- The Zags fell to Cal Poly and No. 2 Oregon State to open, then defeated Mountain West Conference favorite New Mexico and Cal Poly in a rematch to end the week.
- GU pounded out 16 hits in the loss to Cal Poly, which had six Zags collect at least two hits apiece.

- Redshirt freshman 3B Ernie Yake broke out in a huge way, going 4-for-6 in his collegiate debut against Cal Poly on Feb. 16. He had a double, three singles and scored twice.
- Yake also added a two-RBI game against New Mexico, in which each of his RBI broke a tie at the time.
- 1B Jake Vieth collected three hits and fell just a triple short of the cycle in a win over New Mexico. He’s riding a three-game hit streak into the UCI series and has four extra-base hits in four games (1 HR, 3 2Bs).
- LF Jace VanDeBrake collected hits in three of the first four games with a pair in each of the first two. - 2B Carson Breshears, whose older brother Dustin played shortstop for GU in 2015-16, collected at least one hit in all four of GU’s games last weekend.
- RF Daniel Fredrickson reached base five times in GU’s season-opening game, going 3-for-4 with two BBs. - CF Branson Trube blasted the first home run of his Zag career against Cal Poly in the final game of the tournament. The homer put GU ahead 5-4 in the sixth and the bullpen kept the score that way for the win.
- C Austin Pinorini was the most patient Zag of the weekend, walking five times in four games. Those five walks rank him first in the West Coast Conference and 31st nationally.

- The Gonzaga defense turned seven double plays in four games over the weekend. Those seven DPs rank them first in the West Coast Conference and seventh nationally through the first weekend.
- Gonzaga’s .987 fielding percentage is also first in the WCC and ranks 39th nationally.

- Gonzaga’s first three starters on the weekend either tied or broke career-highs for innings pitched, while Bies broke a career-high for strikeouts with seven against just one walk in 6.0 innings.
- Mac Lardner went a career-high 6.2 innings against the No. 2 team in the nation, Oregon State. He held the Beavers’ potent offense to just two earned runs on five hits.
- Freshman RHP Alek Jacob went 5.1 innings in his collegiate debut with five strikeouts. He combined with Calvin LeBrun and Casey Legumina to strike out 12 New Mexico batters.
- The Gonzaga bullpen collected both victories and both saves on the weekend. Each save was recorded with a perfect ninth inning. Casey Legumina struck out three New Mexico batters on Sunday for his second-career save, and Michael Spellacy cruised through a clean inning against Cal Poly for his first career save.
- GU starters combined for a 3.12 ERA in GU’s four games, allowing seven earned runs in 20.2 innings.
- The bullpen notched a 2.98 ERA on the weekend, allowing five earned runs in 15.1 innings.

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Gonzaga's baseball team fell to UC Irvine in the second game of a three-game set on Saturday, 6-1, in Irvine, Calif.

The Anteaters (5-1) got on the board early with three in the first, and GU (2-4) wasn't able to break through until a run in the ninth.

"It was not our best effort today in all three facets of the game, we didn't play very well," head coach Mark Machtolf said. "We have a big opportunity tomorrow to come out and salvage a win in the series."

Gonzaga starter Mac Lardner put together a solid outing, going six innings and giving up four earned runs on nine hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Keaton Kneuppel pitched a scoreless seventh in relief.

Austin Pinorini collected his first-career triple as a Zag in the top of the first inning, but was stranded on third. GU threatened again in the eighth inning after Carson Breshears singled and reached second on a wild pitch, but the rally was halted without a run.

The Zags got their lone run in the ninth. Nick Nyquist collected his first hit of the season with a pinch-hit double and came home on a one-out single from Jake Vieth.

The Zags will wrap up the series at UC Irvine on Sunday at 1 p.m. Live stats will be available on the baseball schedule page at GoZags.com.

Baseball Rallies in Ninth to Beat UC Irvine, 5-3

The Zags got a go-ahead two-RBI single from Johnston to win

Feb. 25, 2018

Box Score (http://www.gozags.com/sports/m-basebl/stats/2017-2018/gon07.html)

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Down 3-2 heading into the ninth, Gonzaga baseball put together a three-run rally to beat UC Irvine on the road on Sunday afternoon.

Gonzaga went down by a run after the Anteaters scored two in the bottom of the eighth, but the Zags promptly responded by putting two of the first three batters on base via walks. After a single by Austin Pinorini to load the bases, Daniel Fredrickson tied it with a sacrifice fly and Troy Johnston put GU in the lead with a clutch single that scored both Pinorini and pinch runner Isaac Barrera.

"That was a big win that we needed today," head coach Mark Machtolf said. "Alek Jacob had another great outing on the mind and kept us in it all day. I was happy to see us answer a punch in the bottom of the eighth with quality at-bats fueling the comeback win in the ninth."

The Zags got a quality start out of Alek Jacob on the mound. The freshman went 6.0 innings and gave up just one run on five hits while striking out four and walking just one. Casey Legumina picked up the win, cleaning up the ninth inning after he had allowed UCI's eighth-inning runs. He went 2.1 innings, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out four. Calvin LeBrun and Taylor Davis each retired their only batters faced of the day in the seventh before giving way to Legumina.

At the plate, Johnston had a huge day, going 3-for-5 with three RBI, including the two in the ninth to give GU the deciding cushion. Pinorini had a pair of hits in his first time in the leadoff spot, while Fredrickson was 1-for-3 and had two RBI.

Down 1-0 after two innings, Gonzaga scored one in the third on an RBI single from Fredrickson and one more in the fifth on an RBI single from Johnston to set the stage for the late-inning performance.

GU will return home after playing the first seven games of the season away from Spokane, Wash. The Zags will host Milwaukee this weekend for a three-game series beginning Friday. Stay tuned to GoZags.com throughout the week for updates and news ahead of the Milwaukee series.
