10X better effort on the glass and on loose/50-50 balls.

JIII letting the game come to him, taking what the defense gives, and not forcing it.

More passing from our bigs. Larsen had some beautiful passes and JIII did have a couple nice assists as well.

Smarter moments from our guards. Picking and choosing the right time to dribble drive or set up offense. Pretty willy nilly, sloppy last night at times. No flow to their game management.

Seeing what Silas can do as a shot creator. He hit some big shots last night, when we needed it most. Mid range, a drive, 3pt shots. I'd like to see him explore that a bit more, as Perkins is a very good passer but awful finisher. I wish Silas would fade-away less on shot attempts, b/c when he "steps" into his shots, they almost always go in, yet he has a terrible habit of literally fading away, even on 3pt attempts.

Larsen at the center of that zone. The guys are active when we zone, it was just as effective as last season. Larsen is a nice presence and can block shots, as his length is solid. J3 is awesome on the ends but when he anchors the zone, its not nearly as intimidating....or effective. J3 is an amazing help defender, and good at preventing post up catches, but his one on one defense is lacking. He leans too much and gets in trouble.

I think Kispert can score more than he's scoring and would be great to see more screens set up for him. Not just 3pt shots and dribble drive off shot fakes. He's tough, big, strong, and would be interesting to see curl screens set up for him around the paint. Has a nice touch too, and finishes with some tenacity.

Norvell could use some caffeine or something. Just a lazy, lazy defender. In all 3 games. Even the exhibition. Falls asleep too often. He tracks the player until one screen is used and then gives up almost. He seems to have some gusto on offense, and likes to make plays, but his defense is nearly non-existent. Given his size, length, he could be a formidable defender, but won't log major mins until he commits himself. At least 3 free lay ups were given up by him, also forcing J3 and Tillie to foul to help bail him out. Interesting dilemma, as we need a scoring/finishing guard on the floor and he can be that player for us. Gotta light a fire to get him to stay committed on D.

I wish Tillie could play all 40 mins. I also wish he had a tad more muscle, as he looses out on balls he's tracking so well due to lack of strength. Tillie could snag 15 rebs a game with a bit more muscle.

Perkins has a nifty first move, crossover, but does him no good unless he passes. Just like his first few years, doesn't have the ability to finish around the rim. We took NWG's easy floater for granted. IF Perkins could finish better or featured a floater, he'd have 15 pts a game, easy.

We are a good 3pt shooting team. At least 4 misses last night were half-way down the basket. Keep shooting! This team will not be able to out execute or out muscle teams in the paint this season. Need to hit shots and take good shots.

Ohio St is very efficient in the paint. They are also one of the better rebounding teams we'll face this season. We must hit the glass HARD, and stay out of foul trouble. Tillie and J3 are so critical to our success as a team, and they cannot rack up fouls quickly. OSU game plan will be to get these guys out of the game. The Buckeyes are BIG. They have size and weight. Their bigs are all 245+. We'll need Kispert and even our guards hitting the boards.

If we are to win ANY games in Portland, we will need to hit shots. Keep up the 40% from 3pt, hit the glass hard, keep Tillie/J3 out of foul trouble, and the guards must find ways to finish better.

We have one common opponent with Ohio State and that being Texas Southern. Zags by 28 over Texas and Buckeyes over Texas by 18. Giving that spread I'll go Zags by 10. 82-72 in Portland. And I will be at that game in full Zag gear - so looking forward.

Given where we are in this team's development, this one should be close. Gobs of talent in development on our side facing a typical Big 10
team with big guys who rebound and shoot decently.
I want further development as a tam.....I was Zach to focus. . I'd like to see better defense.

I'm with the group that simply wants a win. A loss in the first game of this tourney would simply be disastrous and would set us waaaayyy back in the minds of the BB "media" as a team rebuilding instead of reloading.

Ohio St. is much better than I expected coming into the season. Keita Bates-Diop is one of the more versatile forwards in the country. He's averaging 10 rebounds while shooting 5 three pointers per game. If JWIII draws that assignment that means Kispert would be tasked with guarding Jae'Sean Tate who is a load and probably like anybody Kispert has ever covered.

I'm starting to think this will be a close one which is scary because we really need to get on the winner's side of this bracket.

Would like to see more composure and back to sharing the ball. More importantly, a solid game plan to deal with Keita Bates-Diop who leads OSU in: PPG / RPG / **2nd in 3pt% / 3pts made / Blocks / mins per game....not to mention the best +/- on the team.

I think GU wins this game but it will be closer than we would like and we hang on late with good free throw shooting...

OSU has a weight advantage so it will be interesting to see how our quickness matches up with their size. They have two 6'9" players that way 270 and 240 and their best offensive player is 6'7" and weighs 235. I like our bench and think we are a better scoring team from inside and outside the 3pt line but can we defend OSU? To me that is the question...

I would like to see us limit Diop's opportunity to get the ball...really make life miserable for him, especially since he is their only decent 3pt shooter...limit his touches or at the very least contest his shots...He is also their best rebounder so blocking him out would be a priority.

I would also like to see our bigs play solid defence and not get into foul trouble...

JWII needs to play under control and look to pass when the double team comes...and make his FT's...

I would like to see Josh drive and dish and Cory be more assertive...Melson will have his hands full playing D against Tate, Williams and Jallow

I see GU winning 81-73

Agreed.

Have a feeling OSU's game plan will be to use their weight advantage early to get Tillie and J3 some cheap fouls.

They will try to pound in the paint. Defense, or smart post defense will be key to winning or losing.

Keep in mind, 2 of Ohio St's starters were consensus 5*, Top-25 kids out of high school. The other 3? All 4* recruits. They don't even have a 3* on the roster!

I get that recruiting rankings don't mean much, yet point is, they are a very talented ball club comprised of all top flight players.

Many here are predicting the zags get into the 80s. That seems a tall order against a Big 10 team that is typically very physical and defensive minded. That stated, the zags can score in a lot of ways and at every position, so a score in the 80s is certainly within reach and I think Few will likely direct the offense to free-flow and hopefully we'll be raining 3's on TOS.

I do think the zags have the advantage in most areas and it will carry them to a double digit win. We'll see though, the zags have looked great but this is the game where the rubber hits the road.

Just find a way to come outta this thing with at least (2) wins.

Even if we lost out the gate, our next 2 games would be vs Texas, Butler, Arkansas, or Stanford.

No easy task. Stanford isn't great yet they are still legit competition.

Butler and Texas would be quality wins by seasons end, no doubt.

If we win, we get to play #6 Flrodia, and still Texas or Butler or Arkansas if we lose.

Point is, going 3-0 is the ultimate outcome, yet winning 2 games i.e. 2-1 is still very respectable by the time March rolls around.

The Committee sees wins and losses, not whether or not if we won or lost in Rd 1 of the PK80 Tourney.

So, my hope is notching at least 2 victories no matter how we do it.

Heck, with our young guns and unknown mental make up at this juncture -- I still question a true leader this yr -- we could go 0-3. I don't even want to consider it, but still could happen.

I would qualify 2-1 as a huge success by Sunday night.

Long post for Happy Thanksgiving full of stuffing! Enjoying some Rafanelli zinfandel so hopefully not too rambling

Larsen looked good in the zone. Was it an adjustment after his and the Zags first half struggles defending the pick and roll out of the M2M, or was it planned all along? Idk, but his performance anchoring the zone sparked the Zags in the 2nd half after the opposite in the 1st when he collected fouls and the Zags collectively struggled to defend.

Looks like it will be fun once again to follow the defensive game plan, and the tweaks game to game and in-game. I have read here that different coaches on the staff have helped this become a Zag strength, Bone’s scouting for example and again Idk, but it’s been sweet.

Re. the zone to my memory, sometimes it worked last year and its effectiveness/ineffectiveness had a lot to do with the opposition matchup and the personnel groupings Few wanted for time/score. For example, vs. TN when the refs went bonkers and Few was forced to go zone, it was not effective and TN torched it. Another time forced to go zone was vs. ISU when the Cyclones went 5 out on O vs. our M2M and Burton got loose on Karno and then anybody else in front of him; Zags went zone and cooled ISU’s FG% but got creamed on the d glass and struggled to finish the d possession with the rebound. Zags zoned vs. WVU in the tournament but had to get out of it late after giving up 3s and o boards, went M2M down the stretch and all 3 guards—JP, Silas and NWG—came up big defensively along with JIIIs ability to switch on the pick and roll.

This year? Early obviously, but we’ve seen all kinds of looks from the Zags defensively in these 3 games with different personnel groups trying things out and adjusting. I would think the D game plans would again be versatile to dare poor 3pt shooters to make them and make good 3pt shooters do something else, whether out of the zone or M2M or press/trap, whatever. Also the Zags should be able to mix and match both scheme and personnel as they have in the recent past with in-game adjustments depending on things until they find what works, if the initial game plan needs adjusting for whatever reason.

Could be wrong of course, but I think that’s what happened vs. USU defensively, both in scheme with the zone and personnel with Jones.

It wasn’t always like this in Spokane since I’ve been following, used to be much more predictable and inflexible defensively imo, but now it’s become a weapon for the Zags. I’m hoping to see this continue tomorrow and throughout the weekend and the season.

Given where we are in this team's development, this one should be close. Gobs of talent in development on our side facing a typical Big 10
team with big guys who rebound and shoot decently.
I want further development as a tam.....I was Zach to focus. . I'd like to see better defense.
Zags 70-65.

I watched big portion of Ohio St game - score closer than game was - Ohio St poured it on late.
I'd like 12-18 Pt win tonight.

Buckeye fan here. Please be gentle.

Though I don't have a clue what score prediction to offer, I will say this: I think one team playing a 9:30 PM game while the other team is playing a 12:30 AM game will prove to be a bigger factor than most are considering. Gonzaga is most assuredly a solidly better team without the time zone difference, but I think any gap in ability will be magnified in the second half when the time differential really rears its ugly head. I think Gonzaga -5.5 is a good bet. I hope to be proven wrong.

Good point on the time. Gonzaga caught #3 Georgia Tech at midnight in Las Vegas about 12 or 13 years ago ... and I recall the time difference being a factor in the Gonzaga win.

If I weren't a fan of one of these two programs, I'd be loading up on Gonzaga. OSU lost 3 of its top 4 scorers from last year's team that didn't even make it to the NIT. We shoot jumpers like Lloyd Christmas shoots a handgun. We're an unknown entity about whom -- after a big loss -- people say, "Well, duh." Throw in that the Buckeyes will be playing the second half when they'd otherwise have already been asleep for a few hours? From my vantage point, that's a call-the-bookie and back-up-the-truck moment.

Listen, I love the Buckeyes and I pray to eat my words. I'm not one of those pessimistic, sky-is-falling fans. But I do think I have a vague understanding of reality. Though we've looked better than expected out of the gate, the competition has been very poor. I'm hanging any optimism I have on Holtmann and his historical ability to get his guys to play hard and fundamentally sound ball under good game plans designed by a smart coaching staff.

Welcome to our board.

Like the Buckeyes, we are looking at a very different roster from last year's team. We lost four of our top seven players from last year's Final Four squad. We return some very good players, but we will lean heavily on underclassmen who have not played much Division I ball. For some of these young players, Ohio State will be their first real taste of game action against a Top 50 opponent. We are eager to see how they handle that challenge.

Perhaps I'd be a little more optimistic about our chances tonight if I had watched, say, the USU game, which is not to say that the Zags aren't justified but that they're working through a roster greener than usual. To be sure, you lost a lot of talent and production from last year's team. OSU lost a lot of production, too, but I'm not so sure they lost a lot of talent.

Really curious to see Williams guard Bates-Diop. That's probably the match-up that decides if OSU has a shot.

I cannot begin to explain how much I despise THE Ohio State University... but that aside... What are you hoping to see out of the Zags Thanksgiving night? Predictions?

Have at it boys and girlsHope to see a win so Uber can see GU play Florida on Friday.

Micah Potter, our starting post player, won't play due to an ankle injury. True freshman Kaleb Wesson will start. He is foul-prone. This is not good for the Buckeyes. There is no post depth after Wesson.
