....and can we get a little love for MEATBALLS??

"It just doesn't matter...it just doesn't matter...". Still the most inspirational speech ever given in western cinema.

For pure satire, Stripes. We're 10 and 1.
For pure thought provoking, Groundhog Day. No other of his flicks have entered the cultural zeitgeist as much.

Lost In Translation

Good movie but felt a bit flat, and Scarlett looked too young for that role. Earned him his only Oscar nomination, though.

Is there a movie where he is just crying and miserable the whole time? If not, I hope to start production on one this Saturday. Joe Piscopo and Mia Sorvino are already onboard!

Gotta be Caddyshack, although an argument could be made that it's not a "Bill Murray" movie, just a movie with Bill Murray in it. It's one of those movies where you're turning the channels and you come across it, and it just sucks you in even though you've seen it a million times. It's a collection of great scenes and great characters full of great quotes.

My first GF lived in Sheepshead Bay. You may be on to something, Beez.

Stripes. While filming at Fort Knox, Bill Murray got a root canal done by one of the Ft. Knox Dentac endodontists.

Groundhog Day.

A rare, unique acting performance he simply nails.

Because of Murray's everyman look and nature, his transformations from ne'er do well to thoughtful human being are especially poignant. This kind of development really works in Groundhog Day, but Scrooged is another good example.

Also, too, all the Wes Anderson implementations. :-)

Any idea who the endodontist was? Just curious as I was in the Army Dental Corps in the eighties.

Phish, I got an X-mas present this year - a book about all the Wes Anderson movies. It's awesome.

You guys have forgotten about Bills early work in B movies like this one, "Hercules" easily my favorite.

Lost in Translation. Gets funnier every time I see it. Or maybe it's funnier because I'm older.

It's hilarious. Of course, I think Richard Dreyfuss is the funnier of the two.

BTW, nice topic Bob. Reminds me of the old days on the board.

While you probably think I would vote Caddyshack, Stripes and Groundhog's Day, I'm a Lost in Translation guy. Even though Caddyshack lines are part of my day to day conversations. Even though Stripes inspired me to mount a regulation hoop in the family room, only to be overruled by Mrs. B who said, and I quote: "I'm not a big Pottery Barn fan, but I will be damned if Dick's Sporting Goods is going to decorate my home." Oh well, a guy can dream.

Sure, you think it's just about the opening sequence and not about the quality of the film:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hyOSuFBS7IA

even though it's a rip-off of a SnapCo ad.

It's really about one scene. Birddog and I were at the Coppola winery in NorCal. Bird was pretty sussed and getting chatty with one of the staff. Sofia, who was pouring, seemed kind of artsy and actually interested in one of Bird's tall tales, one about his junket to Japan for SnapCo. Well, the family version showed up in Lost in Translation. LOL.

Bonus points for that clip. It begins with Bill talking to a monkey. Quite fitting for this game.

Oh, and I have always had a thing for this Roxy Music tune.

So now you know.

+1 MTZag03 you are and will forever be my hero. All the other roles are overt comedy and his character in this so subtle, it takes about 3 or 4 viewings to get some of the finer points. The swim trunks, golf balls on table, etc. Also the basketball clip is tremendous.

Life Aquatic & Lost in Translation are two I'm fond of as well.

Never liked Groundhogs Day.

Ps. St Vincent was a good movie, barely recognized it was him.

I agree. He's a complex character and Bill just nailed it. Everyone who hasn't seen it should give it a shot.
