I suppose the same thing could be said for the Zags...

42-40 Cougs at half. Lo dale sat much of the first half with 2 fouls so second half could be a different story.

Small sample but it doesn’t look like SMC is in the same league as GU.

The Gaels are not even close to on the zags level this year... Once again.... It's laughable that we weren't picked to win this league coming off of a national championship berth. The coaches are just bored with the same people winning every year.

I like Acquaah and Flynn the 2 young guards for the cougs this game, but that team sucks pretty bad. With Landale back in the 2nd half they will likely be fine, but come on WCC coaches....

Hopefully that will finally put to rest this strange narrative that St. Mary's is the team to beat in the conference - the Gaels were straight-up overrated from the get-go. The Cougs on a neutral court in Cali? Seriously?

DixieZag
11-24-2017, 11:56 AM
The fact that SMC was overrated doesn't mean I want them losing to the Cougs on a neutral floor. That is a disaster for both SMC and the WCC. And I'm sure BYU can be counted upon to make it worse.

Jeez, the Cougs even Coug'd it for them, and they STILL lost!

From the gaels fan board

"After getting a decent sample of this team, I think it's time to recognize that Randy knew his team when he built this schedule."

hooter73

By that logic he knows his team every year and that they can’t do a full fledged big boy season, which has been my thought all along. Randy ain’t an idiot, he knows what he’s got, which is, just enough, once in a while.

They have the time to right the ship, but how does one right it when the schedule leaves them so few games that have any meaning to them?

The rest of their schedule:

Cal (sub 150 team)
Sac. State
Seattle
UC Irvine
Dayton
UNC Ashville

So, if they get to the conference with that one very bad loss, and not a single quality win, they're back to having to beat us, and pray that we are REALLY good when they do beat us - or they have to win in Vegas. They are going to have to hope that USF is for real, or USD isn't a fluke to even get some other support.

I highly doubt the committee will feel like rewarding them for doing the same thing they did 2 years ago.

A few observations at 7pm PT:

1) I felt going into this tourney that Duke was beatable. They have not looked "great" all season. Texas almost took them out. My worry is that Duke could have one of those performances where they put it all together in the title game.
2) The loser of tonight's GU/FLA tussle is in for a formidable opponent in Texas. Florida or Gonzaga could easily leave this tourney 1-2, despite being really good teams.
3) Saint Mary's and Randy Bennett just can't seem to handle the limelight yet. It's a program hurdle they need to overcome. But the loss to WSU and Uncle Ernie today proved something that I have been preaching all along.......that the Gaels would miss Rahon way, way, way more than people thought. He was the straw that stirred the drink on their team last year. Excellently with post entries, the pick and roll and finishing near the rim.
4) If you don't think the FBI investigation has ROCKED Arizona's program you are crazy. It really shows how "mental" the game of basketball is. Zona has just folded in the tent. They are down 16 to Purdue right now....a team that's better than SMU and NC State. Losing your top assistant (albeit a crook and cheater) right before the season is a major deal, and then dealing with all the negative attention and scrutiny.....I had feelings that Arizona might not win this tournament, but to go 0-3?? I thought if they just rolled out the basketballs they could collect 2 wins.

Good post CDC.

Rahon was like the 1st year we lost Bouldin.

Didn't expect to feel it as much as we did. Stumbled out the gate until catching our groove.

Losing a leader, gritty, do it ALL guard is harder than most teams realize.

Rahon was the steady hand. The director. Conductor. Mistro of SMC. Not to mention the toughness for Naar to operate his finesse game. Rahon played thru injury, dove for balls, guarded bigs, took charges, got steals, risked himself for the betterment of the team.

I don't see Naar or Neal channeling toughness or diving for balls anytime soon.

Makes a difference.

Is anyone watching the Ohio State/Stanford game? They have been discussing the fact that if Chris loses this game, he'll have to face his former team, Butler, on Sunday. A team he just coached last season. Goodman and Dakich have just been going back and forth, back and forth. I know through my media contacts that Dakich is one of the most disliked guys in the entire business because he believes that ex-coaches and ex-players are superior to the media, and he rudely makes you aware of it....but in private. But now he has gone public. About 7 zingers thrown at Goodman for not knowing anything about basketball because he was never a college coach, and the ultimate one: "Let's let the little sideline reporter decide how much dread Chris feels." If Goodman has a "loose canon" in him, I wouldn't be surprised if he slugs Dakich during the intermission. The exchange was that bad. ESPN has obligation to sit Dan down and read him the riot act. After all, he is a member of the media RIGHT NOW. Of course if I had my choice, I would have fired the guy ages ago. And I am saying that is despite the fact that Jeff Goodman is not one of my favorite analysts.

I kind of looked like a fool by saying Xavier was so good, huh? Then again, ASU is still unbeaten.

Also, when it comes to mental toughness, you are probably not going to get it from Neal. I don't know, it depends. I know his whole situation because my Dad works for UNM basketball to get some extra money during his retirement. Neal received death threats and the whole nine yards while he was there. College basketball has seen very few players who have been so viciously treated as Neal was at UNM. He was scared for his life. Noodles Neal had to get him out of UNM for his own personal safety. I am not sure if he will ever recover from the incidents.

Dakich is very tiresome. . .we can only hope he doesn't call our game.

He said last night that he will have courtside seats for the Florida/GU game.

I just wouldn't say anything if I were Goodman at this point. Trust me, next week there will be a big meeting at ESPN over this incident tonight. I have never seen an analyst belittle a sideline reporter like that in my life.

That's awful.

Really really feel for the guy, and death threats should be investigated and prosecuted.

Wow. I am sure there are 9 "good" people for every real bad one and I hope they rallied a bit around him.

What's crazy is that he wasn't that bad. He took ill-advised shots now and then, but when you're the coach's son, nothing short of being Julius Irving seems to satisfy some people. The fact of the matter is that UNM just wasn't a good team. My Dad was really happy to see him go back to St. Mary's. Says that is really where he belonged in the first. It all due respect to Noodles, he would've gotten better coaching under Bennett and would've won a lot more games.
