Maybe it's just me but that seems to be considerably lower than we (and many others) consider them deserving.

A scary thought about this years cougars is they might actually play defense....like the Minions of Moraga some have been teammates for years before college....experience and familiarity improves TEAM play... and this will be a very talented BYU team...should not be out of it in any game win or lose....IMO fair ranking 30-40...and if they play to potential could be top 25 by conference....it's actually possible the WCC could have 3 teams in the top 25 by conference time...

Don't know if this has already been posted...

Whether this the year WCC teams do some damage in OOC play or not it will be an all out war in the WCC....

Just my opinion..

Go!! Zags!!!

My educated hunch is the BYU will be a bubble team for most of the season with an RPI somewhere around 40-50 by Selection Sunday. They have some excellent new talent, but nothing that obviously offsets the loss of Collinsworth and Fischer. They always seem to play up and down to their level of competition. They'll pick up a great win against Gonzaga or St. Mary's and then drop a couple of games to middle-tier WCC teams. They seem to be destined to play in the "First Four" game almost every year.

I agree that No. 77 is too low.

As mentioned previously, BYU is clearly better than #77. The real question is their ability to gel as a team, and beat GU. They have some deadeye shooters and a very formidable PF in Mika. In order to make the tourney though, they'll almost certainly have to notch at least one win against the Zags. Our guard play will be significantly improved vs. last year--if we can maintain our defensive pressure and intensity, I just don't see them pulling one out. If they finish #2 in conference, they may sneak in as a bubble team at St. Mary's expense. Those are my way-too-early thoughts.

I'm officially worried about SDSU. Defense always travels well and Aztecs are a defensive stalwart under Fisher. They went undefeated in conference last season, lost in their conference tourney and went to NIT...all the way to semis in MSG. You can bet they realize how important a W at Gonzaga would be for their tourney resume. More experienced playing together than Zags will be in November....ripe for an upset. Zags better be ready

And Fish can stand right up and say, "We've beaten them there before, no reason to feel it's a huge upset, or undoable." Psyche on the way in matters even more early season imo.

I agree with you.

I agree, SDSU came in here and beat us...they had better athletes, they were much quicker and rebounded like there was no tomorrow! Leonard is an NBA All-Star and was the leader of that team...this team doesn't have that type of player.

SDSU is a solid program and they have played well over the past few years BUT the team they bring into GU is no where the same type of team! I am not saying they won't be able to beat us BUT GU has more talent than we had playing in the Pre-Season NIT home game...

I am not trying to be "cocky" but I feel extremely confident that this team will surprise many, many people this season!

It's also kind of depressing that the game we got to replace Cal, one that is supposed to be one of our quality OOC games, is "ranked" (to the extent those matter) at #44.

Couple that with BYU - another team we count on to give us some quality wins - so low, and it's too bad the schedule doesn't appear (yet) to have the strength they likely had hoped.

College Sports Madness has last year's Final Four Syracuse at #49. When's the last time a Syracuse team was ranked that poorly? This poll has a ton of flaws. BTW, the ACC coaches have the Orange #4 in probably the toughest conference in the nation.

I strongly disagree with their projected starting 5. I'll be SHOCKED if Markannen isn't a starter. One of Simmons or Alkins might be a starter, but I doubt both will. Ray Smith is another possibility and it's not completely out of the question that Jackson-Cartwright will get the nod at PG.

GU 13 v AZ 12. Big game for us regardless of rankings at the time. And if both teams come in undefeated, gangbusters!

After seeing part of their scrimmage on Pac 12 netword, I agree. Reminds me of Collins.

Wait, what?

We can't even get the tail number of the flight to our pre-game scrimmage b/c it's classified and the Pac 12 puts their scrimmages on TV?

Blue Ribbon is saying Markannen is 1st Team Pac 12.

Guess he's good.

It was their intrasquad scrimmage. At least the 2nd year in a row they've shown it on Pac 12 Network. I haven't heard anything about them have a super secret scrimmage against another team.

He's a different type of player (more finesse, less junkyard dog), but I'm thinking kinda similar to Sabonis as a Fr. at GU. The difference is there is no Karnowski or Wiltjer on the roster that would be keeping him out of the starting lineup.
