- Due to recent and projected winter weather in Spokane, Gonzaga baseball cancelled its weekend home series and will travel to Sacramento, Calif., for a round-robin tournament with Milwaukee and host Sacramento State on Sunday and Monday.
- GU will play Milwaukee in the first game of a doubleheader and Sacramento State in the nightcap on Sunday. The Zags and Hornets will then wrap up the week on Monday at Noon. Milwaukee and Sac State will also play on Saturday night.

- Gonzaga went 1-2 in its three-game series at UC Irvine last weekend, winning game three of the series.
- In the win, GU came back from down a run in the top of the ninth inning with a sac fly from Daniel Fredrickson and then a 2-RBI single from Troy Johnston to give GU the lead 5-3. Casey Legumina then shut down the Anteaters in the home half of the ninth to complete the win.

- DH Troy Johnston is hitting .400 (4-for-10) with runners in scoring position on the season. After going 1-for-5 to start the season, he has three hits in his last five at-bats with RISP. That includes his ninth-inning, game-winning, two-RBI single against UC Irvine last Sunday.
- SS Gunnar Schubert enters the weekend with a current on-base streak of seven games, reaching in every game this season. He has at least one hit in five games, and has reached via walk or HBP in the other two.
- 1B Jake Vieth leads the team in hits (8), doubles (3), walks (6), RBI (5) and batting average (.320).
- Vieth collected three hits and fell just a triple short of the cycle in a win over New Mexico. He’s riding a three-game hit streak into the UCI series and has four extra-base hits in four games (1 HR, 3 2Bs).
- Redshirt freshman 3B Ernie Yake broke out in a huge way to start the season, going 4-for-6 in his collegiate debut against Cal Poly on Feb. 16. He had a double, three singles and scored twice.
- CF Branson Trube blasted the first home run of his Zag career against Cal Poly in the final game of the tournament. The homer put GU ahead 5-4 in the sixth and the bullpen kept the score that way for the win.

- The Gonzaga defense turned seven double plays in four games over the opening weekend. Along with two more against UC Irvine, GU now has a WCC-leading nine on the year, which also ranks 17th in the nation.
- Gonzaga’s .980 fielding percentage is also fourth in the WCC and ranks 57th nationally.

- RHP Daniel Bies broke a career-high for strikeouts with seven against just one walk in 6.0 innings in his first start of the year, then equaled those numbers against UC Irvine last weekend.
- Freshman RHP Alek Jacob went 5.1 innings in his collegiate debut with five strikeouts, followed that up with 6.0 innings against UC Irvine where he gave up just one earned run on five hits, while striking out four.
- The Gonzaga bullpen has collected all three victories on the season, along with a pair of saves during the opening weekend. Each save was recorded with a perfect ninth inning. Casey Legumina struck out three New Mexico batters on Sunday for his second-career save, and Michael Spellacy cruised through a clean inning against Cal Poly for his first career save.
- The GU staff has a 3.39 ERA on the year and has combined for 59 strikeouts in 61.0 innings.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Gonzaga baseball dominated on the mound in both ends of a doubleheader to defeat Milwaukee and Sacramento State on Sunday in Sacramento, Calif.

The two GU starting pitchers, Daniel Bies and Alek Jacob, combined to pitch 16.0 innings, giving up just two runs on eight total hits, while striking out a total of 19 batters and walking just one. At the plate, GU's Ernie Yake went a combined 5-for-10 with three runs scored and two RBI, while Branson Trube went 4-for-7 with a walk, two doubles, three runs scored and an RBI.

The win moves GU to 5-4 on the season, while Milwaukee dropped to 2-6 and Sac State dropped to 4-6 on the year.

Gonzaga will face Sacramento State on Monday at Noon to wrap up the weekend. Check the baseball schedule page on GoZags.com for available links to live stats.

GAME 1: Gonzaga 4, Milwaukee 1

The Zags got a complete-game performance out of starting pitcher Daniel Bies on the way to a 4-1 win over Milwaukee in the opening game of the doubleheader.

Bies went 9.0 innings and struck out a career-high eight batters while giving up just six hits and one run without zero walks.

At the plate, Ernie Yake collected three hits with a run scored and an RBI, while Austin Pinorini and Jace VanDeBrake each notched two hits.

Milwaukee got on the board first with a solo homer in the second inning, but GU answered in a big way in the third inning, collecting all four runs.

In that third inning, Carson Breshears walked and Trube singled to set the table for the Zags. Yake knocked home Breshears with a single, and then Troy Johnston scored Trube on a sacrifice fly to give GU the lead. The Zags weren't done yet, as Jake Vieth and Pinorini each added two-out RBI singles to cap the scoring.

From there it was all Bies. He allowed just three hits the rest of the way, and not more than one in any given inning to keep the Panther attack from getting going.

GAME 2: Gonzaga 13, Sac State 3

GU's second game went much like the first with dominant pitching, to go along with a major breakout on offense. This time it was freshman starter Alek Jacob that tossed a gem, striking out 11 in 7.0 innings of work, while giving up just one run on two hits and walking just one.

The Zags got on the board first, and built an eight-run lead before the Hornets could get anything going on offense. Jacob struck out five of the first six batters he faced on the day.

Trube went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and an RBI. Vieth, Yake, Johnston and Schubert all collected two hits each.

Johnston scored on a wild pitch in the first, Gunnar Schubert knocked home two with a double in the third and Jake Vieth doubled Yake home in the fourth for a 4-0 GU lead. The Zags added one more in the sixth on a double steal attempt that scored Johnston from third and three more in the seventh to put the game away. Trube had an RBI double, Yake brought home a run with a groundout and pinch hitter Isaac Barrera singled home Trube to complete the damage for the inning.

Gonzaga added one more in the eighth, and then piled on four in the ninth with Patrick Chung scoring on an error, Barrera notching his second RBI with a groundout, pinch hitter Nick Brooks driving home one with a single and Nick Nyquist collecting an RBI on a sacrifice fly.

Michael Spellacy came in to relieve Jacob to start the eighth and pitched the final two innings, giving up two runs on two hits and striking out one.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Gonzaga baseball got home runs from Austin Pinorini and Jake Vieth, along with a team effort from the pitching staff, to grab a 6-3 win at Sacramento State on Monday.

Wrapping a weekend that was originally scheduled for Spokane, the Zags made the most of their location and opponent change, winning all three games in Sacramento. Two wins came against host Sac State and one came against original home opponent Milwaukee.

The win was GU’s fourth in a row (6-4) and featured four different Zags with at least two hits along with 5.1 innings of one-run ball from the bullpen. Second baseman Carson Breshears went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Vieth, Gunnar Schubert and Branson Trube each collected two hits.

“It was a good collective effort to sweep a series on the road,” head coach Mark Machtolf said. “Pinorini and Vieth both had big blasts, but I thought both Trube and Schubert had big-time team at-bats that scored runs. On the mound, we were able to keep us in the game all day and make some big pitches. It’s nice to fly home with a win.”

On the mound, starter Mac Lardner went 4.2 innings, giving up just two runs on three hits with four strikeouts and one walk. From there the bullpen took over with Taylor Davis going 2.0 innings and collecting four strikeouts, Calvin LeBrun getting GU out of a jam with an out to end the seventh and Casey Legumina going the final 2.0 innings without allowing a run.

Sac State took a 2-0 lead through the second, but Pinorini came up with a runner on and promptly tied the score with a homer in the third. The Hornets answered in the bottom of the sixth with a run, but GU was right there in the next half inning to take control of the game.

In the seventh, the Zags scored three, getting an RBI double from Jace VanDeBrake, an RBI infield single by Schubert and an RBI groundout from Trube.

Vieth capped the scoring in the top of the ninth with his second home run of the season, a solo shot to right-center.

The Zags continue what is now a 16-game road swing to start the season in Houston, Texas, where they will face Rice for four games. The Zags and Owls will start the series on March 9th at 4:30 p.m. PT.
