View Full Version : If Gonzaga Was An Actor, Who Would They Be?

The Dukes, Kentuckys, UNCs and Kansases of the hoops world are the Tom Cruises, Leonardi DiCaprios, Humphrey Bogarts and Christian Bales of showbiz. So, who would you equate to Gonzaga?

I'll say:

James Arness

A hugely popular and successful TV star who never quite made it to the biggest stage.

Great thread. I would say Lee Marvin. Dependable and underrated. You know when he is in the movie, he will make it better.

I was thinking Lee Marvin but he did win an Oscar. Zags aren't there yet.

As a closet Sandler fan, I resent that remark.
I'm gonna go with Leonardo DiCaprio, actually. Amazing performances for two decades before winning an Oscar. I'm optimistic.

Gotta be Kevin Bacon. He hasn't won the big prize, but he's played everyone. Besides, he looks like Mark Few's twin.

I was also thinking of Rodney Dangerfield, but that's probably a better fit for Saint Mary's.

I'd say Kevin Costner - you know, been around for quite awhile and in some good movies, but nobody nationally wants to publicly acknowledge that.

Ed Harris. Well respected, long career, four time Oscar nominee but never a winner. Can excel in either a leading role or as a supporting player.

I'll go with one of our own, singer/actor Bing Crosby. A silky smooth, consistent star spanning generations.

Gene Hackman. Always working, consistent. Some good, some bad, some excellent. Plus, Hoosiers! The all-time basketball Cinderella story (which actually happened)! The French Connection -- always hustling and in pursuit, knocked down on & gets back up (and a nod to Tillie). I could go on, but it might be more fun to let others add, and finish.:clap:

Bob, was walking in Santa Monica the day after Thanksgiving and came upon two men engaged in what looked like a meaningful conversation. One gave me the impression he was homeless - the other was Christian Bale.

Dick Powell. A one time pretty boy crooner who turned in one of the best performances of Spade in Murder My Sweet. Bit of an overachiever, but shone brightly when essential.

I'd go with DiCaprio.

GU and DiCaprio...

Both relevant for roughly 20 years before winning the prize relevant to them, came very close several times.

This season is to GU what the filming of The Revenant was for DiCaprio. Wait until late March -- you'll see what I mean.

Gonzaga is Ben Affleck. A-list, but not Tom Cruise/Caprio level (Kansas/Kentucky). Talented in front of the camera (players on the court) and behind the scenes (Few and coaching staff). Got an oscar for writing and directing (Few's accolades), but every time he gets a big time role (This is the Final Four year! Promise! I'm freaking Batman!) he somehow comes up short. But you have this feeling eventually he's going to get his due.

By the way, this makes St. Mary's Casey Affleck. Formerly a sidekick riding older brother's coattails (Good Will Hunting) occasionally scene stealing (2011 Sweet 16 run). Now becoming a legitimate actor in his own right, possibly more talented than big bro, but doesn't get the A-list recognition because of the lack of high profile roles (the schedule thing).

Oh, and Andy Katz is obviously Matt Damon. BYU is J-Lo.

RenoZag

St. Mary's is Harvey Keitel. Recognizable yet undervalued, undersized ( 5' 7") yet dominating. He's a mensch and so are the Gaels.

Nobody ever really wanted to fight George. The guy could flat take you out.

Woody Harrelson, people might have thought that his career would stall after his run as the gullible but lovable bartender ended at Cheers when the series ended, but then he turned into a consistent performer year after year.

I thought the question was who we were, not what we needed. :)

We "need" some Harrison Ford in the Indiana Jones series, gets your heart racing, but always brings back the trophy.

Winston Churchill, not an actor, but he was highly decorated and respected, distinguished himself in battle ("we shall never surrender") and showed his greatness by being frequently photographed with a bulldog. :-)

For the Gaels........Crocodile Dundee.

My vote goes to Robert Duvall, he excels in every role. If he played for the Zags, he would do it all, no matter what offense or defense we're running.
