INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Gonzaga men’s soccer program is ranked No. 20 in the latest version of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) NCAA Division I Men’s Poll, released Tuesday. This marks the first time the Bulldogs have been ranked in the NSCAA Poll, which has been listed under the that name since in 2011. GU was unranked the week prior and received 110 points in the poll, and are one of only 11 unbeaten teams in the top-20.

The Zags are off to a scorching start with a 5-0-1 record, including wins over then No. 16 Seattle University, 4-2 at home, and 3-1 over then No. 20 American in Washington, D.C. last week. The Bulldogs capped their East Coast trip with a 2-1 win over George Mason on Sunday, led in comeback fashion with goals from Christo Michaelson and Ben White.

Head coach Einar Thorarinsson's squad is led in goals by Jakob Granlund and Denis Kalamar at two, which ranks fourth in the West Coast Conference. Colton Cavey, Granlund, Ben White, and Austin Giftopoulos all have recorded two assists, good for second in the WCC. In goal, Ben Willis is third in the conference with 18 saves. Giftopoulos and Cavey have already been voted WCC Player of the Week this year.

The Zags lead the conference in points at 7.33 per game, goals at 2.50 per game, and assists at 2.33 per game. They are the only unbeaten team left in the WCC.

The Zags were last ranked in the NCAA Poll in September of 2007, at 25th in the Soccer America poll, which also marked the season of their last NCAA Tournament appearance.

Ranked right above the Zags at the No. 19 spot is Utah Valley, the Zags opponent this Thursday. The game is set for 4 pm PST in Orem, Utah.

OREM, Utah - The No. 20 Gonzaga Bulldogs suffered their first defeat of the season and were shutout for the first time, as they fell to No. 19 Utah Valley in Orem, Utah on Thursday evening.

The difference came in the 23rd minute as Aaron Meyer scored his first goal of the year. He took a free kick from the top of the box and guided it into the left corner.

The Zags battled in shots, with Utah Valley taking the 14-13 edge, but GU was unable to get a shot on goal, and the Wolverines fired four including the game-winner. Ben Willis made three saves in goal for GU and the Zags had two corner kick opportunities.

"Utah Valley was a good team playing at home with a solid fan base for their homecoming," head coach Einar Thorarinsson said. "The game was close and well played, the difference was just one free kick that found the left side. You always want to win, but I am happy with how we played and how we approached the game."

Jalen Crisler, Nick Ulowetz, and Isaiah Jackson all fired early shots for the Zags before UVU's early goal. Gonzaga's best first-half chance came at 33:41 when Crisler's header bounced off the crossbar.

The Zags had two late chances blocked as the first half clock expired. Graison Le missed wide at 59:52 and Jakob Granlund fired wide in the 81st minute for GU's best chances in the second frame.

Gonzaga will travel to Southern California to face UC Riverside at 11 a.m. this Sunday, September 18, as they look to return to their winning ways.

Ugh. Tough weekend for the Zags. Dropped a road game to UC Riverside, too.
