Here's a quote: " Coaches tell me the bit contributor last season is ready to assert himself this season." He's the only Zags listed in the pre-season first round NBA draft. Personally, I couldn't be happier and I hope it happens. I totally believe he's a rare bird. He's not only a great player but I think a great young man. His smile reminds me of Magic Johnson's. I remember thinking when watching him play in the FIBA Tournament this summer "If Rui can look this good while playing on a team that's as bad as Japan is, imagine him playing on Gonaga's team and how good he'd look on that team. Gonzaga has guards who can hit 3's." Because Hachimura was a great scorer in this tournament if you didn't follow the games you would NOT have seen that he was totally playing team ball. He consistently hit wide open shooters from the 3 pt line and time after time Japan's guards would miss. Also Rui was double-teamed and triple teamed time after time. He also averaged 12 rebounds a game.

At FIBA we got to see Japan and Hachimura play with 3 of the top 5 teams: Canada #1, Italy #2 and Spain #5. Japan lost to Italy by 2 points and Hachimura almost pulled off a miracle finish by hitting two unbelievable 3's in a row at the end of the game. This can now be called asserting himself. They lost to the champions by 25 100 to 75 which isn't really that bad. I only point these things out because we all know he made a big name for himself at FIBA. However, Japan did play the best teams there: so we were able to see Hachimura up against very good players. Tillie was the 13th highest player with an average of 12 ppg with a tournament high in the quarter finals with 22 points. He looked very good that game.

I can't wait to see Rui cut loose this season. I am so excited to see him put his athleticism on display. I just hope he is ready for our tough non-conference schedule. I think he's gonna destroy the WCC ... only question/issue is whether he will be ready to hit the ground running when the season starts. We need him.

If the team accepts him and he asserts himself he will play quite well in the OOC schedule and the tournament in Portland.
