Rockets assign kyle to the D-League (temporarily, hopefully), where he's been setting it on fire, last night with 26 points 2 assists, and 3 rebounds.

Isn't it funny how he can't score if he isn't in the game. Hopefully the Rockets notice.

Is he that much better than everyone else on the court or is the D-League just that bad?

He looks just super and if he gets called up, then they need to let him play more than mop up minutes.

Bad news for Kyle. Motiejunas will be staying with the Rockets after they matched the Nets' offer sheet Monday afternoon. Bobby Brown will be waived to create the roster spot needed for Motiejunas. So looks like Kyle sort of stays with the Rockets organization but more likely he will spend most of his time in the D-League this year.

It could also be a good thing. Instead of playing a couple minutes here and there for the Rockets, he can fully concentrate on playing for the RGV. Good thing that he has a contract with the Rockets as opposed to being signed by the D-League team though. Those D-League salaries are extremely small even in comparison to average European club salaries.

Absolutely - we are talking $20-30K salary in the D-league right now. Peanuts compared to what similar players can get in Europe/China. Next year they are supposedly making changes to the D-League. Bumping up salary to about $70-90K (not huge but still something), allowing two way contracts and allowing 3 affiliated players to NBA teams. So more opportunities for players to get similar contracts to Kyle's. We will see the D a little more like minor league baseball and hockey. There will be more freedom for guys to move up and down and more incentive for NBA to try to develop young peripheral guys. They will keep more players stateside for a little longer attempting to groom them up into the NBA.

I didn't know this, but that's great news. That'd at least be a living salary in most places in the US, where the 20-30 isn't really.

Apparently, DMo didn't show up for his Rocket physical and doesn't intend to. It seems like he doesn't want to play for the Rockets anymore. Kyle better be ready.

Could it be that he's working on his release trying to make it even quicker? That release at 0:08 seemed really fast. I don't remember him shooting this quick at Gonzaga, but maybe I'm just imagining things.

Kyle Wiltjer Goes for 40 Points in Vipers’ Win at Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (23-14) overcame a 14-point deficit to pour it on the fourth quarter and beat the Grand Rapids Drive (20-18) on the road on Saturday night. The final was 136-122 as the Vipers dropped 48 points in the fourth quarter to just 27 for the Drive.

The Drive came into the game as the hottest team in the D-League, having won eight of their last nine, and they looked on their way to adding to that as they were in control for the majority of the game. But things got out of hand quickly in the fourth and Rio Grande Valley found a gear the Drive just could not match.

The Vipers had struggled with some sluggish play earlier in the game, and were constantly in conversation with the officials early in the game, racking up an impressive nine technical fouls in the game. But this may have fired them up, as by the end of the game nothing was stopping them from getting this win.

Kyle Wiltjer had a career night for the Vipers, pouring in 40 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. He made seven three-pointer on 19 attempts, helping Rio Grande Valley hoist 43 attempts as a team (both teams were 15-of-43 from three). Wiltjer’s 40 points was the largest point total the Drive have surrendered to an individual player this season, the previous tally being 33 by Abdel Nader in the Drive’s third game of the year.

I think he is putting up pretty good stats in the D-League. Perhaps stats indicative of a NBA caliber player.
http://stats.nbadleague.com/player/#!/1627787/stats/

Most interesting is they are really throwing the minutes at him (36 per game) and high usage. He seems the focal point of the team when he is playing. It look like Houston is really trying to develop him and give him a shot. Summer league will be interesting this year.

RGV vs D-Fenders in the deciding semi-final game tonight. I may go check it out and cheer KW on.

Just for perspective, you can play like that in the D League and rarely sniff the floor in the NBA. The gap in talent level between D league and the Association is huge and the D League is full of top NCAA players ala Kyle.

I have no idea what players like Kyle make playing in the D League....but I understand the new NBA Agreement calls for raising the D league salaries to $50-75K....so that could push the overseas salaries higher....competition is good...

Kyle's salary is paid for by the Rockets who then "farm" him out to their subsidiary the Vipers.. IIRC, he signed for some where in the neighborhood of 250 to 300K. Houston has a plethora of sharpshooters so Kyle is held in reserve.

Oh I agree. But the point I was making is that guys who do make the NBA from the D tend to put up very good stats in the D. It doesn't mean he will make it though. Just he is showing the stuff of guys who often do make it.

However, if he was putting up rather meek, unimpressive performances in the D, I would be quite confident saying he just isn't getting to the NBA.

If not the NBA - he should play at a pretty high level in Europe. At least a Eurocup level team...maybe Euroleague with Daye and Pangos.

Correct me if I am wrong but I thought he signed for the league minimum of $400K+, which is why he took this gig so that he would be part of the NBA team.

You are both sorta right. League minimum for a rookie this year was about $540K (jumps up to ~900K for 2nd year players).
That's what they get when in the NBA - officially on an NBA roster (and pro-rated to their time on the team. However, Kyle has spent much of the year in the D-League. Thus why it is officially announced (recalled from/assigned to) when he goes back and forth to the D. And why it matters.

The D-league minimum is like $13K for a "C" player. Kyle would be an "A" type player guaranteed $26K. But quite the difference with the NBA, eh? And you'd be pretty pissed when sent down to the D-league going from a salary of $540 to $19K. So what Kyle and many young borderline guys like him do is sign a minimum guaranteed contract so he will get X amount no matter how much time he is with the D league (but would still collect the higher salary when with the Rockets).

I don't think it was ever disclosed exactly what his minimum guarantee was, but I recall it being something in the 275K range in the 1st year, with the 2nd year of the contract at the Rocket's option. The interesting part is that it goes up to ~$1.3M or so in Year 2 and the trigger date for the Rocket's to decide on that is July 12, 2017. That will be a key date for KW!

Now there is a rule about spending a certain amount of days on the NBA teams roster, you end up getting the guaranteed NBA minimum amount. The CBA is fairly complicated, and I am not sure the specifics of that rule. But Kyle could have qualified for the full $540K league minimum by being with the team in January 2017. I am not sure about that though. Find me a CBA expert!

So in short this season he made somewhere between $275K and $540K.

I think at least year 1 is accurate. On further research, since he was still with the Rockets organization on January 10, 2017 his Year 1 then became fully guaranteed at the league minimum of $540K.

I see different sources showing his year 2 as ~$900K or ~$1.3M. And that one kicks in as guaranteed if he is not waived by the Rockets before July 12, 2017.

So I think July 1 is the deadline for the Rockets to decide to waive Wiltjer or sign him for Year 2. I think he'd be in line for the 2nd year league minimum of around $1.7 million per year.
The CP3 trade today may have opened up roster sports for Wiltjer - so it will be interesting.

There is a chance they waive him and sign him to one of the new two-way G league contracts.

Let me know if anyone hears anything.
