, but a pair of strikeouts ended the threat.

Baseball Takes Rice Series with 10-2 Win

Yake had three hits and Trube had four RBI in win

March 11, 2018

HOUSTON — Gonzaga baseball took the series at Rice with a 10-2 win on Sunday afternoon at Reckling Park in Houston, Texas. The Zags beat the Owls three times in the four-game series.

Gonzaga bounced back from a loss in the second half of a doubleheader last night with a great start out of Mac Lardner and an offensive outburst led by four RBI from Branson Trube and three hits from Ernie Yake.

“We had a lot of quality at-bats, good pitching performances and solid defense today, and all weekend, to win a series at a national-power program,” head coach Mark Machtolf said. “It is a great weekend for us to build on and prepare for two good midweek challenges with Oregon and Seattle.”

Along with Yake’s three hits and Trube’s two, Jace VanDeBrake and Gunnar Schubert each added two hits in the game. Schubert’s first hit pushed his on-base streak to all 13 games this year and his hit streak to seven games.

After giving up one run in the first, the Zags responded with five in the second, which was all they would need behind Lardner’s start. He went 7.0 innings, giving up just one run on seven hits with one strikeout and two walks. Calvin LeBrun entered in a jam in the eighth and struck out the side to end a serious Rice threat.

In that second inning, the Zags tied it on an RBI fielder’s choice off the bat of Daniel Fredrickson, but broke it open with a two-RBI single from Yake and a two-RBI double from Branson Trube.

Trube wasn’t done there as he hit a two-run homer in the sixth to give him a career-high four RBI on the day. Jace VanDeBrake added his first home run of the year in the seventh and Nick Brooks hit an RBI double in the top of the ninth.

Gonzaga is back on the road on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. GU faces Oregon at 6 p.m. on Tuesday and Seattle U at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
