Yet another recycled coach. He'll probably get hired at another high major school while Randy Bennett doesn't even get a phone call.

Saw an article earlier today (forget where) that had Gottfried on the "hot seat" along with Thad Matta, Tom Crean, John Thompson III & LoRo (though they thought he was probably safe due to the recruiting class he had coming in).

Gottfried was fairly successful upon first arriving at NC State, but they've been down trending. That's a tough job. You're always gonna be behind UNC and Duke in the pecking order. Seems like they went for a home run hire last time and got played by several potential candidates just to get a raise at their current job. Who are they gonna get to come to Raleigh? Seems like they haven't really been satisfied w/ any coach they've had there since Valvano.

Those other hot seat coaches sittington listed all were quite successful at one point. Coaching is a really tough business. What have you done for me lately?

The NC State area radio stations are all saying Archie Miller as the possible replacement. However much NC State has screwed up their previous coaching searches, they can at least say this to their candidates this go around: Roy Williams and Coach K aren't going to be around that much longer. That was the single thing that got Herb Sendek run out of town. The fans didn't care how many NCAA tournaments Sendek directed the Wolfpack to....they cared about his record vs. UNC and Duke.

The coaching landscape has really changed the last five to six years. BCS programs are reluctant to pay for huge contract buy outs, and more and more non-BCS coaches just don't want to coach at some middle of the pack BCS school. I mean, Archie is not making the money at Dayton that he would make at NC State, but he's making a bunch, and he'll never be fired at Dayton. Why would Archie want to move unless it's to a place where he's certain he could win it all?? Then again, Archie is a NC State grad. I wouldn't be surprised if NC State goes hard after Archie.

Archie would be a logical target for them to start with.

You're right, the landscape has changed. There have been so many flash in the pan coaches at mid majors that jumped to higher profile jobs and crashed and burned. There have been some success stories, but more the exception than the rule. Smart finally left VCU but he passed on quite a few jobs and he might be regretting the move to Texas already (and his predecessors Grant and Capel didn't do so well at BCS/Power 5 schools either). Marshall certainly has had many opportunities to move "up" from Wichita St. and seems to be content there so far. We all know Few could've left GU at various different points for more high profile jobs and didn't. Will be interesting to see how Underwood does at Okie St.
