View Full Version : Karno's missed shot or assist?

When Karno drove and put that ball high off the glass as he was going out of bounds, and a trailing Matthews put it in, I was sure that Karno knew exactly what he was doing, that he didn't shoot, and that he purposely layed it up there for a possible trailer.

I watched the replay very closely then watched it twice again, and I remained convinced that was the case. The Spokesman has a pix showing Matthews scoring. The caption says that he followed up Karno' missed shot. I say he didn't shoot! I say give Karno an ASSIST!

Thoughts/Opinions? Any way to find out if Karno was credited with an assist?

I think he threw up a prayer hoping to get to the free throw line

Didn't watch it again, but saw the replay right after it happened and thought that an LMU player just grabbed Karno's arm and it was all he could do to throw it up toward the basket...

If it was a prayer, it was a smart one. Karno was just in a bad place on the floor to get a decent shot off. I am sure he was looking for a foul, but in a situation like that, if your guys are playing right, there is going to be an offensive player trailing on the play. He's got as good of a chance of snagging the ball off the backboard as anyone.

I thought it was an assist. Karnowski loves flashy passes and he knows exactly when to pull one. He was going out of the bounds and the only option he had was to try shooting or try to pass. Shooting options were limited to a circus shot a'la Booker (video below) or passing it. He found the best way to score on this posession.

Ah, heck. Perkins got an assist on his, Karno should get an assist, too.

It appeared to me that Karno's arm was grabbed by an LMU player and he threw it up hoping for a foul.

Birddog - couldn't make your link work. hopefully this one does
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LwUnE5v92Uc .... about 50 seconds in. #24 Shamir Johnson clearly grabs Karno's arm.

Thanks Birddog and Bocco! Local TV went with "possibly an accidental assist." Strike "possibly" and "accidental." Bingo!

Looked to me like he was off balance/maybe being bumped and couldn't control the ball and maintain balance, so he threw the ball off the backboard to keep it in play, hoping a teammate would get there to get it. I doubt it was a deliberate pass intended for Matthews, but a smart play and the best he could do under the circumstances nonetheless. Assist? Gray area. I'd have to see the precise wording of the definition, but I lean toward no.

Smart play for sure.....regardless.

That sounds like a good movie title. "The Accidental Assist."
