Fredrickson Nominated by Peers as Zag of the Month

Earns September honor

Nov. 17, 2017

SPOKANE, Wash. - With an incredible work ethic on the diamond, a reputation for getting involved in the community all while balancing one of the most demanding majors offered at Gonzaga, it was clear to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee who should be awarded as September’s Zag of the Month.

Daniel Fredrickson, a redshirt junior with the Zags, currently holds a 3.80 GPA in mechanical engineering and has been recognized on both the Dean’s and President’s List each semester at Gonzaga.

A Woodinville Wash. native, Fredrickson transferred to Gonzaga from Washington State University in the Spring of 2016. Although required to sit for the remainder of his redshirt season, he immediately made an impact on the baseball roster. The following spring, Fredrickson would get his chance. Starting in right field 33 out of 37 games played in the 2017 season, Fredrickson contributed 20 RBI’s, 20 runs scored, and received All-West Coast Conference Honorable Mention. He went on a team-high 13-game hit streak and a 15-game on base streak before suffering a season ending injury in April of 2017.

Without hesitation and between studies and practice, Fredrickson finds time to volunteer in the community. He has participated in numerous outreach events including the Gonzaga Logan Block Party, the Muscular Dystrophy Association walk, Habitat for Humanity, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation walk, along with multiple drives benefiting Catholic Charities.

Known as a quiet leader, Fredrickson consistently shows his commitment to both baseball and academics. “Daniel is a guy that’s going to push you. He’s always there before practice, always staying late, and the guy who is going to challenge you to be better,” notes one of Fredrickson’s teammates.

“Those are the best teammates and the reason why he’s in the role he is in today for Zag of the Month.”
