    Twas the Night Before the Sweet 16

    Twas the night before the game, when all thro’ the boards,
    Not a poster was posting, not even the GUB overlords;
    Their beer was cooling in the fridge with care,
    In hopes that Coach Few soon would be there;
    The posters were nestled all snug in their beds,
    While visions of Nigel’s sweet jumpers danc’d in their heads,
    And ZagNative in her ‘kerchief, and Spy in his cap,
    Had just settled their brains for a short March nap
    When out in San Jose there arose such a clatter,
    We sprang from our couches to see what was the matter.
    Away to the keyboard we flew like Meech,
    Poured ourselves a beverage, perhaps a Sex on the Beach.
    The dark was radiating from the SJ arena marquee aglow,
    Gave the lustre of mid-day to GU coaches and players below;
    When, what to our wondering eyes should appear,
    But a minature Zag jet, the Zags and an orange sphere,
    With a gentleman driver, so lively and true,
    We knew in a moment it must be Coach Few.
    More rapid than buckets his players they came,
    And he whistled, and shouted, and call’d them by name:
    “Now! Nigel, now! Jordan, now! Karno, and Rui,
    “On! Zach, on! Josh, on! Johnathan and Tillie;
    “To the top of the key and down the lane!
    “Now make your shots, layups, and free throws all!”
    As when the pressure is applied of the Virginia Press,
    The Zags don’t wait for the trap, or ponder or digress;
    So up and down the court dribbling the Zags flew,
    With a miniature Zag jet full of points - and Coaches Tommy and Donnie too:
    We saw the Zags were putting up points and the scoreboard they led
    Heck GU could go to the Elite 8 and even cover the spread.
    We drew in our heads, and leaned in toward the TV,
    Zags were in a huddle and Coach Few we could see:
    He was dress’d all in suit, from his head to his foot,
    And his tie was getting loose but not covered in soot;
    A whiteboard and marker were flung into his hands,
    And he look’d determined and the fans cheered from the stands:
    His eyes –sharpened, narrow, focused, like a hero in a thriller,
    Not nervous, wide, distracted like Sean Miller;
    Few discussed the play he had drawn up like a bow,
    And the whiteboard with the play was as white as the snow;
    The ref blew the whistle he held tight in his teeth,
    And the players encircled Few tight like a wreath.
    Few said “We will win. Just focus” with out a mumbling nervously
    “Believe me we can win. We aren’t here as a &$(*% courtesy!”
    The Zags took the court for the remaining few minutes,
    If they continued to play well, they would be ahead within the time limits;
    Nigel gave a wink, Josh gave a nod of his head
    Karno gave a thumbs up and Zach mouthed, “Let’s put them to bed”.
    GU Board posters were so nervous their sweat could fill up a deep pool
    Talking heads weren’t talking and Huggy fell off his stool.
    Zags took the ball down the court and passed it around
    With the shot clocking ticking as Nigel pounded it into the ground.
    Nigel moved left as Karno darted to set up a screen
    Johnathan was gaining position down low and WVU fans looked green.
    Nigel darted right, pumped fack, and fired a pass towards the hoop
    A second earlier Zach had leapt from the baseline for a classic alley oop.
    Zach caught the pass and jammed it hard for two points
    GU Board posters could hardly move as their bodies were on pinpoints.
    The Zags had won, Coach Few packed up his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew into the Zag jet and away, like the down of a thistle:
    But we all heard Coach Few exclaim as the Zag jet flew out of sight
    Happy Sweet 16 Game Day Eve and to all GU Board posters a good night.

    “No team in the country has a better winning percentage against power conference teams since 2017 than Gonzaga... the Zags are playing above average teams in the best leagues in the country and winning 78% of the time.”
