Here's a fun piece from the San Diego Union Tribune (http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/sports/aztecs/sd-sp-azhoopsweb-20161114-story.html):

Gonzaga takes SDSU to the woodshed

f the handmade cardboard sign by the Gonzaga student who camped three days outside McCarthey Athletic Center in rainy, 40-degree weather is prophetic, then the poor kid is going to have some explaining to do to his parents footing the tuition bill.

SDSU is going down like my GPA.

There was no Kennel magic, no Spokane mystique, for the Aztecs on Monday night, where they suffered the same indignity that pretty much every visiting team does in this caldron of noise and red.

They lost.

Their largest margin of defeat in the last nine seasons – or 260 games – was 26 points at New Mexico in 2009. They were down 30 midway through the second half Monday and fell 69-48, suddenly becoming the team that they vowed they wouldn’t this season – the one that can’t shoot and looked genuinely befuddled against a basic 2-3 zone.

The Daily Aztech (http://www.thedailyaztec.com/80207/sports/aztecs-drop-the-ball-against-the-bulldogs-69-48/)

Almost 6 years to the day, a nationally unknown San Diego State men’s basketball team busted onto the national stage with a road win over No. 11-ranked Gonzaga University. Those Aztecs ultimately went 34-3 and made the program’s first Sweet 16 appearance.

Fast-forward to tonight and SDSU found itself in a similar position to re-legitimize themselves, after missing the NCAA tournament last year, as they returned to Spokane, Wash. However, the Aztecs couldn’t muzzle the Bulldogs twice and were chased out of “The Kennel,” as No. 14 Gonzaga dominated an underman SDSU squad, 69-48.

After a 3:33 minute stretch to begin the match without a single point highlighted on the scoreboard, SDSU ran out to a 6-2 lead in less than a minute. However, after three easy layups in the paint, Gonzaga switched to a 2-3 zone and the Aztecs’ porous shooting night began.

With length that rivals any Aztec squad under head coach Steve Fisher, the Bulldogs closed driving and interior passing lanes. But that didn’t mean SDSU didn’t try its luck.

The Aztecs shot 16-for-56, including 5-for-21 on 3-pointers, and had 15 turnovers.

Sophomore guard Jeremy Hemsley and junior guard Trey Kell, who combined for 48 points against University of San Diego, finished with 28 points on 9 of 29 shooting and had seven turnovers between them.

The guard duo, and the rest of the team, showed flashbacks to last season’s squad that made routine stretches of scoring droughts. The Bulldogs held SDSU without a field goal for six-minutes without a field goal to end the half on an 11-4 run.

John Blanchette: Future looks bright for Gonzaga with play of young Bulldogs (http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2016/nov/14/future-looks-bright-with-play-of-young-gonzaga-bul/)

“We lost to a team,” said Aztecs coach Steve Fisher, “that’s – I’ll repeat – really, really, really, really, really good.”

That’s the second five-really assessment from an opposing coach already this year, if you’re scoring. Which is more than the Aztecs could do.

Now, this is probably no time for a basketball team to be impressed with itself, so the Zags will hold that in abeyance.

“We won’t see how much it pays off until later,” said senior guard Jordan Mathews. “But coach just said they’re going to be a 25-win team and probably win the Mountain West, and to beat them like we did shows we can beat anybody.

“We just have to play.”

And that’s exactly what it looked like – play. There was an uncommon energy and joy not unlike Saturday at the park – kids from different neighborhoods figuring out how to win with each other. Just with better organization.

Not that it didn’t take a while.

Marathons are all about stamina, and for a spell it seemed as if the Zags and Aztecs might put in 26 miles up and down the court before they made a shot.

Soon enough, Gonzaga figured it out – though they had to bring two freshmen big men, Zach Collins and Killian Tillie, off the bench to do it. Then Mathews heated up – he would score 17 points, on 5-of-7 shooting from the arc – and the plot was as thick as it was going to get.

Gonzaga Bulletin (http://www.gonzagabulletin.com/sports/article_a57dd388-ab06-11e6-9d4c-83569123d90d.html)- Five takeaways from Gonzaga's win over San Diego State

Collins finished with 15 points and eight rebounds.

Along with Tillie, who finished with eight points and 10 rebounds, Few said he's challenged both of the freshman bigs bring energy off the bench, something they did exceptionally against SDSU.

"At times we have a bit of a stoic group and we've been on both of those guys to bring it," Few said. "Zach Collins we kind of have to bring it out. Killian just plays like that. When he plays basketball he just goes for it."

Tillie had eight points and 10 rebounds in the Zags’ 69-48 win over the Aztecs.
