View Full Version : If we lose this 1 player, our dance streak is at risk

The title says it all. Is there one player without whom we are at risk of either the WCC championship or a ticket to The Dance? If so, who is that player and why?

We are pretty deep and rounded but I will say JW3-he won plenty of games for us last year and is only going to be more valuable this year.

Edited to add: we would need to lose more than 1 to miss the dance....

Right now I feel like we are an 8-9 seed. A lot of question marks I have. Especially the fact can we win any of the big time games on our non conference schedule. If we aren't we are repeating 2016 and 2011 and 2007

I doubt there's any one player that is so critical that we miss the tournament. The player we can least afford to lose (as of now) would appear to be JWIII.

I hope it wasn't Rem "RemVP" Bakamus.

Given the depth everywhere else, losing one of our starting bigs would be a punch to the gut. I agree that JW3 is the most important of that group (even though Tillie may be better, JW3 will be anchoring the defense, it seems).

We need these three Fearsomes healthy all year:
JW3, Tillie and Rui. Our three best players. Anything else is a bonus. This team is at least Sweet 16 good.

Tils.

Probably Williams because of how thin the frontcourt is.

But also Perkins. Without him, we'd have only a couple freshmen point guards, though Wade isn't a typical frosh age wise.

There's no "I" in "team".

Hey .... I just made that up .... and I am not fearful of the "streak"' ending .... I'm just excited about this year's edition of the guys (which may "not" be finalized at this point).

This team is so deep and so talented that even if we lose one of the top five players we will still make the tournament. That being said Perkins is the only true point guard on the team.

Perkins

to me, there are two guys who are unique on the team. im excited about our shooters, and our depth and athleticism 2-4... but we only have one experienced pg (perkins) and only one true center (larsen). i'd be really worried if we lost either of them.

Success at basketball at any level.....begins with guard play....you can go up from there..... but if you don't have a guard that can run the offense, you aren't going anywhere...IMHO of course...

I'm just along for the ride and I hope it's full of "Thrills and Chills". A roller coaster is fine as long as it ends with "Oh Man"! That was FUN!

Which means GZ knows of a player not here yet who would be the one that the Lakers could least afford to lose if he were on that team.

Just kidding.

Its just a fun hypothetical. I am not worried about the streak either, I'm more worried about the 2nd weekend streak.

The thing about JWIII is, we had so much talent last year, it's easy for me and others to forget how many games he was by far the best player on the floor that night, and even a couple we don't win without him. Plus, we have 16 guards and 1.5 bigs, so losing him would be a bit of an issue.

It's all good. Our man with the proper security clearance isn't about to give up classified information.

I'm pretty sure this team could lose any one player and still be comfortably in the tourney field. Would need to lose 2 key guys to be at risk of missing it. I'm very high on this group.

I think we could lose 2 and still make the tourney. This team has a lot.

Totally agree. I think if you look at the St. Mary's games from the last two years, JWIII made a huge difference in the way he could swap off on those pick and rolls - he would be probably the biggest loss in my eyes.

For this hypothetical, can I pick the two? If so, Tillie and JW3.

Yeah, we'd still make it with small ball and Rui at the five.

Larsen at the 5, Rui at the 4.

Totally fair. At that point, Rui is going to get some 4, along with a bit from CK. Not ideal, and I don't want to see that injury situation. But you can still pnr and pnp the with those two. And you're probably going to play a lot more like the GSW's with the amount of three point shooters.

Larsen at the 5, Rui at the 4.

Yeah but that's not small ball at that point. Hope Larsen is healthy and does well, but the only thing I'm sure of is that we are loaded with guards that are extremely talented and athletic. Kispert looks ready to go right out of the gate also.

Edit: I guess I see Rui as a college 4 already, instead of a 3 (and I'm sure he'll play both of those positions).

So what chance do you give the Zags of making the dance? I loved NWG as much as anybody, but the additions of Wade, Norvell, and Kispert are making me feel very good about next year, not to mention everyone else we have.

So this team is at risk of missing the tourney with everybody healthy? Seems like what you're saying.

Entirely different team this upcoming year.. Loss of Collins and Shem make it so. No worries. We'd likely have been back in the FF is Collins had stayed. He didn't . SO we have J3 and Tillie. Those two disappear and it would be unlikely we win the league or an at large.......we don't know about Larsen.
Meanwhile ALL the other position 1-3 are covered and are supplied with superior players.
So it's the bigs we worry over. Either of those two (J3 or Tillie) get injured, it's going to be difficult to win and go deep. We have a huge amount of jeopardy down low.

With Domas and Wiltjer the streak was in major jeopardy. Win the WCC tournament or no go.

The difference in 2017/2018? This upcoming version of the Gaels is a better team than the one that Sabonis and Wiltjer lost to twice before winning the conference tournament.

Good point....I suspect there will only be the automatic this year as well...

Larsen.

Not that he'll be our go to player but likely our most important player by seasons end.

Need him healthy or it will unravel vs a decent frontcourt.

The way I see it...we can't lose one of our 2 experienced guards..(JP, Silas)..that would leave us very young at guard. I feel pretty good about our bigs...3 guys who could play the 5 (Larson, Tillie, JW3) 4 guys who can play the 4 (JW3, Tillie, CK, Rui) I think we have some wiggle room there..even more so if we get that Grad. Transfer.

We lose any of those 2 legit bigs and we're in trouble. MVP .

But if there was an MVP of this board for the Summer, one we couldn't get along without.........ZN is my pick. Just pulled that one out of my..
