Morgan Named WCC/Rawlings Pitcher of the Week

Fanned a career-high 12 batters for first win at Cal

March 6, 2017

SAN BRUNO, Calif.—After striking out a career-high 12 batters March 3, Gonzaga right-hander Eli Morgan earned West Coast Conference/Rawlings Pitcher of the Week honors Monday as announced by the conference office.

Morgan used a three-pitch mix to great effect last Friday against Cal, posting his highest career strikeout total and the most by a WCC pitcher this season. The Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., native allowed just one run on three hits during his seven innings of work, also season bests. Eight of the junior’s 12 strikeouts came in the first three innings, and Morgan also retired the final seven batters he faced for his first win of the season. The Zags went on to beat the Bears 5-2 before splitting the four-game series.

With the stellar outing, Morgan moved up to second in the conference and 25th in the nation with 26 strikeouts on the year. The Bulldogs are 2-1 in games Morgan has started this season.

This is the first weekly honor for Morgan this season, but he twice earned Pitcher of the Week awards in 2016.

Morgan and the rest of the Gonzaga baseball team are back in action Friday, March 10, at Cal State Fullerton. First pitch against the #7/12 Titans is slated for 7:00 p.m.
