SAN MARCOS, Calif.—The postseason awards continued to roll in for Gonzaga baseball Wednesday as five Zags earned academic recognition from the West Coast Conference.

Three earned spots on the WCC All-Academic squad, tying co-champion Saint Mary’s for the most in the league. Brandon Bailey, Joey Harris, and Taylor Jones each picked up the honor, Harris doing so for the third season in a row while both Bailey and Jones were All-Academic Honorable Mention last season. A senior, Harris has posted a 3.60 GPA as a business administration major. He’s also been the team’s backstop in 39 of his 40 games played, posting a .267 batting average while throwing 15 runners out, picking off five and catching 10 stealing. He’s set career highs in every offensive category this season, scoring 24 runs and driving in 22 on 35 hits, including his first two career home runs. His .416 on base percentage is second-highest on the team thanks to 21 walks and 13 hit by pitches.

Bailey and Jones are earning their second academic award of the season after each earning a spot on CoSIDA’s Academic All-District squad in April. Bailey, a junior, has a 3.43 GPA as a sport management major. He’s been the Zags’ Friday night starter all year, going 8-3 with a 2.45 ERA. His 103 strikeouts this season are the seventh-highest in program history, and he’s also allowed two or fewer runs in nine of his 13 starts, nine of which were quality starts. His win total, ERA, and strikeouts all at least match career highs, and he’s currently seventh on Gonzaga’s all-time strikeouts list with 256. Jones, meanwhile, posted a 3.52 GPA and earned his degree in communication studies earlier this month. The slugger from Kent, Wash., leads the team with 68 hits, 22 of which are doubles. Those two-bagger numbers are tops in the conference and 12th in the nation. Jones has a .515 slugging percentage after also adding four triples – tying for the conference lead – and swatting two home runs. He’s driven in 32 RBIs and scored 34 runs himself.

Dustin Breshears and Sam Brown, meanwhile, earned All-Academic Honorable Mention accolades. Breshears, a redshirt senior, is working on a Master’s of Business Administration, posting a 3.51 GPA during his graduate studies. The North Bend, Wash., native has started all 50 games at shortstop for the Zags, tallying a .973 fielding percentage and throwing 144 batters out. Offensively, he too has posted career marks in most categories, collecting 51 hits, 30 runs, 20 RBIs, and four doubles. A redshirt junior, Brown has worked his way to a 3.56 GPA as a physical education major. The Zags’ leadoff hitter, Brown leads the team with 30 walks and has a .397 on base percentage, reaching base safely in each of the last 24 games (since April 5 versus Washington State). He’s scored 39 runs this year, second-most on the team, and is 8-for-10 in stealing bases. The Mill Creek, Wash., was named Academic Honorable Mention last season as well...
