I decided to make this list mostly out of boredom, but also seeing some incorrect info regarding recruits and rankings. I created a "profile" for the more noteworthy players on the current Zags' roster, as well as for some of the future Zag commits.

Some info to keep in mind:

247 Composite takes all rankings into account for Scout/247, ESPN, and Rivals and averages them out. This, in my opinion, is the closest to a true "ranking" as it gets
Scout and 247 merged about a year ago. Their combined rankings are the "Scout/247" ranking, and have kept some of the better evaluators in the business, IMO, in Josh Gershon, Evan Daniels, and Jerry Meyer
When Perkins first commited to Gonzaga, he was ranked across the board in the low 20s to low 30s, making him both a 4* and 5* recruit on different sites. It was after his senior year at Huntington Prep where his final ranking dropped into the 60s.

For upcoming recruits who have signed or given their verbal commitment, it's important to keep in mind that Scout/247 are the only site to rank into 2020, and they also do a good job of keeping up to speed with international recruits. As profiles are created for the Zags in future classes, I'll make sure to update this post.

Thanks. Appreciate the hard work/effort you put into this (knowing it's been a "labor of love").

Was wondering if you'd used this composite site to help source the info .... https://sites.google.com/site/rscihoops/home

Very cool site! Would've helped a lot with compiling the listings, but unfortunately this is the first time I'm seeing it. Thanks for sharing

That's a fun site. 2005 was a great year for Seattle hoops.

And thanks for compiling DagsZags

I find it interesting to see where "our" kids ranked in relationship to others in their recruiting classes .....

In the meantime, here's another "tip o' the cap" to you for the work you put into this. Thanks again.

Zach collins was highest ranked ever

Austin Daye was actually ranked at #25 in his class by rivals.com. He is technically the highest ranked GU recruit ever by one service. Even higher than Zach Collins.....although I suppose you need to factor in that Zach was a McDonald's AA. Matt Bouldin was in the low 40's with rivals.com and in the 50's and 60's most other places if I recall. Steven Gray was #64 I think with rivals.com, Gary Bell in the 80's.....I realize these are older players.

I know people realize this, but you can pretty much toss the rankings out the window when it comes to the overseas recruits. Few and Tommy have seen those kids play 12x more than any American prep talent scout like Jerry Meyer. This includes Filip, who was scouted for what he did overseas........not for what he has done on an all star team in Florida. It is obvious that a guy like Karnowski would have been a top 50 player if he played high school ball in Portland, OR. I mean, as soon as he touched ground in America Duke and Kansas were wanting him to visit. Sabonis would've been a McDonald's AA for certain.

Of course Josh Heytvelt was the most sought after GU recruit ever, and he was not even in the top 100 with some people. Really, when it comes down to it, when I see Mike Brey at Notre Dame and Tony Bennett at Virginia as GU's main competition for Corey Kispert, I could care less if he is unranked at ESPN.

It is interesting, though, how the various services can be so different when ranking the same player. Could it be a function of how many times they've actually seen the guy play??

Zach Collins is Gonzaga's highest rated recruit per Scout/247, coming in at a national ranking of #20 (5*), though his 247 Composite ranking is 30 due to ESPN having him in the low 30s. https://247sports.com/Player/Zach-Collins-58868/high-school-102443

Rivals also had Collins at a national ranking of #21, 5* https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/2016/zach-collins-480

As to your second point, I think you hit the nail on the head when it comes to where and when and how many times a scout has seen a certain player play, and whether they over or underperformed.

THANKS FOR ALL THE WORK ON THIS PAGE - very interesting!

Secondly, I remember seeing Josh ranked (ESPN) in the 40's before he committed to GU. I also recall other GU recruits that dropped in the rankings after committing/signing to/with GU!

I am guessing of course but it seems the people that do the ranking of players, somehow feel that maybe they had them over-ranked because they committed to GU.

Did anyone else notice Josh's drop in the rankings?

Of course! I enjoy recruiting and rankings and all that, it's always been really interesting to me.

I do remember a time a few years ago where players seemed to drop in the rankings once committing to Gonzaga, but it seems the opposite is true now. Recruits seem to rise in the rankings once they commit to the Zags now, escpecially the big men. Petrusev is a good example, as he's just continued climbing since committing.

As for Josh, I mentioned it in the original post, but when he committed to Gonzaga he very high 4*/low end 5* scattered across the different sites. I believe he committed in his Junior year, while still playing in Colorado. It was when he transferred for his Senior year to Huntington Prep where he started to drop in rankings, but, in my opinion, the drop had a lot to do with playing on a team of High Major D1 talent on his team (not enough shots to go around) rather than his committing to play for GU. There's a discussion going on now even about the drop on teh Greg Foster, Jr. thread.

I had no idea that Collins jumped that much in the rankings at the end. Thanks for the information. Last time I checked he was at #34 with ESPN and in the 50's pretty much everywhere else.

Of course now that there isn't a Rivals anymore, it's going to be challenging to find out where they rated players of the past. I tried to pull up Gary Bell's profile:

https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/2011/gary-bell-69418

I watched a few games when Josh played for Huntington Prep. The coach just had him bring the ball up. Didn't even allow him to run offense. And they took no advantage of his shooting skills. As Jerry Krause once said, Josh should have never left Colorado. Josh actually regressed as a player.

OK, this is for sure Out of Bounds but what player in recent Zag history (2000 and later) came in the lowest rated and with the lowest expectations but proved to be a critically important player for the team? Who wins the Diamond In The Rough
Award?

Ammo would have to be in there too. I don't think he was a 4* and you wouldn't expect any lower than a 4* for POY.

That's a great list.
