View Full Version : Looks like we're going to have to play the villian

if vandy doesn't come back in this game.

I hope our guys are ready for it and embrace the crowd not being in our favor in SLC again.

And it will be a hostile crowd fueled by more than Mountain Dew

Neither team is as good as St Mary's. I can't fathom losing to a team whose best player is McIntosh.

We will beat Northwestern by 20pts plus if we play them although I think Vanderbilt ends up beating them.

Even the way we played this morning? I dunno. Hostile crowd, struggling against a 16 seed..... having Deja Vu. :(

We are the better team, but we don't win 10 out of 10 times. Can't come close to guaranteeing a win. 75 percent chance would be my odds, maybe a little less after today's showing.

I feel extremely strong that we roll on Saturday regardless who we play. We shot terribly, worst all year, and still won by 20pts. It's not like we would be playing a top tier team, in fact we'd be playing a roughly middle of the pack major conference team. I think way too much was made of today's game to be honest.

McIntosh is a baller. And I'd venture to say NW is definitely better than BYU and St. Mary's would be a toss up

NW having the time of their lives with absolutely nothing to lose. Very dangerous imo - especially with us shooting poorly.

Ordinarily there'd be nothing I'd want more than a middle Big 10 team, this is different.

Nigel has to play better than he did today. NW is more conventional. Zags won't be facing 6-5 centers!

GU needs to start out hot and get the crowd out of the game. I am expecting a war, but based on what I saw, GU is flat out the better team. Remember....NW almost got beat by a near .500 SEC team with the whole crowd behind them.

Lots of Northwestern fans in SLC for the tournament. They were loud and proud today and I was seated amongst many of them. Our fans seem either nervous, entitled or apathetic. Can't figure it out.

Not even close. St. Mary's would wipe the floor with NW.

If we play like we did today then it will be close. I know we creamed St. Mary's in the WCC final, but in my opinion we have not looked like ourselves for the past couple of games. Not firing on all cylinders at the moment. If things aren't turned around, we're going to be in for an early exit whether that's next game or in the sweet sixteen.

This is why Few wanted the Sacramento subregional. I am sure most of the NW fans would still have come, but I am not sold on the locals turning on Gonzaga like the SLC crowd will because of the BYU factor.

I am now thinking that will work in our favor, actually.

Our biggest opponent is ourselves, playing timid, scared to win or lose. If we're up against Cinderella with 14,000 cheering them on, it at least gives our guys the freedom to just dig in and play. That sounds weird but feels right to me.

FiveThirtyEight has Zags at an EIGHTY EIGHT percent chance of winning Saturday. Have we ever seen those kinds of odds in a 2nd round game before?

Geez you guys....get over it and stop your crying and get used to the anti Zag crowds. We are now a national powerhouse so enjoy it....powerhouse teams are not underdogs. Ask the good teams how much the crowds hate them. Geez, this Sac or SLC BS is stupid. Our guys know the formula to quiet a crowd.....Shut 'um down and jump on 'em and stay ahead by 20. We would have gotten NO extra points because we played in Sacramento!!! By the way, the NW crowd got real quiet when Vandy came storming back this afternoon. HINT, HINT

Sounds like echo from 3 years ago.

It's all on the line every game. #1 seed or not.

Well put ZionZag. Not sure why this keeps coming up. As a #1 seed, you are the villain. The crowd always pulls for the underdog whether in SLC, Sacramento or wherever. Put on the big boy shorts and play like we are capable of & the crowd noise will take care of itself. I must admit however, I was at the game today and our fans were eerily quiet. I don't get that
part !

It seems that Few found the "Anti-One seed" thing to be a bit more sinister as applied to the Zags in Utah. Absolutely, we'd be cheered against in any venue. And, in most settings, one would think that fans of your "conference mates" might cheer you on. But, maybe there's a "BYU element" to that, too. I wonder if they boo'd SMC.

Well known fact here in Utah, most SLC folks are University of Utah people. They don't like BYU people. Not even a little bit.

Case in point, they were showing the crowd shots on the big screen during a time out yesterday and showed two young kids with BYU gear. The crowd immediately started booing.

Didn't even dawn on me, but most Ute fans are probably pretty sore about the beatdown Gonzaga put on them last year in the Tourney and certainly wouldn't be inclined to cheer for that same school now.

For anyone there in SLC, I'm curious about the Arizona contingent. They take over Las Vegas during the conference tourney much the way Gonzaga does.
