2020 wing Julian Strawther

"College programs have sure found out about Strawther. He can shoot with range, he's a tall and rangy ball handler and because of that he's gotten offers from Creighton, Oklahoma, Virginia Tech, Gonzaga, DePaul, Florida, Arizona, Washington, Florida State, Oklahoma State, California, UCLA, USC and hometown UNLV."

I used to watch a guy that worked for me. He used to hit on every top level talent that walked through the door. He was routinely turned down but he persisted and occasionally he would get a yes. One of these days, the Zag's staff is going to get a yes from one of these top level kids and the bluebloods will be left holding the bag (of money?).

They are going hard after that point guard from Southern California that is a dynamic score and passer and has a really funky jumpshot.

Nope, 2019. Watson is ranked 50th and Rivet 70th. https://247sports.com/Season/2019-Basketball/RecruitRankings?InstitutionGroup=HighSchool

Dominick Harris is the talented guard from California they seem pretty hard on early.

Apparently they have interest in Julian Strawther https://247sports.com/player/julian-strawther-46035981 but he is a guy who will have a lot of suitors.

I still don't know what evergreen means in reference to a post.

A piece of web content that is "evergreen" is one that is not necessarily timely, it won't become "old news" once the news cycle turns over. The implication here is that GU is always going hard on a SoCal point guard, and though this one refers a specific player, it could have been written about a different player years ago, or years into the future. Not sure how true that is, but that's what is being suggested with the "evergreen tweet" line,

Which is why almost everyone plays on the sneaker circuit. Its how you build your brand. Savvy AAU coaches and handlers put their guys on a pedestal in front of College coaches and NBA scouts at these camps and tournaments.

I thought at the end of the interview he said the "Blue Bloods" (UNC, Duke KU and UK) as the schools he will consider first...it would have been nice for him to have mentioned GU in that sentence but...

I would be willing to bet GU will not get a visit from this young man...just to strong of a "pull" from the east coast

Dickinson plays for Dematha Catholic in Maryland. They always have good teams and produce tons of D-1 players. He is currently ranked at #14 with 247. Some of Dematha's alumni:

Markelle Fultz
Jerami Grant
Jerian Grant
Victor Oladipo
Johnny Sawyer (SCU guard)
Adrian Dantley
Mike Brey (Notre Dame coach)
Adrian Branch (ugh)
Danny Ferry
Joseph Forte

Isaac Johnson is ranked in the 50's. Only one crystal ball prediction with him at 247, and it's Gonzaga. 6-11, 210lbs.

quite the list, thanks. a couple others are backcourt mates Sidney Lowe and Derek Whittenburg from Jimmy V's National Championship team who played for famed high school coach Morgan Wootten at De Matha. Soon as I saw Dematha I thought the same thing. My favorite 30-for-30 of all time. Still watch it when I see it on ESPN. Still can't believe NC State won that game, but was cheering for them throughout the whole tournament.

I broke up with a gal over that game. We had a date that night and asked her if we could reschedule, because I didn't want to miss the game. She said, "Sure." The next night I called and asked her where she would like to go out. She said she couldn't because she was washing her hair. I asked if it was in retaliation for me breaking our date, so I could watch the game and she said, "Yes." I told her okay and never spoke to her again. Great decision. The game was memorable, she wasn't.

Adrian Dantley, Jarrett Jack, and I believe two current players who made the U18 Team USA squad this summer. That program is always stacked; the list of well known DeMatha Catholic HS hoops players goes on and on. I got to work two summers as a coach for Morgan Wooten’s basketball camp in ‘96-‘97; his son Joe hooked me up thanks to the AD at the small school I was teaching at and coaching middle-school hoops team for then: St Anselm’s Abbey School in DC.

Please pardon the thread drift. Summer time ....

To go with this post and Zag_Fanatic, aside from the pipeline that could develop, great players like this don't go somewhere to play by themselves. They are both great players on their own and will make attempts to recruit others to come play with them. This recruit will start an era that will be unforgettable. And that's saying something, considering what's already happened.

Before winnng more than one, let’s try to get back to the FF to win our first!

Schools such as Duke, UK, KU, UCLA etc all have excellent recruiting each year and they have extreme difficulty time getting to the EE let alone winning the whole ball of wax. GU has one FF appearance and it took us 20 years for us to get there. We would all like GU to make it back to the FF and that in itself is an incredible accomplishment.

He said 2 or 3, no? And your boys at Duke east had 3 in 11 years from 91-01. While it didn't happen, your perch on the ledge of righteous indignation isn't nearly so secure as you've led your self to believe.

I took the comment to be more along the lines hyperbole, amyway.

We have the talent to win 2 in the next 5 years if we win it this year and then Tillie and Rui stay for their senior years. We d have exceptional talent this and the next few years. LUCK is always needed though......nobody's a lock for a FF let alone a championship.

Maybe just a little bit, but i definitely think we are growing into a program that can compete for titles with the big boys annually. Whether we win them remains to be seen.

Agreed. We are seeing better and better recruits start looking our way, to go with an amazing coaching staff. I think it's more of a Nova like situation, but Duke is a good comparison as well.

Nova works too. ;)

I just see what Coach K built at Duke, how he took a program on the fringes and made it a blue blood within 30 years. I see Coach Few as being capable of taking the enormous amounts of talent hes cobbling together and doing the same.

MarJon will be attending his 3rd high school in 3 years.

Freshman in 2016-17: Nathan Hale; won National Championship; won 3A state championship vs Garfield; coached by Brandon Roy
Sophomore in 2017-18: Garfield; won 3A state championship vs Rainier Beach; coached by Brandon Roy
Junior in 2018-19: Rainier Beach, will be coached by Mike Bethea

I assume that if he wins a state championship at Rainier Beach, he will play at another high school as a senior at the school he defeats as a junior

I’m sorry I missed your post Maynard G. It’s dizzying to keep track of the talent lately. Since Guru posted about it today I thought the post might be of some interest.

Why did Marjon leave his coach after two years? Is Beach going to be loaded next season or did they just have available PT? Any other players doing the Seattle Shuffle?

Beach graduated their best players (Kevin Porter-USC, Trevante Anderson-San Fran), so barring any other transfers it looks like Beauchamp and Kemp should be their stars. No one else of note (D1 recruits) on the current roster. Garfield w/ them would have been a better team with them than Beach will be, most likely.

No reported reason for the transfers that I've seen

Are we recruiting … Josh Christopher (Mayfield HS, CA) … ?

This from the Kansas City Star:

"Christopher’s recruitment is interesting because strength coach Nicodemus Christopher, his cousin, appears to be taking the lead. That makes sense and no NCAA rule can stop Nicodemus from reaching out to his own flesh and blood. ... A source tells The Star that Southern California coach Andy Enfield watched him this week along with assistants from UCLA and Gonzaga. Mark Few of Gonzaga could watch Christopher by the end of the week and Georgetown, Oregon and Kansas are supposed to stop by next week. Noticeably absent from that list is Pitt, where Nicodemus’ brother Garry is the strength coach. Given the kind of recruiter Jeff Capel is, I thought the Panthers would be all over Josh."

I doubt Mark gets 50,000 miles a year in travel since the team travel is all private jet. With his international travel, depending on carrier, Tommy might get that and more. I don’t wish it on anyone. I do about 150,000 a year and the free bag and free upgrade (when available!) come no where near compensating for it. I suppose there’s a chance the team has a contract with a carrier for all the coaches that provides them some comforts. I don’t know about that stuff.

I lived in the PI for three years and was also married to a Filipino. In the PI, basketball is KING...I can see him signing as he most probably comes from a big family. Their culture is such that the children take care of their parents, which is why they have large families. The #1 export in the PI is their workers and they all send money back to their families. If he signs then there is a strong chance he will be the highest earner in his family, so he will do the same - send his money home to assist with his family. It would have been nice to see him play here in the states, especially at GU but the family comes first in their culture...

My wife was born in the Philippines but grew up in LA. The Philippines along with Lithuania are the two most basketball crazed nations in the world but unfortunately the average height for a Filipino male is like 5'8 so when a Kai Sotto comes along he has an entire nation pulling for him. The kid is legit, hence the multimillion $ offer to play in Spain. 247 has him 80% Kansas lean, but if you look at the part that a recruit can control by what they tell 247 Gonzaga is Warm and Kansas is Cold. This would be a great backcourt, him and Harris! Add in Ravet and Foster with some experience and could be one of the better backcourts we have ever had.

Few and his staff have done their due diligence on this young man and have offered him a scholarship, along with setting up a visit for him. All of us here that think we know more to the story than the coaching staff and think we should pass on a kid that the staff is not passing on should really think about what we say on a discussion forum like this, as if his parents are reading this it could sour them on Gonzaga and take the ball out of our staffs hands. Trust our staff, they have done the work, they trust what they have found, if the staff sours on him then just look at how they have handled other recruits in the past they have soured on, they just back off (aka Balsa).

I am not claiming anything is right or wrong or that we should blame things on being young and making a mistake, I am saying TRUST THE STAFF!

Exactly what I've been saying. Some just have to pass judgement on a 16yr old kid with only partial knowledge of the situation. Like Tommy has said before, we only know about 5% of what is really going on in recruiting and this is no different. Bottom line, TRUST THE STAFF!

The 5% is so true. I think in the next few weeks there are going to be some names that come out that none of us here on the fan forum even know about and they are on campus visiting or signing. We already have a great 2019 class and a good start to 2020 a few additions to both will only put us in a situation to be contending for the NC for several years to come.

How much do you think the investigation into certain programs actually hurts with recruiting? Are coaches telling recruits that nothing is going to happen for a couple of years so don't worry about it? They are saying something to keep getting recruits despite an active FBI investigation. Do the recruits just accept the "we are innocent" BS? I don't get it.

Washington native worth keeping eye on as grad transfer next year.

Eleven days after announcing his intention to leave Western Washington, he posted a photo of Point Loma’s Golden Gymnasium on social media with a message that began: “Three short years ago, the thought of playing college basketball almost seemed impossible to me.”

He has options now, too. He could play one season at Point Loma and turn pro. He could return for a second season with the Sea Lions. He could graduate this spring and transfer to a Div. I program for his senior year without sitting out.

“Once people figured out he could be a grad transfer,” DeBoer says, “we started getting calls from some very major universities. I’m talking the top teams in the country calling, I’ll just leave it at that. Once people started seeing his highlight tape, they were like: ‘What on Earth? What’s this kid doing hiding in Bellingham, Wash.? This kid has skills.’”

Hommes prefers not to talk about next year. He’s a basketball player. He worries about the next practice, the next play, the next game. He’ll sort it out later.

“He literally just wants to be a college kid and have fun with his teammates,” says Looney, whose Sea Lions are picked to win the PacWest Conference. “He doesn’t want to deal with any of it. I would love it if he stayed here for two years. We’d be extremely blessed. But the reality is, if he’s that good, he needs to graduate and just go pro.”

Clint Parks, who has trained several NBA players and currently works with SDSU’s McDaniels, spent time in the gym with Hommes over the summer. Consider him impressed.

“One of the premier wing prospects on the West Coast — big-time talent and high character,” Parks says. “He’s got one of the prettiest jump shots in college basketball and he can really get off the floor as well. I’ve had several NBA front-office guys ask me if I believe he’s draftable, and I do, 100 percent.

Awesome article, thanks for sharing. Sounds like he might get drafted out of a DII school which is extremely rare. When they said he scored 36 in a pro-am game against all NBA players it reminded me of Corey. I wonder if we are one of the high major programs that inquired about him.

OK, I just watched his highlight reel and this kid is legit! He can shoot (almost 50% from three point land), dribble, drive, and has crazy athleticism, his vertical has got to be over 40 inches and he's already had two ACL surgeries, that's nuts! I really hope we are one of the high major programs after him that his coach was talking about if he doesn't declared for the NBA draft. If Zach leaves after the season he could fill-in for one year as a grad transfer to ease in the Lithuanian kid and him and Corey at the two and three would be legit! Here's his reel, it is very impressive:

I think people are trying to connect the dots; stud potential grad transfer from the state of Washington and his current coach said that very high major programs have contacted them about him coming to their school next season if he doesn't declare for the NBA draft. As dialed in as Tommy and Few are, you gotta think they're well aware of this kid, and if ZN does declare, he can step right in for one season at the 2 guard while Arlauskas gets acclimated. Hommes at the 2 and Corey at the 3 next year would be sick.

I was too, as I have not heard his name in a long time. This might just be the case of a kid that can take 5 visits as Junior, 5 more as Senior, so he is starting out with schools that he "likes" but does not love and next fall he will head to Kansas for a visit. That's awesome. The way Evans' story read, it sounded like Oumar Ballo is class of 2019? "The signing of Timme only adds further to Gonzaga’s sparkling 2019 class. Next fall, he will be joined by Rivals150 members Brock Ravet and Anton Watson, along with Martynas Arlauskas. The WCC juggernaut may not be done yet, as it is the favorite for Oumar Ballo, one of the more coveted international prospects who hails from Mali."

Is there a chance Ballo is class of 19 or is he the guy we start a 20 page thread over next year?

If anyone has access to 247 VIP I see Evan Daniels is having a Q/A today, they should post a question on Ballo there and report back (without breaking any rules).

A few 2020 names to watch Julian Strawther (has a visit schedule in Feb), Daishen Nix, Nimari Burnett, and Zach Harvey. The class of 2020 the staff is really focused on the guard position to go along with the 2019 class that is more heavy on the bigs. Although Harvey is mentioned in this post, the staff is wanting him to reclassify back to 2019, but either way they really want him (2019 or 2020).

He is the number 31 recruit in the state of California alone for 2020. Surprised that we're going after somebody ranked so low, unless they are expecting him to blow up quickly.

Yeah it is interesting that is forsure. I thought it was interesting that he is D. Harris' old teammate to. Wonder if Dom and his dad have some insight on him that the rest of us are not seeing that they passed on to the staff.

11 on composite. 7 on 247, 10 on ESPN, 17 on Rivals. We are in on several really good guard prospects to pair with Harris in 2020. If we land another 1 or 2 of them and Ballo comes too that class could rival 2016 and 2019.

I agree. I think pairing that group with 2019 would spell another few Final Four runs.

Apparently he's also a pretty big football player, and his 247 rating appears to be for football (position is dual-threat QB), where he's lower ranked/rated. Here's his ESPN basketball profile:

Is Liam Lloyd a walk on candidate for Gonzaga? He would already be eligible for free tuition.

Zags will be in to see Ben Carlson, a 4-star 6'9" big in MN. Sure do like his game. He's built big and wide like Cory Violette and has a nice shot out to 20 feet.

Minnesota's been good to us; gave us Sam Dower and Geno. Have to think they're gonna see Jalen Suggs too while we're there.

he looks a little thick and chubby in the last video that you posted; seems to have slimmed down and gotten much fitter in the one that I posted.

He looks thick and chubby because the second video is Ben Carlson a 6'6" 235 jr at Indiana-Wesleyan University.

C'mon man. What do you want Tommy to say, " I won't let my son talk to any other schools I'm forcing him to be a zag"? Of course he's going to say that. But at the end of the day the kid will be a Zag.

1) Liam is not GU good yet. 2) Tommy is not just saying this because it’s a foregone conclusion. 3) The decision is completely Liam’s at the end of the day 4) Just because he would be eligible for free tuition doesn’t mean he wouldn’t take a scholarship. These kids work very hard to attain scholarships and they are a big deal when they’re earned.

Yeah, but why waste a schollie? Can't he attend school for free since his father is an employee?

A student & athlete like Liam might be in the 99th percentile of athletic potential compared to the general population, but maybe you now really need to be in the 99.9th to see major minutes for a top-10 national basketball powerhouse. The difference between those two percentiles is 1in100!

Maybe he'll come to GU and be a great starter, maybe he'll come to GU and be a role player in spot minutes, but perhaps he wants to live, study, and play basketball somewhere other than Spokane and for someone other than his dad. It is no kind of mark against Liam, Tommy Lloyd, or GU if he chooses to enroll at a college where (among other differences from GU) Liam could start from day 1 or have a more realistic chance of starting for at least a couple years.

I know at 18yrs old that I wouldn't have wanted to play a sport for my dad and have my first few adult years take place in the city I grew up in.

IMO spy, Liam is a walk-on caliber player at best at Gonzaga, I have watched many of his games... there are other places he would start or get more minutes of PT.... the difference between 99. and 99.9 is a good analogy.... I'm not sure his career at GU would be better than Jack Beach's... but again...

Just my opinion...

Go! Zags!!!
