Our first round opponent in PK80 is still bleeding. Ouch.

Just about the only quality player the Buckeyes did not see transfer this past year is their current 5th year senior, Trevor Thompson. 7' 0" tall and 250 lbs, Trevor averaged 10.7 Pts, 9.1 Rebs, and 0.4 Asts last season.

I wonder if Trevor would like to swithch teams for this coming year and play in PK80 for the good guys. Hmmm.

I wonder if Few is going to see if he wants to "guest coach" in his spare time like a number of other coaches that have come to spend some time with the Zags.

Retirement ? I thought they fired him.

It sure wasn't a resignation, OSU is paying the final 3 years on his contract. He looks much older than his stated age of 50.

A fair bit changed since the vote of confidence he received not long ago. It became clearer that is was not "if" but "when." The last couple departures were the death knell.

I will say that he and administration had a good working relationship and was liked. It's too bad the wheels fell off the wagon.

He may have been "fired" but how many people that are "fired" stay on to help find their replacement. Everything is weird about this.

The timing of this feels odd. Usually, firings happen at the end of a season, so that the university can start searching for a replacement before the top candidates take other openings. I suspect that they have already identified his replacement and more or less come to contract terms. If not, this was a very risky move by the AD.

They already missed out on Archie Miller. Do you think Greg Marshall or Chris Mack would take the job?

I, personally, choose not to use the pretentious THE in front of Ohio State University. There is no 'T' there in the name. When forced to use an additional phrase, I choose "Just Another Ohio State University".

I do wonder what happened to bring about Matta's ousting at this time of year.

Don't you all remember the article posted a few weeks ago about recruiting? Something about NCAA finding something? At the time I said Ohio St has a good record but if something is up, Football takes huge priority there. Looks like the ESPN/NCAA snoops found something. When a guy wins 78% of his games at a big high major university, you don't let him go while in a chit chat with the AD for no major reason.

What weird timing. The July recruiting period is fast approaching. Is something up?? Maybe something is wrong with the football program. Another instance of throwing men's basketball underneath the bus to save football??

He has had a lot of health issues over the years:

http://www.sportingnews.com/ncaa-basketball/news/thad-matta-health-issues-fired-ohio-state-basketball-gene-smith-replacement/1ukvoms8p6h341fluuxdaat6uf

A lot of them not talked about much because he tends to keep things to himself.......

No rumors on basketball infractions. I believe this had more to do with unexpected departures than anything else. Nothing to lose by letting him walk now and have the first crack at available prospective coaches. The timing of the departures, and the fact that he was at the end of the rope already, yielded the unusual timing of the firing (as far as I know, though sometimes things are known to only a few people).

Thad's body has been a mess for years. The daily routine he goes through to keep his body working and is shape is grueling and a testament to his character and work ethic. He is one of my favorite coaches and people. Very sad to hear this news. It will be extremely hard for Ohio State to find a replacement coach of this caliber. No idea what could be behind this. If it was a health or personal issue, I think that would have been stated. He must have been fired because if he had retired, that would have been clearly stated.

It's amazing that we've reached a point where Mark Few isn't even mentioned as a candidate for a high profile job like this. I feel like this year was the year that everybody realized that GU is a better job than almost every other school and that Coach Few isn't going anywhere.

I stopped worrying when Few said no to Oregon. Withers has a whole chapter on that in Glory Hounds, if there's anybody here who hasn't read that yet.

Replying to myself with this tweet from Dan Wolken of USA Today. Even more amazing that he is on a tier where it is a joke to even think he would consider it: https://twitter.com/DanWolken/status/871799406772838400

Yep. Arizona or Oregon were my two main concerns. His attachments to Oregon led me to believe he would take that job.

In today's world, plenty of people are "laid off", but kept on to train their replacements.

I know (somehow) people aren't fans of Mark Titus, but he wrote a great article on The Ringer today. He's a former walk-on at OSU, so he knows Matta personally.

Sorry Jazz, Roy was at KU from '88-'89 thru '02-'03. Since the vast majority of his first 17 years was not at the school w/ an academic scandal, I don't think a giant asterisk is required.

You're right. I misread it to say last 17 years....as per MF. Still, Ol Ray is a scandal waiting to happen and who sez he was honest Abe as KU.

True, but I don't remember even any hints of scandal while Roy was at KU. Self can't seem to keep his Jayhawk players from getting arrested.

I think they use it because there's no "University of Ohio" like the "University of Michigan" Ohio U is large, highly academic and public, but I have no idea why Ohio U is an after thought in sports.

So, to represent Ohio State's self-importance - as you note - they use the "The" to ...I don't know, it is weird. Almost as weird as Thad Matta being only 50. He seems like a nice man, with the right priorities. Maybe that's why he had to go. Weird.

Seems like one could be immensely incompetent, but the only measure is 11-13 wins, isn't it?
