    Gollum and his Precious!

Not to look past Pacific but Saturday's game will once more give Gollum and his Dark Hoard from Moronga a chance to utilize his greatest weapon....his precious..

    What is that you ask?

The never ending moving screen....watching SMC's pick and roll is like watching dance steps performed to perfection as the dribbler follows the movement of the screener staying shielded by his body as he moves closer to the basket before breaking to the hoop. Sometime the screener will take 3 to 4 steps as the dribbler weaves behind him.....and it is completely ignored by officials as the timing and tempo make it seem innocent except they do it over and over....at least that is what this basketball fan sees...What do you think?

    Just my opinion...

    Go!! Zags!!!

    Section 35 Screens

Article 4. No player, while moving, shall set a screen that CAUSES CONTACT and delays an opponent from reaching a desired position.

my understanding is ....contact must be made to call moving screen...

So, can the defensive player clandestinely make contact to force a ref's moving screen foul call? If so, we should use it to the max Saturday!

YES! Go inside the screen...and flop.

A good 3-point shooting team solves this. Same with a transition game. Can't take all that time off the clock when you're getting boat-raced.

            Keys for tonight:

*DRIBBLE-DRIVE PENETRATION* - doesn't matter if the drive is contested. Have to keep at it.

            1. Establish that it will be a consistent effort. If you give up easy or don't commit to it, teams won't take it seriously. That's the first step to keeping them honest.
1a. *Don't stand around*. It can be easy to stop moving and just watch someone that is in a face-up. Even if the dude is ISO'd, help either create space for him to work, away from the ball...or put someone in position for a nice back-cut pass or kick out. Keep running the offense, even in an ISO.
1b. Try to create contact. Whether that be in your ball handling, your footwork, the angles you take, perhaps coming off a screen? Whatever it may be, get the defender to turn his hips and get his weight out from under his center of gravity. Compromise that, and you've got a crucial piece of the puzzle.

            2. Can't have a bad night from 3-point. We don't have as reliable of a deep post entry as in the past. That equals lower efficiency.

            3. The post trap didn't work well against BYU. Don't try to double down on JL, as much. Out-maneuver him with the athleticism in J3, Tillie, and Rui.

            4. Don't try to get out and run until the offense is flowing. Know that things are in sync and shots are falling. Don't want to see us tripping over ourselves and giving the ball away. SMC is going to want to keep the pace slower, so play within that and punish them in the half-court. (See point 1b)

That should be a good start.

Whoops. Guess I still don't consider Pacific a real program, subconsciously.

I always thought that if Randy wasn't such a good basketball coach, he'd be a great offensive line coach. The reason why O-Lineman are generally some of the smartest on the team is - so they say - it's as much technique and smarts as anything, Randy seems to have that technique down.

Tonight's game may set the course for the rest of the season...as you watch the game....look at the Dark Horde on offense....I would like to see how many Zag fans see what I see...that they use a moving screen with their pick and roll...

                      Just my opinion...

Roll under the screen and fall down when the moving screen makes contact. Zag fans in the stands can throw rule books onto the court so the refs will know the rules.
