Morgan Receives National Honors

Named Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball and the WCC

March 13, 2017

SPOKANE, Wash.--Junior right-hander Eli Morgan's 15-K complete-game shutout Friday night has caught the attention of many on the national college baseball scene as the Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., native has garnered several awards from around the country.

Collegiate Baseball named Morgan one of its National Players of the Week. The organization honors 10 student-athletes who excelled over the last week's slate of games. This is Morgan's first national weekly honor.

USA Baseball selected Morgan as one of four finalists for the Golden Spikes Gold Standard Performance of the Week award. A vote will determine the winner of the honor, which will be announced Thursday, March 16. That poll is on the Golden Spikes Award's Twitter account: @USAGoldenSpikes.

The West Coast Conference named Morgan Rawlings/WCC Pitcher of the Week for the second consecutive week. This is the junior's fourth career conference weekly honor. He also was the conference's top pitcher March 6 after an 8.0-inning, 12-strikeout outing at California.

D1Baseball.com ranked Morgan as the top pitcher in its March 10 Stat Roundup. Morgan received a game score of 97, six points higher than any other pitcher on Friday night.

These honors all came after Morgan struck out a career-high 15 batters in a 1-0 shutout over No. 7/11 Cal State Fullerton March 10. He only allowed two hits and faced one three-ball count all game. The shutout was his first of the season and fourth of his career, and his 15 strikeouts equaled the second-highest tally by a Bulldog pitcher since at least 2008.

Morgan and the rest of the Gonzaga baseball team are back in action tonight, March 14, with a 6:00 p.m. game at Cal Poly. Links to live stats and video for that game may be found at www.GoZags.com.
