The Bulldogs (23-0, 11-0 West Coast Conference) now have the longest winning streak in school history. They entered the night with the No. 12 scoring offense in the nation and looked like it.

Gonzaga took a 42-26 lead after dominating the first half. The Bulldogs used a 20-4 stretch early to put BYU in a deep hole.

T.J. Haws did the heavy lifting during the BYU rally, as the Cougars got within six at one point, and finished with 26 points.

The Cougars (16-8, 7-4) had no answer early for the 7-foot-1, 300-pound Przemek Karnowski. Gonzaga ran the offense through the big man while building a 17-point lead and BYU was left to pick its poison. Karnowski would drop in a hook when left 1-on-1 against a defender, before the Cougars started sending help. Then Karnowski would kick it out and the Zags repeatedly found open shooters for 3-pointers.

BYU was supposed to challenge No. 1 Gonzaga on Thursday. Students slept in tents for three nights to reserve the best seats. The Marriott Center was packed with nearly 19,000 fans, the Cougars’ first sellout of the season.

And after a rough first half, the Cougars did exactly that. They put heat on Gonzaga throughout the closing 20 minutes. The crowd reached ear-splitting volume levels.

None of it ruffled Nigel Williams-Goss. The junior guard put the top-ranked Zags on his shoulders and carried them to the finish line as Gonzaga held off the Cougars 85-75.

He said it was so loud he couldn’t hear himself think, but he soaked up the noise, the energy and put on a show in the final 15 minutes.

“It’s fun, it’s what you live for,” Williams-Goss said. “We knew it wasn’t going to be easy coming in, not in this building. We just had to stay together. We consider ourselves a really tight-knit group and in environments like this it pays off.”

Vince Grippi's "TV Take" Column: http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2017/feb/02/tv-take-gonzaga-passes-latest-test-announcers-offi/

Nigel Williams-Goss did just about everything for the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Thursday night in Provo. Thirty-three points. Seven rebounds. Four assists. Solid defense.

And that’s not all. He also helped out ESPN.

After the Zags had survived BYU’s upset effort, 85-75, the junior transfer summed up the game as well as any of the five folks the network had working the ESPN2 broadcast.

“We finally got tested,” Williams-Goss said from Provo during a postgame interview with Adnan Virk, stationed back in the Bristol studios. “It’s been awhile since we were in a close battle like this.”

The test came in many forms, from the 18,987 raucous fans, who seemed to feel the Cougars never committed a foul, to the officiating trio, who seemed to agree with them after intermission, through BYU’s spirited second-half effort.

And those sitting at home were tested as well, dealing with all of the above, as well as listening to play-by-play man Eric Rothman and analyst Adrian Branch.

In front of the largest crowd either team has seen this season, 18,987, the Zags played comfortably and in control the entire first half, and BYU showed its inexperience and lack of depth. That led to a 42-26 lead at halftime for Gonzaga, and the Zags held off a couple of Cougar runs in the second half to win fairly comfortably.

It was Gonzaga's 15th-straight win by double-digits, but the Cougars made the Zags work for it after falling behind by as many as 19 points in the first half.

Williams-Goss took over in the second half after the Cougars had cut the deficit to 45-37. The Washington transfer scored 11 straight points for his team as Gonzaga pushed its lead to 58-40 with 12:50 remaining.

Associated Press Game Story: http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/recap?gameId=400915857I liked this from the AP story:

Williams-Goss took over in the second half as BYU cut the lead to single digits. The junior point guard scored 11 straight points while blowing past defenders during a 13-3 run to push the lead back to 18 points. He had the answer every time BYU got close and was three points shy of his season high.

"He's a ferocious competitor," Few said. "He's confident. He's mentally tough. He'll be the first one to tell you he wasn't' playing good, especially in that first half. That just shows you how tough and clutch (he is).

"The kid's just a winner. He's just a flat-out winner. Obviously, this is when you need him, on a big stage in a really, really tough environment when we're hitting a bunch of adversity.

Blanchette: Gonzaga’s men ignore wild atmosphere, pass first test as top-ranked team in nation (http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2017/feb/02/blanchette-gonzagas-men-ignore-wild-atmosphere-pas/)

The Zags have been the game’s ultimate ensemble all season, but there’s no doubt that in the last few weeks the junior guard has established himself as the Go-To Guy among all the go-to guys. The affirmation came this night.

Once the Cougars – down 19 points late in the first half, and 17 early in the second – reeled off nine straight points to pull inside of 10 points, Williams-Goss put it in overdrive.

He scored nine straight points in a stretch of 98 seconds. He scored 24 of Gonzaga’s last 32. He drilled a long 3-pointer when BYU had again cut the lead to eight points with 4:50 left, and a runner at the 3:00 mark that suggested, “Enough.”

At one point, when a fan courtside bobbled a box of popcorn and the spillage stopped play, Williams-Goss grabbed the broom from the arena worker and helped tidy up.

He pops the popcorn. He cleans it up. Alas, there was no sighting of him selling the stuff at halftime.

BYU grounded by Williams-Goss, top-ranked Gonzaga
By Sean Walker
....
First sellout of the season

The Marriott Center shelled out for the first-ever top-ranked visit in the site’s history with 18,987 fans in attendance for the 9 p.m. MT tipoff that was broadcast on ESPN2.

“That was a super fun game,” Haws said. “I couldn’t help but smile when I heard the crowd get that loud. I thought the energy was great tonight, and I thought our team showed spurts of greatness … It was a fun atmosphere, but it’s a bummer to lose.”

The game was the first sellout of the 2016-17 season for BYU, and the first since Gonzaga’s last trip to Provo, last year’s regular-season finale on Feb. 27, 2016.

“It was great. It was awesome,” Rose said. “You could tell from the minute we walked out there that the crowd was ready to cheer for this team.

“It just didn’t go our way.”

Przemek grounded

Karnowski played just 23 minutes while picking up foul trouble, and finished with just nine points, eight rebounds and five turnovers.

Mika served as the primary defender on the 7-foot, 300-pound big man, but Corbin Kaufusi, Childs and even Bryant factored into slowing down one of the top post players in college basketball.

“Give credit to our bigs. But anyone who is a really good basketball player, it takes a team effort to guard,” Haws said. “Elijah did a really good job helping on him, and we helped off him. It was a great effort tonight.”

Nice piece.

Worthy? You know damn right.

One of my favorite parts of that article is found within comments section where several posters mention ANY team in the Big 12 would beat the Zags by 15 or more…and it was liked…by many. This stuff makes me LOL these days.

Haha - didn't the Zags already beat a Big 12 team in Iowa St. this season?

Also, since the 2010-11 season, the Zags have gone 11-3 vs. Big 12 teams (including the tourney)

Rothman not so bad, Branch unbearable.

Blanchette has got that right. Branch sounded like a BYU cheerleader last night. He kept talking about how BYU was getting open looks on almost every possession. Really? I will admit that GU lost track of Haws a few times, but other that, there was a reason why BYU shot badly from the field (and especially the 3 pt. line).

"The Last Amateurs" by Feinstein is a great read chronicling the Patriot League.

Since it was published the league has gone all scholarship sadly. Now it's just another low tier conference. Feinstein still reveres the teams and did color until recently. Members are academic powerhouses.
