The IOC on Friday added 3-on-3 to the Olympic program for 2020 in an effort to give the games a more youthful and urban appeal. Basketball and Olympic officials hope the half-court game is as successful as beach volleyball - a smaller, faster version of the 5-on-5 sport.

2024 they will add HORSE, at least that's what I heard!

Think there are better things to add - mma is one I'd like to see. Don't know how it would work, but I think it's more in line with what I view as an Olympic sport. Basketball is fine 5v5

I agree. No need for 3v3 basketball. JMO, but what do I know? Will pros be allowed to participate?

They do this and they tried to drop wrestling. What are they doing?

I hate when crap like this done and they threaten to do away with traditional sports like wresting, archery and fencing that are a humungous part of Olympic history and that are a joy to watch....largely because the sports receive almost zero TV coverage. I much prefer watching these sports than basketball and sports you see all the time on ESPN. Fencers and archers represent the true Olympic spirit. They love their sport, but it's primarily about representing their country for them. There are very few archers in the world who actually making a living at it.

I don't get this at all. At my gym, 3 on 3 is sort of a last resort if you're desperate to play and not enough people show up. Not enough bodies on the court to use picks and screens all that well. Good for the 1 on 1 players, I guess. Harder to help/rotate on D.

And using the girls' ball is a bit ridiculous, not to mention the fact that is seems it would throw off shooters.

You are 100% correct, CDC. Good points.

I used to love watching the Olympics. The last few Olympics I have watched less and less.

I will watch this, and I rarely watch the Olympics.

I wonder who is going to play, though. NBA players who didn't make the national team? Overseas pros? Is there such a thing as a 3 on 3 specialist?

Interesting read on the USA 2017 FIBA Championships 3 on 3 team, and 2020 Olympics. The team has former NW, Brown, Princeton and Lehigh players. Also mentions Santangelo/Hoopfest.

Good story; thanks. Changed my opinion on this somewhat. Might be entertaining after all.

I'll watch but agree with above about the beauty/appeal/prestige/history of the Olympics and the events

It would be pretty cool if Hoopfest could be one of the qualifying tournaments for the Olympic 3 on 3 team. . .

They can add all the sports they want....so along as they don't take away traditional sports like fencing, archery and wresting, and they don't deny those sports equal TV coverage on the NBC sister stations. Same goes with niche sports like badminton and table tennis (which are more entertaining than man might think).

the world champs make badminton look so easy -
it takes a hell of an athlete to learn the footwork, then execute it.
If you doubt it, try it. Also try hitting the bird backhand to the opponents
baseline while racing back to get the shot that went over your head to your baseline.
I would hate to see any of the classic sports removed from the olympics also.
The first olympics went almost 1200 years, let's see how long this modern Olympics
will last.

PLUS ONE

Two caveats:

*The equestrian events should award the medal to the horses, it'd be more fair and would be a cool award ceremony.
** Divers climbing out of the pool should be a separate sport unto itself. This is not a sexist comment, it can be awarded to both genders. TV ratings through the roof.

Synchronized events involving conjoined twins would be cool.

Didn't Killian and Zach C. both play on a 3x3 team before they came to Gonzaga. I'm pretty sure they played against each other in some tournament.

Good article from a wrestling perspective.
