Man.......he's 30 already! That went fast! I do agree with the statement in the piece: hard to believe he's not in the NBA. Lots of courage to keep his dream going.

Has anyone read Bakari's novel?

Should have been required summer reading for the board.

"For Love Or The Game"
I read it a few years ago, Bakari is a great guy, who is extremely determined. I wish him well.

What is really ironic is that I was in Melbourne on Tuesday morning (our time) and picked up the same paper. I was going to post the information back when I got back this morning!

I will keep track of how he does and may even go and watch him play the West Sydney Razorbacks (includes Mathew Knight) play them here in Sydney.

Here's another story about Bakari: sportal.com.au (http://sportal.com.au/default.aspx/basketball-news-display/dragons-unveil-new-recruit-37770/page/2)

From the story, I gather there is a limit on "import" players allowed on each team. Is that correct?

That's right native, the Australian league allows a maximum of two imports for each team. It is still a very competitive league somewhere just below the top five in Europe in my humble opinion.

I am not aware of any other Gonzaga Alumuni playing in the league, but there are a fair number of x-WCC players playing here.

What about John Rillie and Paul Rogers? Are they retired now?

All former Aussie Zags still play Down Under. Rogers, Dench and myself play. Bakari is playing his first game Saturday your time. The team he joins is 0-6, so there is some work to be done. He was bought in to replace former Duke bench warmer Nick Horvath.

Rogers has just been joined on his roster by former Pepperdine player, Gerald Brown. For a lighter look at Aussie basketball and other rants, check this out.
www.jronfire.blogspot.com I will be interested to hear what you guys have to say. I cannot wait for the college season to start!

Hope all is well in Zagland. John Rillie

Except that with that Mohawk, Fitz couldn't say "We get the round thing to the bald thing" any more.

Fitz would not have coached, he would have suffered a heart attack.

I agree. It's nice to see that you former Zags are still doing well, and playing. Best of luck to all you guys in your upcoming seasons.

Wow! What an honor to have you check in, John! I've bookmarked your blog and will definitely be checking in from time to time.

Fans can find lots of photos of John here: http://www.viewimages.com/Search.aspx?mid=1918836&epmid=2&partner=Google.

Type "John Rillie" and the search box and a ton of photos come up. Unfortunately, none show John as a Zag! Have you got any Rillie Zag pics you can link us to, John?

This one popped up from September this year, with John trying to reason with a ref (i.e., whining mode):

Bakari helped his team (South Dragons) to their first win. You can check out boxscores on my blog spot www.jronfire.blogspot.com

Paul Rogers (Perth Wildcats) and Gerald Brown lost this weekend, while Axel Dench and his team (Adelaide 36ers) are enjoying a five game losing streak.

Oh, my team (Townsville Crocodiles) had a win.

As for any GU pixs, I have none so if anybody has any of a bald, pasty white guy please e-mail them. They will be appreciated greatly.

Thanks, John Rillie

My search for John Rillie photos online has just begun, but here are a couple:

From Gonzaga's history page (http://www.gonzaga.edu/Academics/Libraries/Foley-Library/Departments/Special-Collections/exhibitions/GonzagaHistory1990.asp):

http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff232/ZagNative/NBA/Others/JohnRiley-Basketball1995-enlarged.jpg

During the 1993-1994 Bulldog basketball seasons, both the menís and womenís teams achieved success. The menís team captured its first West Coast Conference title. The womenís team also won more games than ever (21). Both teams for the first time appeared in Division 1 postseason play by earning trips to the national invitational tournaments. The following year, the menís Bulldog team competed in its first NCAA tournament after winning the WCC tournament. The menís team would continue to make annual post season appearances. In 1999, Gonzaga appeared in its first NCAA Elite Eight game. In more recent years the Lady Bulldogs have had success in making it to post season play.
And a grainy one from "Tales from the Hardwood" (http://books.google.com/books?id=HA_j7eXp6xsC&dq=john+rillie+gonzaga&printsec=frontcover&source=web&ots=g8QaJxI2D3&sig=E6oQIXcvPj04fkQ6N_4vufDPCts#PPA166,M1):

It's been noted elsewhere (http://www.ocregister.com/ocregister/sports/atoz/article_1004737.php) that:

Morrison was a Gonzaga ballboy when Fitzgerald was there, when an Australian shooter named John Rillie had helped Gonzaga win the WCC title in '95. Morrison committed to Gonzaga early. When he became dominant as a senior, the recruiters realized what they'd lost.

I don't recall any mustachioed ballboys during that era ...
