    Zag's NCAA media exposure

    (from this A.M.'s Spokesman-Review)

As the Bulldogs advanced to the NCAA championship, Gonzaga University got a staggering amount of broadcast and online exposure. The value of the coverage exceeded $400 million, university officials say.
    But we don't play nobody.

"All the publicity appears to be helping Gonzaga recruit students: Early inquiries from prospective students for the 2018-19 academic year are up by 10,000 compared to a year ago, officials said."

It would be cool if it helped recruit basketball players too...

True but could also be a function of country's demography, relative ease of filing an application and the fact that faced with a life altering $200,000 plus decision prospective students and their families are now applying to more schools than ever; to compare FA packages for one reason. Back in the day 6-8 apps were considered a lot, now 10-20 is more routine. That artificially inflates number of inquiries and apps all colleges receive. Colleges are challenged to qualify the inquiries and also process only those apps that can be considered serious; and accept a surplus of students to allow for certain attrition of so called accepts. Tough business.

Without knowing all the facts this appears to be very good news for Gonzaga. When the Economy is good and unemployment is low, college applications go down and small expensive private liberal arts Universities are usually the hardest hit...

Applications at schools like Whitman, Reed, Columbia are down, even the Air Force and Naval Academies with no tuition are down as well as relatively inexpensive schools like BYU ...

For a different reason, applications from foreign students are way down....Dartmouth has seen a drop of 30%....Engineering students from the Middle East and India and China are down..sad

the unemployment rate is currently 4.4%. The lowest its been since 2006.

while D.C. 'appears' to be a mess, the economy is humming right along.

Home sales are also at an all-time high, been over a decade since home purchases have been this hot.

BYU apps are down because teens are fleeing the LDS church in droves. It's going to be interesting to see what will happen over the next decade or two.

Actually, applications to BYU and BYU-Idaho continue to grow. There was one year when applications were down; it in 2013 - the year after the church announced the change in missionary age (from 19 to 18 for men and from 21 to 19 for women). Many of the kids who would have been applying to BYU or BYU-Idaho instead went on a mission right out of high school, and applied to college for when they returned from their mission. Other than that one year, applications have increased steadily. Don't count on BYU shrinking.

                    BYU:
